macropus rufus

i have the most uncommon phobia.

rust stains on my bed

feel

sweeter,

sicker,

wicker.

weft and warp wicker like

the capillaries

squeezing my

muscle tissue

i wish you’d hold me like that,

baby.

sicker like

a seasick journey

to some arid land

like my hard palate

when my inhales try

to exhale

any memory of you,

dearest.

sweeter like

the bacteria feasting

on spots I forgot

dark craters on my skull

like you forgot,

how you fell for me,

darling-do.

didn’t you forget?

well,

my teeth- crooked uluru

my lungs- the great victoria desert

my veins- the megalong valley

they remember,

my love.

The Toolache Wallaby (Macropus greyi) lived in the swamps of SE Australia where the vegetation necessary for their diet grew. When European colonists drained the swamps for livestock the wallabies could not adapt to the loss of their ecosystem. The last Toolache Wallaby died in captivity in 1939.
