Classroom video conferencing for hybrid learning

I work at a University and oversee the management a number of rooms here. We've only recently moved in to these spaces they're setup for lecture capture into Panopto. Audio is all Dante, using Shure wireless mic's, and Crestron for control.

The system works well, however since install earlier last year the scope from our lectures has changed and they now want a solution to improve video calling when doing hybrid learning.

We looked at products like the OWL Labs camera but they're just not very good and are quite expensive, we know we need to use a proper VC setup but none of them seem really intended for educational spaces.

Obviously products like MXA910 are perfect for this and in testing work well in these rooms, however simply whatcking a microphone and camera in the room feels like it's going to give me a major headache with support every time they want to use it as they'll have to setup the microphone and speaker to use something like a Dante AVIO that grabs the network audio out of the 910.

Even if we were just using a USB mic as there are other array and beam forming mics that are USB audio devices, but the issue is the same. Maybe I am over thinking it but this feels like a place where I am going to get tech call outs all the time from people who can't get their Teams connected right.

MTR and Zoom Rooms feel like obvious solutions to this issue, giving us a ready to go appliance in the room which is configured for video calling. However looking at them neither really feels like it's well designed for a classroom environment where VC isn't the main purpose of the AV system, but rather one of several things the room AV must do including LC, and just straight up presenting in room.

As I see it, the existing Crestron panel in the room would be useless as it can't run two programmes and MTR isn't open to changing the UI, so I'd need to have another Crestron panel, or another brand like Logitech just to make it possible to occasionally make or receive a Teams call in the room.

It feels like theres no way to integrate the VC systems of today into an existing panel as a tab, or screen which you can jump into when you want to use that function, but otherwise ignore.

Is that correct, is there not a better way, have I missed something?

Does XMPP support video conferencing?

Hello, last year I was toying with the idea of creating a web app with both text chat rooms and video chat rooms. I gave up for various reasons but now I am itching again to proceed.

I don't know if all the features I need are supported in XMPP and my research doesn't lead to an answer. I would like to know if it is possible to set up video conferencing with XMPP? How this video conferencing happens? Every participant is connected to other participants via p2p? If yes, is this scalable? How can a person with a low bandwidth connection broadcast to many people simultaneously? Is it secure? Wouldn't p2p connections reveal the participants IP addresses?

I have heard that zoom uses ejabberd and the streams are combined in their servers and then broadcasted to the participants. Do I understand correctly?

I would like to also use ejabberd because I can use it with the elixir language which I am familiar. How can I do something similar to zoom for my application?

Any pointers or links or an ELI5 would help me a lot.

P.S.: Sorry if this posts seems like I didn't do my own research. I have been googling for days but my Google skills didn't get me very far with this one. Maybe because there are so many new things to understand.

A word of caution if you buy the $70 binax Covid with video conferencing from RCCL.

If the test comes back invalid, you are required to find and pay for you own test before you can board. All they will do is reimburse the cost of the test you bought from them. So make sure you leave time for this the day before cruising.

Conferencing in multiple callers

I get a lot of telemarketing/scam calls from people with Indian/Pakistani accents. Sometimes I engage with them for a little while. But if I get a second call while I am on the first call, then sometimes I will conference the two of them in together and see what happens.

I did this a couple of weeks ago. The first guy was pretending to be from my bank, and he was asking me for my credit card number. After I conferenced in the second guy he started playing with the first guy. Like the second guy told the first guy that if he was really from the bank, then he should know the credit card number. The first guy said that it begins with a 4. The second guy said that all Visa card numbers begin with a 4. Then the first guy said that it begins with 4400. The second guy said that was his old card, not his new card, etcetera. This went on, back and forth, for about 5 minutes. It was really funny. Finally after about 5 minutes of them arguing with each other in English they switched to Hindi/Punjabi. I let them talk for a little bit more, but at that point I couldn't tell what they were saying to each other, and that had me a little worried, so I hung up.

Apparently what they were saying to each other in Hindi/Punjabi was interesting enough to one of them that he called me back and asked me to put him in the conference again.

Title. Video meetings are distracting and unnecessary for meetings. Voice only meetings are the preferred method and allow you to focus more on what the person is saying rather than being visually distracted. Not to mention, less bandwidth is used.

Using Jami p2p video-conferencing, Win10, webcam framerate issue

Good day,

I am posting here as I cannot get an account to work on Framework's community page (can't get it confirmed).

I am trying to find a windows-based good video quality, privacy, security-oriented video chat app to use with the family and my framework laptop.

For that, I ended up installing Jami (https://jami.net/). Problem is, whenever I select the webcam & a resolution for the laptop, only two framerates are available for each resolution.

  • 1080p with 59fps or 5fps
  • 720p with 60fps or 8fps

Worse, when selecting the 59 or 60 fps, the webcam just doesn't work in the App. Looking at various troubleshooting posts on their issue tracker, it seems like the app only reads supported framerates coming from the drivers and the devs redirect users to contact the manufacturers for updates.

So what I am wondering;

  1. Has anyone managed to make Jami work on their framework laptop?
  2. Does anyone has better, working, alternatives to Jami? Can be paid, doesn't have to be free. (Signal requires a cell#, Wire has bad video quality, Whatsapp is terrible for privacy...)

Thank you!

Audio conferencing application with rails

I am a fan of completely monolithic apps (I mean using template engines instead of a well-known front-end framework, using the whole back-end system in a huge code base, etc.) for MVP's, idea demos and even small businesses. I know this is not the topic I'm speaking of, but I had to clarify this.

In recent months, I wanted to somehow reverse-engineer clubhouse and first, I found daily.co and their api. It's a great tool to make your own webinar, video conferencing or even voice chat apps. But their docs are less-than-perfect and apparently, they're not very well-known and there are almost no unofficial documents on their product.

Then, I was lucky to find jam.systems, and again, I faced same problems and even a new problem! although it is really good and user-friendly, it has no good mobile experience.

So, I was wondering, is it possible to make an audio conferencing app using rails? I mean entirely on rails and use everything that rails provides for handling the project.

I am a little bit tired of researching this, so I made this topic and I really appreciate your comments and advice!

Optimize for conferencing and gaming (sqm) on eero 6

~ +38-45ms on download and +0-9ms on download

When i enable sqm i sometime get better results ~ +20 on down and +0 on up, but other time i get much worse result +130 down and still +0 on up.. is there something i can do to make results more consistent with sqm enabled? or is this an eero limitation?

I cannot contact support as 2 of my eeros (including gateway) are vanilla from amazon, but other 2 are provided by isp so support pushes me to speak to isp..

Ordered $30 worth of mousepads and received $540 worth of video conferencing mounts instead

I ordered 3 replacement pads for my powerplay mousepad at $10 each and when my order arrived it was a HUGE box. Inside were no mousepads but instead I found 3 TV mounts for video conferencing devices (part number 952-000041) listed at $180 each. I'll admit, I was tempted to just pop them up on ebay and order more mousepads ;). However, I wanted to do the right thing and opened up a chat with support. After waiting almost an hour I gave up and closed the window. A day or so later I got an email that a support request had been opened and asking for details. So, I replied with pictures and explained what happened. After another day I got a reply saying that the issue had been sent to there investigation team and would take 7 to 14 days.Β I finally got another email this morning asking for pictures of the SKU/Part Number on the boxes despite the name being clearly visible in the pictures I already provided.Β I'm starting to regret not just putting them up on ebay and buying more mousepads at this point as it would have been faster and less hassle.Β I mean, why am I having to jump through a bunch of hoops to return their expensive mistake?!?!

I'm just glad I bought my KB+Mouse+Powerplay Mat from a retailer and not direct from Logitech. What if I had bought something expensive and was sent something cheap? Needless to say I won't be ordering anything else directly from Logitech... Figured I would share my story real quick and suggest people avoid ordering direct.

Help Needed with Logitech Rally Video Conferencing Set Up

Hi all,

As the title states, I am looking for some help with a Logitech Rally system in a commercial conference room space. This is my first conference room and I cant help but feel overwhelmed with the software associated with the system. Any help at all would be appreciated!

Due to the supply chain issues we're all experiencing, I was forced to piecemeal the Logitech Rally hardware from a few different vendors. The Logitech hardware came together and functions as it should, although it didn't come with the NUC (with MTR preloaded) so that was left up to me to purchase separately. I bought the computer (Dell Optiplex 7080 mini) from a third party vendor as new in box. This computer didn't come with the Microsoft Teams Room software imaged to the device so that is what's holding me up. I upgraded from Windows 10 Pro to Enterprise, although the only way the IT manager of the corporation was able to give me a license was through a single bought license with a key (I later read on a Microsoft forum that the only acceptable license is through a volume license) so I believe that will cause an issue too. I followed all tutorials available and I'm not able to get anything loaded or imaged on the PC. There's not much help available through Logitech or Microsoft support so I was wondering what you think the best option would be.

Should I keep searching for a NUC with MTR already imaged on the PC? This is way over my head & the head of IT did all he can to help already. What would you do in my situation?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance.
