Is the current Covid Inquest in Victoria a true example of a Inquisitorial system?

Just wondering, and the name probably answers my question for me. Is the Victorian Inquest about covid they are having a "text book" example of an Inquisitorial system?

I know Coronial Inquests are "Inquisitorial in nature" but with the police investigating on behalf of the Coroner it seems its a bit of a blend.

Who does the leg work for the investigation for the current Inquest? I imagine it is mostly by subpoenaed documents but each witness would provide a statement before hand so who would take that?

ELI5: Differences between inquisitorial and common law justice systems

I've been trying to understand based on the Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisitorial_system article but it doesn't help a lot. The big difference seemed to be a judge being involved in the investigation of a case, collecting evidence, whereas in the common law system, that is only the job of police and judges are there only for trials. But since the judge that is investigating is a separate type of judge to one that adjudicates, and is not allowed to sit in on the trial of the accused it seems like one could replace the word 'judge' with 'detective' and the differences between the two systems would be gone. I'm evidently missing something.

Many nations in the world use an inquisitorial model for criminal trials - France being a notable example, and Northern Ireland during the Troubles era. I'm interested in whether or not this leads to heightened conviction rates, or if anyone has done a comparative study on whether this leads to increased/decreased levels of wrongful conviction.

Thanks.

[Various Sources] Weird Xenos, Drukhari's version of Space Marines or Laer Survivors? Who are Sslyth?

There was this little comment under one of my previous posts:

>I'd love to read a Sslyth post!
>
>/u/DeathByZen

So fuck, I guess we are doing it. And this post will be all about Sslyth - who are they, their role in Drukhari society and some theories about their origins.

So, those are Sslyth - the auxillary race of the Dark Eldar who are most well-known for being a great bodyguards. They may look like a giant, four-armed snakes but in Commorragh they are among the most trusted guardians.

So, now that I've mentioned their apperance, let's start with in-depth discussion.

THE GENERAL APPEARANCE

>The Sslyth are a sentient race of reptilian creatures with a snake-like lower body and vaguely humanoid torso, though they sport multiple arms and a head more serpentine than human. This xenos has two pairs of strong arms which work independently of one another, meaning a Sslyth has a great deal of dexterity and can even use multiple weapons at the same time.
>
>Sslyth are hairless and covered with thick, iridescent scales, and while the head is vaguely human there are no visible signs of ears outside of a small hole on each side of the Sslyth’s head. The creature has large, wide-set eyes and instead of a nose, it has a pair of nasal pits. The Sslyth’s lipless mouth holds a set of huge fangs that protrude from the upper jaw, along with a host of smaller sharpened teeth.
>
>**A thin forked tongue flickers from its mouth, constantly tasting the air for prey. The senses of the Sslyth are overall quite advanced, displaying a far better

[Theory] Using Maths to Estimate the Size of the Imperium

It has long been a personal question of mine as to how big the imperium actually is. Now, the full extent of the God-Emperor's dominion is unknown even to the high lords, so I'm hardly attempting exact numbers. A great deal of this is going to be based on assumptions that the way humans work fundamentally doesn't change even in thirty-eight thousand years, and so certain patterns of behavior can be expected to replicate.

Firstly, the actual size of the Imperium. The Imperium of Man is in control of, roughly speaking, most of the milky way galaxy. This galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years in diameter, and to simplify the math, we will assume it is roughly cubic. The Imperium is divided into sectors, which are on average a 200 cubic light year cube, meaning the imperium contains 50,000 sectors. Each sector is divided into subsectors, which have a "ten light year radius", to save on the trouble of fitting spheres into a cube, we shall translate this to a 20 cubic light year area, which means there are 10 subsectors per sector. Each subsector contains "2 to 8 planetary systems" so on average, 5 planetary systems per subsector.

This means that the Imperium would contain, on average, 50 planets per sector, and therefore 500,000 planets. However, lore states that the imperium contains at least a million worlds, so we must assume that each planetary system has on average 2 inhabited worlds, for a total of 1,000,000 planets. This makes sense given the Imperium's ability to plop down settlements in places where human life really isn't plausible.

Now then, as to the population of these planets, this is where things become complicated. Because the population of imperial planets vary wildly. On one end, you've got hive worlds with tens of billions living in a single city. And on the other, you have agri-worlds with comparatively nobody living on them, mining colonies occupied almost entirely by servitors and a few overseers, feudal worlds (which assuming earthlike conditions and a comparable level of development to the year one thousand have less than a billion), and death worlds, where humanity is on the near-brink of extinction at all times and exists pretty much only to produce either Astartes or demi-astartes like the Catachans.

So, lacking any data on the proportions of this, I refer to modern patterns of human habitation. For an example, the American state of California. Despite being one of the largest states by geographic area, most of California

[Excerpts: Gate of Bones & Codex: Adeptus Custodes]Gate of Bones shows why an incident depicted in the Custodes codex is peak grimderp

This is from the codex:

>A controversial act of insubordination sees Lieutenant Nathasian of the Cadian 86th slated for execution. Yet he is spared when a band of grim-faced Custodians from the Aquilan Shield appear at his side in a blaze of golden light, and wordlessly cut down his would-be commissariat executioners. With his remarkable bodyguards at his side, Nathasian is free to exercise his flair for unconventional tactics, which soon sees his promotion to Commander Army Group, then to Warmaster of an entire Imperial crusade. The Shuddering Stars are swept clear of Ork tribes, stopping Waaagh! Dakskrag in its tracks before it can descend upon the Sol System. In the wake of Nathasian’s triumph over the greenskins, his bodyguards depart as suddenly as they had arrived and – never ones to rescind a sentence – the commissariat see Warmaster Nathasian dead before the day is out.

Who, you ask, are the Aquilan Shield?

>The Aquilan Shield are an informal brotherhood laced through the ranks of the Adeptus Custodes. They typically operate in small warrior bands, journeying across the stars to stand watch over their charges wherever they may be. No warning is given nor permission asked – the warriors of the Aquilan Shield appear as if from nowhere, avatars of the Emperor's will who announce their quarry to be under the protection of the Master of Mankind.

Well Gate of Bones shows in great detail why the commissariat killing Nathasian in the end is idiotic beyond words.

When the Custodes arrive on Gathalamor their teleportation misses its mark by some kilometres, landing them right next to a bunch of Possessed Marines who are about to snack down on a young woman who, to her shock, finds out that just occasionally the Emperor does protect.

>*A fanged maw approached her face. It seemed that the helm opened, but it was at the same time part of the face, a mix of armour and man. A long, thick tongue slipped out. Shanni closed her eyes and prepared to die. A bolt of golden lightning arced up from the ground and sent one of the monstrous figures reeling. A piercing whine filled the air. The golden light of dawn was outshone by a coruscating vortex that caught up stone and shards of stained glass and spun them round. The things that had been hunting her were driven back, howling words she didn’t understand. Shanni was dropped like a sack of bones. She was numb with fear, and could not move, but her heart soared. After everything, the Emperor had answe

How to come up with the criminal procedure for your conculture's legal system?

In addition to coming up with the process that makes the laws, I think designing a legal system for a conculture has to involve coming up with the procedure for criminal arraignment and prosecution. However, I'm having a hard time thinking out of box, coming up with a creative way to construct that procedure that isn't just a rip off American criminal procedure.

In a sense, I can think of a number of different variables I can tweak, but not very many possible values for them, e.g.

  • Adversarial vs. inquisitorial system

  • Guilt determined by trial by combat vs. trial by ordeal vs. trial by the trier of fact

  • Jury vs. judge as the trier of fact

  • Separate civil ("prosecution" by the plaintiff) vs. criminal (prosecution by the state) vs. maybe ecclesiastical courts (prosecution by a religious institution)

  • Presumption of innocence vs. presumption of guilt

  • Standard of evidence required for conviction: somewhere between preponderance of the evidence vs. beyond a reasonable doubt

  • Somewhere on the spectrum between strict, textualist adherence to the letter of the codified law vs. the trier of fact essentially getting to assess guilt on whatever basis, and answered by whatever random punishment they see fit

  • Legal positivism vs. natural law

etc.

Note that:

  1. I am not interested in ideas for specific punishments. In past threads I've read about legal systems people tend to focus on "hey check out how quirky and thought-provoking my punishments are haha". I don't care. I can come up with punishments all day too, but that's not what I'm asking. What I want to know are some alternative processes to assess whether the punishment is deserved or not in the first place.

  2. I am not trying to create the perfect legal system. Everyone and their dog has their own idea of what the perfect legal system is because "perfect" is subjective. In practice, I think previous threads on making up a legal system have degenerated into people taking their political frustrations out on something, and simply assume that quite modern schools of thought about what counts as "justice" are just simply obvious and intuitive to come up with and self-evidently just... even when most of human history would disagree with them.

I certainly have my own ideas of what a good legal system would include, but I was steeped in an entirely different tradition and culture than my conpeople. Rather than what I would find perfect, I want to figure out what *th

[Excerpts: Various] The Order of the Argent Shroud: Silent Hit-and-Run Sisters (and enemy of the Flesh Tearers)

The Sisters of the Argent Shroud don’t get a lot of screen time up until the most recent novel of Gate of Bone. I’ve not read it so I cannot say how deeply it goes into their presence. However, the Argent Shroud are interesting in the fact they’re a fast striking group of Order Militant. Additionally, they had some interesting stories in the old Warzone Armaggeddon campaign.

Overview (Codex: Adepta Sororitas 8th edition) >Like a silver bolt, the Sisters of the Argent Shroud strike at the Emperor’s enemies. They are renowned for their speed in combat, and are often first into the fray, where their faith in their protector saint shines bright.

>The Order of the Argent Shroud teaches that deeds have more power than words when it comes to purifying the spirit and purging the taint of corruption from the Imperium…

>Without fear or doubt, the Sisters of the Argent Shroud throw themselves into the deadliest conflicts, marching boldly against overwhelming enemy numbers and into hellish battlefield conditions. They avoid formulating grand stratagems and rarely communicate intended tactics to their allies, to the ire of many Imperial generals. Simply put, the Order places its trust in the divine guidance of the Emperor more than in the carefully orchestrated plans of his fallible servants. The results achieved by the Argent Shroud soon put paid to any misgivings. Spearheads of silver-clad warriors race towards teeming xenos throngs, and invasion cathedrums hurtle onto worlds writhing with Chaos energy. With swift surges the Sororitas smash through the defensive formations of far larger armies, destroying monstrous artillery batteries stationed behind the front lines, and permanently silencing the demagoguery of heretical enemy commanders. Lightning-fast assaults are followed by rapid withdrawals, and as the foe reels in confusion, the Sisters of the Argent Shroud reform and strike again.

Saint Silvana’s Fate (Codex: Adepta Sororitas 8th edition)

>The Matriarch of the Argent Shroud is Silvana, first martyred and most mysterious of Dominica’s bodyguard. Her service as head of the Order was brief. Shortly after Alicia Dominica had founded the Order of the Ebon Chalice, the remaining Sisters of the Convent Prioris were placed under Silvana’s command – but Silvana was struck down before launching a single War of Faith. The most reliable records concur that she was poisoned by a Death Cult Assassin, although these accounts vary wildly in their s

Wanted to do an in-depth dive at the weapons of the Adepta Sororitas. While mostly focusing on the Ordes Militant (for obvious reasons), I did include what little I could find on the other orders as well. Warning: it's long.

β€˜Blessed are the boltgun, the flamer and the melta, for they are the holy trinity of firearms as ordained by the almighty Emperor of Mankind, and they are the tools by which we shall destroy His foes.’

  • Sister Furenza Palos (Codex: Adepta Sororitas 8th Edition, p. 96)

MELEE

Chainsword

>Despite their brutal appearance and distinctive rasping roar, Chainswords β€” sometimes referred to as β€˜Chainblades’ β€” require training to be most effective. A duel between two trained Chainsword wielders is a sight to behold, as they alter the speed and direction of the spinning teeth to counter, parry, and ultimately overcome their opponent with savage grace. - Wrath and Glory p. 214

>Slinging the bolter, she [Sister Superior Augusta] drew the chainsword and started the mechanism. It snarled into life like pure impatience, eager for the blasphemers’ blood. - Mercy by Danie Ware

However, it appears only Sister Superiors and higher ranks have chainswords

>There were only the three of them [Melia, Caia, and Akemi] – no heavy bolter, no flamer, no chainsword. - The Bloodied Rose by Danie Ware, Ch. 9

And maybe some specialists.

>[Sister Hospitaller] Lucia reloaded, slamming the second of her four sickle-clips into the breach, and put another series of rounds into the creature as it turned towards her. She dimly saw the enforcer flank to her left as it charged. Drawing her chainsword in one swift action, she thumbed the activation stud, revving it to life, though she knew it would be too late. - Flesh Tithe by Miles A. Drake

Punch dagger

The Order of the Bloody Rose conceals a punch dagger in the fleur-de-lys symbol on the front of their breastplate.

>Slowly, holding the fear at bay, Augusta came to her feet. She drew the hidden punch-dagger from the fleur-de-lys on the front of her armour… - Forsaken by Danie Ware

>Instantly, reflexively, Augusta went for her bolter, but her gauntlet came back empty. Her heart pounding, she was on her feet, turning, drawing the small fleur-de-lys punch-dagger from the front of her armour... They broke into a run, their metal feet clanging a challenge. (Warning: Morbid dad joke) True Story -- My family were planning my mum's funeral. We always try to keep things light and try to stay positive, just as Mum would have it...

The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.

Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.

The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:

"What's sarong with that?"

I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).

His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.

[F] The Council of Antaras Part 1- The Meeting Between the Aegis Shield Knights and the Steel Falcons

Hello! it is my first post here and I am honored, excited, and nervous. For more than a year a friend of mine and I have been creating a series of Campaigns in a System of our Creation - the Dalleon System. In an effort to save this beleaguered System, two small groups of Astartes from the Steel Falcons, and the Aegis Shield Knights, have been dispatched. But far away, in the empty system of Antaras, the Chapter Master of the Aegis Knights and the Chapter Master of the Steel Falcons, are about to meet. The relations between these chapters is odd to say the least, and they are about to get even stranger.

For a long time i was not at all interested in Warhammer, but i have steadily grown to love the lore and develop an appreciation for its utter uniqueness. This is my first EVER piece of fanfiction, and I pray to the Emperor that you enjoy. Please forgive the errors I am sure you will find, I am not a natural edittor, though i have tried my best here.

The Council of Antaras

003.M42

Segmentum Pacificus, Uhulis Sector, Eupherite SubSector, Antaras System,

The Antaras system was, like so many others in the galaxy, largely unremarkable. A single yellow star hung in the void, with only a handful of barren planets of rock and dust held in its orbit. A mining platform, a relic of some long forgotten dream of wealth, floated in ruin amongst a small cluster of asteroids. On the outskirts of the system, in orbit around a world covered in barren rock planes and fields of frozen carbon dioxide, was the Ardens Fortuna, battle barge of the Aegis Shield Knights.

From her private observation deck on the Ardens Fortuna, Ashebrae Clypeus found the view of the stars was a cold yet beautiful sight. She stood as close to the vast glass window as she could, her robes discarded a few paces behind her. The rest of the room lights were set to their dimmest possible mode so as to make it easier to see every single star, and allow their pale light to touch her smooth, ivory skin. An auto-flute, hidden somewhere in the shadows, played a slow, sad song that echoed around the cavernous space.

As humans had learned so many millennia ago, there was something very different about observing the stars from deep space, rather than gazing up at them from the surface of a planet. It wasn’t simply that there were more stars, though that was certainly the case, it was that the stars seemed to stare back at you.

With a wave of her hand, Ashebrae disengaged the observation deck’

Summary of Warzone Characdon (Act 1: The Book of Rust)

The Introduction:

-The Book starts with Abaddon speaking to a Lord Discordant called Akhorath Zied. He tells him that the fire (Great Rift) that he started is spreading further. Half of the galaxy is in darkness, and its worlds and armies are burning to ash. It is not enough. Still, the Imperials continue to defy him. Still, the Chaos Gods continue to whisper their false promises. Still, there are those who believe him to be a weak fool like Horus before him. Let them talk; when the fire comes for them, nothing will be left but their screams. There is work yet to be done.

-Abaddon orders Lord Zied to find Typhus and command him his name to gather a mighty force and use it to plunge the Charadon sector into anarchy. It's another step in Abaddon's plan to stoke the fire consuming the galaxy.

-After finding Typhus, Lord Zied spoke with the Warmaster's voice. He ordered Typhus to quit his own crusade and gather a mighty army to wield in Abaddon's name. Normally, Typhus would have slain the Lord Discordant for daring to command him. But these were the Warmaster's command, so he bent the knee.

-For millennia, Typhus acknowledged no master but himself. He has been set on his own quest to bring ruin to the Imperium that he hates utterly, honor his deity, and follow his ambitions. Not even the command of his genefather holds any sway on Typhus. However, when Abaddon commands, Typhus obeys. No one truly knows the reason behind this. Some believe that Typhus greatly admires Abaddon's defiance of the gods and his rejection of daemonhood, for they show that Abaddon possesses a purity of purpose that far exceeds that of Typhus' own. Others belives that Typhus yearns to give his loyalty to a new Warmaster that isn't a failure like Horus was. The most cynical whisper that this is yet another play by the Chaos Gods to woo Abaddon. By using Typhus to show Abaddon the strength of the Plague God's followers, Nurgle is trying to tempt the Warmaster to his singular worship. Whatever the case may be, Typhus follows and obeys Abaddon without question.

-Using his reputation and Abaddon's authority, Typhus gathered a mighty armada of heretics and monsters. It was a loose coalition that featured various renegade and traitor warbands; most notable of them is a mysterious warband called the Disciples formed from an alliance of Word Bearers and Alpha Legionnaires. More than twelve Chaos Knight houses pledged their fell lances to Typhus' banner. Some of them mar
