A list of puns related to "City Of God"
Hi everyone. First post in this sub, though I've lurked for a while.
I don't know if there's a punchier name for this trope, but: can anyone recommend any stories with settings where races have established settlements on the bodies of gods, monsters and ultra-megafauna? Bonus points if whatever it was has been incorporated into the architecture and economy of the settlers.
Doesn't have to be particularly macabre. The only example that's coming to mind right now is Terry Pratchett's The Fifth Elephant but I am certain there must be others. For some reason the concept of a dead dragon becoming a chain of islands sounds terribly familiar, but I can't recall where I've seen it before.
This is to satisfy my curiosity, more than anything, though I'm always on the hunt for new reading material :)
Inspired due to the heat in Aus and Cold in America.

I just watched this movie for the first time since I was a teenager, everything about it is beautiful. The cinematography, the acting, the character development. It's a must watch for anyone who appreciates great movies and can read well enough to follow subtitles. It has an element of realism that really helps you understand what the characters experienced.
La Haine and City of God, although very different films, both provide a portrayal of the lower class suburbs of two large cities. I find that the strong socio-political themes present in both films as well as the cinematic approach to portraying them can be linked to the social realist movement but I'm unsure if this is correct. I hope that a discussion around this topic could help me understand how I could create a comparative study around these two films.
I've been looking for a copy of Dietrich Con Hildebrand's book 'Trojan Horse in the City of God' for the better part of a year.
It is out of print AFAIK, and the only used copies I could find online were $400+. The wait list for a digital copy was super long too. No bookstores had it, and the Catholic libraries and schools I looked into had never heard of it (surprise...). Anyways, the recent Marshall podcast about Nouvelle Theologie prompted me to look again.
I found copies at two local Protestant theology schools! And the adjacent shelves were full of Garrigou-Lagrange, Ralph McInerny, and had an excellent selection of old brevaries and offices. I even got a free library card to borrow the books!
So it turns out the Protestant libraries are more willing to carry actual Catholicism than Catholic sources around here...
Hey All!
I'm just about to start in on another round of edits after getting feedback from some more beta readers, but was hoping to work on my query through this process to have it ready to go/see if any issues point to larger problems with the book. I've posted before and made some significant changes since then.
Would love (well first hate, but then love after I get over myself) any feedback you could provide!
Thank you :)
PS should I keep the bio? It's not directly related to writing, but my thought was it pointed my experience with the subject matter/crafting narrative. I flip flop on keeping v. cutting.
Dear [Ms/Mr NAME],
DROWNING CITY & THE FAMILY OF GOD is [PERSONALIZED based on agent--ex: at once a detective thriller, a tale of personal growth, and a love letter to the sea]. It is complete at 120,000 words with the potential to become a series.
Tessa Trevisani just found her sugar daddy dead on his penthouse floor. Grant Holdenβs family is big time and Tessa knows sheβll be blamed. With no papers, no connections, and a euphorazine habit she cannot seem to kick, she will spend the rest of her life on a prison plantation if sheβs caught.
Tessa flees along the toxic canals of the drowning city, seeking refuge on the beautiful and remote island commune where she was raised. La Famiglia de Dio welcomes her back into the fold, but she must atone for ten years of hard living. As she detoxes her way back to a normal life, Tessa uncovers a dark secret: the Family of God is not what it seems to be. Tessa can confront the ugly truth and lose the only family sheβs ever had, or she can keep denying it and risk losing everything else.
I've spent my career producing documentaries for HBO. I've reported on the human impact of the opioid epidemic, sex work, slumlords, and mass incarceration (among others). Though I never joined any cult other than SoulCycle, I have studied them extensively and interviewed members of the infamous Source Family as research.
Please find [whatever agent wants] appended [wherever agent wants]. If you think this novel could be a fit for you, Iβd be honored to send the full manuscript.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
[me]
I've had two different apprenticeship job interviews in the past week I've had to turn down due to the actual location being in Polk county and Marion county while the ad I responded to said Orlando.
Edit: totally forgot to add my location to the title, which can't be edited. [USA-NY]

Dear Ms. AGENT,
This summer, AGENT'S PROFESSIONAL FRIEND read a sample of DROWNING CITY & THE FAMILY OF GOD and, citing your interest in speculative fiction told from diverse perspectives, recommended I approach you directly. The novel is now complete at 100,000 words, with the potential to become a series.
Tessa Trevisani is a euphorazine junkie who just found her Sugar Daddy dead on his penthouse floor. His family is big time and, unless Tessa wants to spend the rest of her life working the UV fields on a prison plantation, she needs to get out of town and fast.
Tessa flees through the toxic canals of the drowning city and across the island of the dead, seeking refuge with the cult that raised her. On the Famiglia di Dio compound, Tessa is welcomed back into the fold, but there are those who would do anything to keep her silent about the real reason she left all those years ago.
In dealing with themes of corruption and power DROWNING CITY & THE FAMILY OF GOD is similar to THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson. In its embrace of humanity at the end of civilization, itβs similar to STATION ELEVEN by Emily St. John Mandel, and in its exploration of strong, flawed characters and complicated family dynamics, SHARP OBJECTS by Gillian Flynn.
I received a BA in English Lit & Creative Writing from COLLEGE and have spent the past six years producing documentaries for HBO. Iβve reported on everything from the opioid epidemic to slumlords to mass incarceration. Though Iβve never joined a cult myself (unless you count SoulCycle), Iβve researched exhaustively, including interviewing members of the infamous Source Family.
Iβve attached the first ten pages to this email. If you think my novel about resolving a past that isnβt finished playing out yet might be a fit for you, Iβd be honored to forward you the full manuscript.
Thank you, truly, for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
MY NAME
