A list of puns related to "Sailing ballast"
So I have this wild idea for another boat building project. After building a couple river dories and a SUP, I have decided to build my first sailboat. Planning and designing a strip- built 22" cuddy-cruiser weekend trailer sailer has been fun and I am building the keel and ribs this week. It's somewhere between the CLC faering, Ougthred's Caledonia Yawl, and the Clipper Voyager canoe, it should be space for 2 of us and dogs, camping gear etc.
My wife and I have done some real expeditioning and this boat might seem downright luxurious compared to some of our adventures. I am including about 350lbs of water ballast, partly to combine a weeks worth of drinking water with plenty of weight to spare. I also see the advantage of drainable ballast for trailering a longer distance.
SO HERE IS THE QUESTION- is there a stronger righting moment or higher angle of vanishing stability by having the water ballast in a single low 20"-wide tank centerline, or is there an advantage to splitting the water weight and having 2 tanks far out to the turn of the bilge about 30 inches from midline?
The CLC faering has a small centerline tank which keeps the water down low. when I was poking around design forums and cruiser forums, I came across the the idea of splitting the water tanks. A couple advantages were mentioned including weight being further away from axis is a stronger leverage arm on the righting force. The second advantage that was mentioned makes less sense but may still apply: when the boat is heeled, the low-side water is under the actual water level and is effectively neutrally buoyant while the high-side is lifted above the water level. The only disadvantages can see is moving the weight laterally does raise the ballast height about 4 inches above the single centered tank.
Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? I have quite a bit of Time to decide, and minor reconfigurations of storage compartments, drain holes, and hatches don't change the CE, CLR, dimensions or running rigging setup I have in mind.
Thanks!

The captain didn't report it to VI authorities until nearly 2 months later.
Over the next several days, Kerwyn fell into a rhythm. While the cabin he chose prevented him from being much of an early riser, he would awaken and find a task on which to focus. He found himself having a preference for the more physical aspects of keeping a ship sailing, from helping adjust the sails to shifting cargo and ballast to rectify any balance issues that arose from the shipโs movement.
โI feel like Iโve really accomplished something when itโs done,โ Kerwyn had explained to Mallory when asked his reasons for choosing those particular tasks. โLike Iโve earned my sleep, you know?โ Mallory teased him about smelling like he had earned that sleep, but was otherwise understanding.
The coastline was never fully out of sight, and the changes in the terrain helped Kerwyn place where they were on their journey. There were fewer visible trees as they moved north, and the ones that remained had fewer leaves. As the view became more rocks than trees, Kerwyn knew they were getting close to the end of their route.
It was Danillion who came to Kerwyn on the last day, although it seemed like he might have drawn the short straw. โGive yourself a day off of helping the crew, so that you can recover,โ he insisted. โWeโre likely to be on a long land journey, and youโll be grateful you took a day off beforehand.โ
โYouโre right, of course,โ Kerwyn agreed, eventually sequestering himself in his cramped quarters for some well-needed sleep.
It was well into the afternoon the next day when the ship tacked westward. Kerwyn packed the last of his possessions and headed above deck, eager to see the docks approaching.
Whatever he expected to see approaching, Kerwyn was ill-prepared for the sight that greeted him. The harbor town itself looked much like any other, though the buildings crowding the shore seemed in some disrepair. That was not what drew Kerwynโs eyes, though. What looked no more than an hourโs ride north of the docks, the coloration of the land changed dramatically. While the Uskosi coast ahead of them was fairly sparse, that to the north was grey and barren. Kerwynโs eyes could not make out much specific detail, but it seemed that the winds carried a river of dust off the cliffside and into the ocean.
Kerwyn climbed to the quarterdeck, his eyes still on the approaching shore. Stavros met him as the stairway, glancing back at his helmsman briefly.
โWelcome to Borduvide,โ the captain said, pointing to the west. โThe glistening jewel of n

It's a case that involves one of the most influential figures in Greek politics and sports, and for the most part has been swept under the rug, as key witnesses keep dropping like flies.
I will mainly transcribe a thorough article about the case, written by Alexander Clapp for "The News Republic" in September 2020, of which I will link in the bottom. I will also provide pictures and follow up information after the article was written.
"On April 28, 2014, a fishing trawler intercepted an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, a day after the tanker had left Dubai for Greece. Three men climbed aboard the tanker and spent the night packing hundreds of small sacks of heroin, weighing at least two metric tons in total, into its ballast boxes. After they finished, two of the men sailed back to the coast. One stayed behind. He carried a handgun and ordered the tankerโs crew to keep sailing.
By late May, the tanker, which was called the Noor One, had passed through the Suez Canal. Early on the morning of June 6, it nosed into Elefsina, a grimy port just west of Athens. The next afternoon, four Kurdish men in a black Mercedes SUV pulled up in front of the ship, hauled the sacks of heroin out of the Noor Oneโs ballasts, and began transporting them toward Athens.
The Kurds had spent years preparing for the heroinโs arrival. They had negotiated to pay more than $20 million for the Plaza Resort on the Attic Riviera, planning to use the tourist destination as a money-laundering site for proceeds from its sale. They had leased a warehouse and an industrial chicken coop in the olive groves near Athens International Airport; here, the Noor Oneโs heroin would be diluted with more than five tons of marble dust from a quarry on nearby Mount Pentelikon. To transport the shipment, they had purchased a forklift and several hundred canvas bags stamped โPakistan White Sugar.โ In early May, an associate from Belgium had arrived in a cargo truck outfitted with secret compartments. The truck was supposed to move most of the heroin to a port in northwest Greece, then across the Adriatic by ferry to Italy. From there, it would be distributed to the street corners of Belgium and the Netherlands, kicking back hundreds of millions of euros to its owners.

At first blush, that makes it seem hugely important in the realm of military technology alone.
From wikipedia:
>The evasive capabilities highly prized by merchantmen also made Bermuda sloops the ship of choice for the pirates themselves, earlier in the 18th century, as well as for smugglers. They often carried sufficient crew out to return with several prizes, and these extra crew were useful both as movable ballast, and in handling the labor-intensive sloops. The shape of the ship enabled Bermudian mariners to excel. The same abilities allowed Bermuda sloops to escape from better-armed privateers and even larger Man-of-war British naval ships which, with their square rigs, could not sail as closely to windward. The ability of the sloop rig in general to sail upwind meant a Bermuda sloop could outrun most other sailing ships by simply turning upwind and leaving its pursuers floundering in its wake

Project Jet 14
The Jet 14 one-design is a high performance, one to two-person small class especially designed for optimal sailing in a variety of wind conditions. It's simple rigging, planing capability, stability, and class comaraderie continue to engender class growth. Over 1150 Jet 14's have been built to date, many still sailing in regattas spread across the northeast, mid-Atlantic, and midwestern states.
All the hardware is here. The mast is in great shape. But the boat needs the transom to be rebuilt. I have all the plans for it and all hardware.
I have two full sets of sails. This Jet 14 is #461. I have the matching sails in addition to an extra set of sails in great condition. It also has a full canvas (military color) cover and full all around air bag ballast.
The trailer was in great shape when it was parked a few years ago. Bearings were put on and it barely went anywhere. No title or reg for it though.
There is a great history to these boats and this could be a great one again. I have the original certificate and a book about Jet 14. This was the commodores boat for a sailing club in Sacandaga, NY.
โThat ability is not a toy, Kerwyn,โ Mallory admonished when he finally awoke. Captain Stavros had decided to wait one more day to set sail, in case a cleric was needed to deal with things. He had also demanded that Kerwynโs care take place in the masterโs cabin, not below deck.
Once he had his head about him, Kerwyn had owned up to his newfound ability to step into the In-Between at will, how it had manifested during the fight in Dawnkeep. Any mention of Valo or Redeemers or any of that was left unspoken, every bit as firmly as the fact that he had let Aidan live. Malloryโs initial shock gave way to a lecture, one of which they were presently on their third lap.
โI am aware it was foolish of me,โ Kerwyn admitted. โItโs obvious, in hindsight. I didnโt think that it was something any of you could teach me.โ
โI know my way around magic of all sorts,โ Mallory replied defensively. โDanillion knows the fae roads as well as any other. Between the two of us we could have given you at least a bit of understanding what you were facing.โ
โIt doesnโt have this kind of effect on Danillion when he steps through,โ Kerwyn objected. โOr on us when he brought us with him. Iโm not going to lie to you and claim that it seemed harmless, but...it certainly didnโt seem that risky.โ
Mallory let out an exasperated sigh. โKerwyn, dabbling in magic you do not understand is always risky. In this particular instance, let me start with the mistake at the core of your logic. โThe In-Betweenโ is not synonymous with โfae roads.โ For starters, did you see any roads while you were there?โ
โI did not.โ
โPrecisely,โ Mallory said with a slight smile. โWhile the fae roads are in the In-Between, they are a carefully curated series of paths crafted by years of protective magic to shield travelers. Itโs why one needs to stick to prescribed routes. Risk wise, itโs the difference between taking the Queenโs highway and marching through the deepest wilderness. While the direct path in the In-Between might be faster, it comes at the expense of doing damage to your soul.โ
โThat doesnโt sound pleasant,โ Kerwyn responded. โI wouldnโt have believed that souls were real, but that is a quite accurate description of how it felt. Like I...wasnโt attached to anything anymore. It started with thinking that the three of you had abandoned me.โ
โSouls are very much real, but they are not equipped for being dragged back and forth across dimensions. Do it once or twice without con

TL;DR: After 8+ years of zealous Christian faith, I have finally decided to jump ship and hopefully not drown in the process. Below is my story of how and why Iโve left, some of my current views on religion, and a poem I wrote recently encapsulating some of these thoughts and feelings.
Hey, everyone ๐ Boy, itโs been a ride, but I (M24) think Iโm finally ready to talk about this openly and transparently for the first time. For all my ex-evangelical brothers and sisters, consider this my anti-testimony (I googled โtestimonyโ antonyms and the first response said โrebuttalโ. I kind of like the ring of that. Maybe we should officially coin it. So here it goes: my own lifeโs rebuttal to the Christian faith).
For some background, Iโd say my family was pretty religious. We were part of a very conservative, cult-like denomination that fell on the evangelical side of things. If you know anything about dispensationalism, rapture theology, 7 year tribulation/millennial kingdom type theology then you know what Iโm talking about. Our churches also did head coverings for women type of stuff. Yeah - yikes exactly ๐ฌ When I was young we attended church 3-4 times per week and there was absolutely no getting out of it.
In my teens/early adolescence, my parents were basically excommunicated from all church affiliation so we started branching out more, church hopping a lot, trying to form new friendships and connections. At times it was hard, but we moved a lot as a family too (as in to entirely different states for various reasons) so we learned to adjust to whatever came our way.
My own experiences with genuine Christian faith started at around 15/16 when in what seemed like an instant I went from a rebellious, hormonal, angry teenager to wanting to take my faith very seriously. It happened mainly through a conversation I had at the time with a pastor who truly cared about my well-being in a way I had never experienced before. I still have fond memories of that hour we spent talking together.
According to those around me, I had finally stopped resisting the Holy Spiritโs work in my life. My โheart of stoneโ had become a โheart of fleshโ. And for years I believed that too. But I always had a lingering doubt in my mind: how do I know this is true? Is this experience veritable and if so how can I find out?
So I turned to every young evangelicalโs favorite topic: Christian apologetics. Believe me when I say Iโve read and studied just about every apologist under the su

Now I am stuck fighting an unending onslaught on DDs with the occasional CL or sub. This is my 3rd campaign and I am playing as the IJN so the USN has a vast stockpile of ships to pull from but that just makes the mid game drag on as it takes so long to get more engineering/fuel into Guadalcanal.
Here is the main culprits of the US loses:
They rarely retreat, and when they do its too late. Subs have a field day with fleets sailing in straight lines and can rengage a fleet multiple time until its gone.
Unlimited air from bases is just broken, sending in those poor zeros from Guadalcanal just before the carrier strike force attacks can pull most the AA off them for minimal loses. (Pro tip slow your attack speed on your fighters to 100knt and they will do 3-4x damage but will get melted in the process, still worth even for CV fighters, having a scout plane at 1500m doing circles pver the formation will farther distract the AI.
Surface engagements are the only time the AI has a chance but even then they can sail into well placed torps. DDs melt on banzai attacks but a CL has just as many torps and will make it into range and back alive.
If you do get stuck in a bad engagement you can alway retreat in a few minutes, not long enough for them to do any serious damage and you'll repair out of combat.
Only ships I have lost are two subs who died to yolo the yorktown, they both were sinking until I blew ballast tanks, I could have retreated with them but they had a good angle on a crippled CV so I fired off the 2 tubes that were loaded and sent her down.

Just me and the Ocean. I'd spent months fixing and cleaning after my initial purchase of a Macgregor 25 that sat unused for 20 years in the high desert of San Bernardino County. I added a Si-Tex AIS 300 system, a brand new Cobra VHF radio, A TV with DVD Combo that runs on12V, a Bluetooth AM/FM sound system. I redid all the electrical, rerouted and plugged in to a brand new UB 121000 Group 27 battery (Which, I must say, I highly recommend.). I bought an 8 person dinghy for a tender, put fuel in my 6 gallon plastic gas tank that runs my 1983 Honda 8HP 4 stoke outboard in which I rebuilt, added new fuel lines, fuel filter, carburetor gaskets, spark plugs, oil, and replaced the entire charging circuit due to mice invasion in the high desert chewing the wires. And there I was. I pulled into, "Davies Launch Ramp" in Long Beach, Ca. . I stepped the mast, aired up the dinghy, and set sail. By this time it was late, about 6:30PM, the Sun had set, I was determined though. No other sailboats were on the water, as a matter of fact there was only 1 boat and it was coming in.
I felt ready, I'd spent all of the last bit of Summer preparing. I got my boat under the bridge as the antennae ting, ting, tinged, across the cross members to the other side. "Shwew", I thought, I made it under. 34' read the bridge gauge water level and so I thought I'd better remember that number. That's my limit. Hopefully, on the way in it is no less! I made it to the main Marina center, A bigger open area where, during the daytime, many boats and people enjoying life take place. At this time, no one was around just boats docked and dark along the Picturesque silhouette of Million Dollar Houses that lined the North East drag. I continued left to pass the various dockside restaurants that draw crowds during the average business day. And of course one in particular stands out as the bright signage glows bright red in the night , "Ballast Point". Past this is the Channel that leads to the open Ocean.
This was it, I'd planned, taken sailing classes to get my ASA101, thought about safety, and I was finally doing it. At this point, the wind was at 0, the sea was calm, and it was very dark. Thankfully, there were a few visual aids that I was able to use surrounding me. A line of commercial ships anchored a few miles out of the channel, and several oil rigs that were brightly lit. I motored for a time and was very leery about breaking through the commercial ship

"They let her go for a really long time, Commander. Several months without maintenance, and then nearly a year of decommissioned use by the Dutch meant she wasn't kept up to military standards, allowing a lot of her systems to go into disrepair after her abandonment." Patty said.
K-9 managed to stop her fit and took a deep breath.
"I'm okay, Commander. I can make the trip. Please, don't give up on me too." K-9 said softly.
"You don't need to make the trip. Kashino has you covered." Isaac said as the Kashino pulled up next to the stricken sub.

It's the centerboard model, which tragically gives up the built-in liquor storage in favor of a I know the C&C 40 pretty well, having started racing on one, but this is my first boat over 30 feet.
So I could use y'all's thoughts on 1) The passage home, and 2) things to watch out for in the C&C 40 realm.
Goal 0: Seaworthiness.
The boat's on the hard right now, so we have the opportunity to check electronics, pumps, and thru-hulls easily. The survey should reveal any other emergent issues. I know there's some elevated moisture levels in the balsa-cored deck, but no soft spots. Other than that, what do I need to look out for?
Goal 1: Moving boat from Southern MA to Hampton, Virginia in ... April/May?
My inclination, having spent relatively little time offshore and having a crew whose expertise is two steps above "sentient ballast" (love you guys), is to stay inside as much as possible - Buzzards Bay Long Island Sound to Sandy Hook, where we wait for a weather window to run outside along the Jersey coast and into Delaware Bay, where we take the C&D Canal into the Chesapeake and then head home. I'm contemplating hiring a delivery captain to come along. Y'all think that might be overkill?
Goal 2: Keep the boat in shape.
What're we looking for long-term? How can we make the boat more livable/maintainable, and maximize enjoyment time?
Intention for this boat is to own it for 4 years, race it on the weekends, take 1-2 offshore trips/year to build experience + sea time, and then to sell the boat for a bluewater crossing boat and cross the Atlantic in 2025/2026.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.
Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.
The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:
"What's sarong with that?"
I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).
His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.

Hey there,
I'm looking to collect some opinions on some of the better options for 20 foot and under trailer-sailers...
*However*, I'm in Ontario, Canada, and so many options I've heard of are pretty rare here. I'm certainly open to looking for anything, but would love some thoughts on what I should look for.
I've heard lots of talk of things like WWP19 for instance, but in all my looking I don't think I've seen a single one for sale here. That being said, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places too...
Some of the boats I have heard mention of are:
I have no strong feelings towards brand, just quality, but ultimately what I'm looking for is something that I can pull behind my minivan... So nothing too heavy. It does have a 3.3L V6 engine and is rated for 3500lbs of towing. I prefer to buy something used and put the sweat equity in myself, as long as it's sound.
I have a wife that is comfortable learning but very much a novice sailor. I have a bit more experience, but limited to dinghy sailing, and I have two younger kids (10 & 7) that enjoy the water. We have TONS of lakes around here and in many cases waterways that connect them but also many isolated lakes. I'd like to be able to day trip on them with the 4 of us, plus bring my mom along from time to time. Stability and something for my wife to feel comfortable learning on would be a huge boon.
Much thanks in advance for any bearings you can give me.

The crew of the Anna-Liza jumped, pushed, and climbed their way back onto their ship. Mari and Elijah finally found themselves up on the deck and Elijah wasted no time in shooting a few of his darts at those he could see aboard the new ship but Mari stared for a moment. She had never seen a ship quite like it before and she had taken note of every ship she had seen; like faces she would easily remember a ship if she saw it again. Each of them were like a face in their own way, no two were alike in every way. The way the wuiwa wood ran down the sides of the ship changed from carpenter to carpenter and therefore changed from ship to ship. The way the handrails were originally carved differed and then when they had been damaged in raids, hijacks or storms they would look differently from the rest after repairs were made.
Mari snapped herself out of her stupor and threw a bolt of lightning at the flap on the starboard side that was closest to her but the way the pirate ship was rocking beneath her threw off her shot by over a foot. She watched as the last of her crew clambered up Rutaโs vines and realised that she was the last one left, no doubt because their ship was the more familiar territory and much higher than the pirate ship. If they were to board this new enemy they would need their advantage after all.
She jumped at the vine and was helped up the last few feet by Jezzen who had seen her following him. He pulled her up just as a shot opened a chunk of the shipโs side where her legs had been dangling moments before. Jezzen replied back with a spark but the shot had disappeared into his ship and the lightning fizzled out on the nonconductive wood, leaving nothing but a small burn.
The pirates down on the deck of their ship watched as the privateers fought back from their own ship and acted quickly; the captain was already ordering his men to cut the last of the ropes and vines away and shouted to his helmsman to put the ship into a dive. The Anna-Liza rocked as the pirate ship finally detached itself, but no-one aboard knew why it lurched; all they knew is that a new enemy had arrived and were trying to harm them. Two in a single day, this was to be a tale for all to hear in the next inn they were welcomed into.
As the pirate ship fell away and turned back east to head away from the west-bound Anna-Liza the five pushers on Govanโs crew nudged their ship forward in pursuit of the fleeing enemy. The flooders threw sharp icicles and the sh

Kerwyn spent a good bit of the money left over after the dagger purchase, buying a few simple tunics and some breeches so that his armor would not need to be worn every day. The threats were few at sea, and likely with enough time to re-dress if need be. Shopping done, Kerwyn headed back to the ship to see if there was anything he could do to help before they were ready to push off.
He had worked up a bit of a sweat moving cargo around by the time that he saw Mallory making her way up the gangplank. She had her own small collection of merchandise she had apparently purchased, although he hadnโt seen her in the plaza.
Kerwyn wiped his hands off on a nearby rag before walking over to meet Mallory. He resisted the urge to ask her if she was just now returning from her visit with Gabriel, as it truly was none of his business. Thankfully, Mallory saved him from having to start a conversation.
