Ballast tanks size and position

Hi! Dear seawolves, does the following play a role in operating a sub?

  1. Must ballast tanks be of one size and volume?
  2. Must ballast tanks be always arranged in one line?
  3. Having, for instance, there equally sized ballast tanks placed diagonally will or will not cause issues?

Ballast Tank Issue

Can someone help me!

I’m building a submarine and have wired the ballast tanks to my navigation terminal.

The ballast tanks have power and are wired from set_target level to the velocity_y_out on the navigation terminal.

The engine works fine

However when I test the sub, if I use navigation terminal and click up, the sub moves down. If I click down, the sub moves up.

What stupid mistake have I made?

Toggle extra ballast tank?

so my friends and i just switched to the R-29 and we noticed that in currents its a little hard to get it to go down so we want to wire the bottom airlock to be a 3rd Ballast tank.

if we wire the Nav Terminal V-y to the pump it works as a ballast tank but we want a switch so that we can make it a normal air lock when we don't need the extra water how do we do that?

I have tried rewiring it through a switch first and it doesn't send the 'y' signal and i have tried wiring it through a relay component but that doesn't either

How fast average submarine can descend/ascend without engine assistance just by using ballast tanks?

It's very strange that I can't seem to find this information anywhere... Wikipedia only lists horizontal speeds, not vertical speeds. And there is literally 0 information about this. Maybe you guys know?

Also, how different is dive/ascend speeds in modern vs WWII subs? I wonder if there is some kind of cap that prevents subs from diving/surfacing too fast with just ballast tanks.

Looking for advice on designing ballast tanks (see: what variables determines if a sub goes up or down?)

Hiya all, first-time sub designer here. I've run into a bit of a frustrating problem with designing my sub. One goal I had with this sub was to ensure that we would still have y-direction control even if or or two rooms (~20%) of the ship was flooded. To that end, the ship has some pretty massive ballast tanks; the current optimal neutral buoyancy level is 0.20. However, unintuitively this seems to have had the opposite effect on my sub than I had hoped for: since neutral buoyancy already has the tanks so empty, there is very little wiggle room to further empty the ballast tanks to compensate for flooded rooms. I've deleted a few of the ballast tanks to get the neutral buoyancy up to 0.45, but even still I can't flood more than one room of the ship before I sink into the abyss.

Does smaller ballast=better positive y-direction control? This really doesn't make much sense to me, since I had assumed that higher % of ship filled with air = greater lift. Or is the formula which determines if a ship sinks or floats based solely on the optimal neutral ballast level, with flooded rooms being effectively added to the water level in the tanks to determine if a ship sinks or rises?

Any help or observations would be appreciated. Thanks

The Mk 0 Self Propelled Container - A Unlicensed Homemade "Submarine" (Featuring a Destructible Ballast Tank, Defective Sonar and More)

https://preview.redd.it/0wf5jc2p4pj61.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=8c9d222e7e0e717a36b358d26637b47b345f8679

The Mk 0 Self Propelled Container is a defective submarine made by unlicensed builders from a cargo pod and a freshwater tank, recommended for rebels or criminals who don't have any other options.

-As the freshwater tank (which acts as a ballast) is just barely bolted on, it will detach if the connecting struts are damaged, forcing the crew to navigate by manually adjusting the pumping speed of the internal drainage pump. When replacing the ballast tank, be sure to repair the connecting struts before paying the station for a new ballast tank (via the "replace all shuttles" option) or the new ballast tank will immediately fall off again.

-As it was originally an entirely separate piece of equipment, the ballast tank must be accessed from the outside.

-The sonar will momentarily lose all signal every ten seconds or so - sometimes sooner.

-The reactor is barely up to the task it has been assigned. The coilgun is particularly power hungry, and its charge rate must be kept low while the sub is moving quickly.

-The Mk 0 has a single drainage pump and single vent, which can only serve the entire sub when the doors are left open.

-The sub will flood if the internal doors are not manually closed before opening the airlock.

-A single diving suit is tossed on the floor to protect the crew in the event of an emergency.

-Flickering lights, cables draped loosely on the floor, and a sparking junction box add to the ambience.

Circular ballast tanks query.

I'm making a sub and the ballast tanks are circular. When making the hull you obviously have to use multiple hulls and link them together (as well as with the ballast pump which I have done). Unfortunately it'll only pump water into the main hull it's inside, not the ones connected either side.

This is my first sub and I've tried looking around for a fix to this problem but unfortunately have found nothing. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!

I'm able to provide screenshots of the ballast/hull layouts but it's basically a main hull going up with thinner hulls on either side. Thank you for your help!

Confused About Pumps/Ports, Trying to Drain Ballast Tanks

I'm working on making a submarine, but I'm very confused about the numbers (or lack of) when it comes to fluids.

To fill the ballasts, I simply have some electric hatches that open up. This results in a nice quick crash dive. But I can't find a solution for draining them that's even half as quick.

In real submarines, one-way ports are opened on one end and the other end is flooded with high-pressure gas, usually air. However, I don't think it's possible to do this in Stormworks, so I'm just trying to pump them out.

But I don't know how to make a quick bilge-pump. What's the ratio of pumps to ports? Right now I have one large fluid port hooked up to 10 pumps, which are then hooked up to 16 small fluid ports around the exterior of the sub. But this results in a shockingly slow draining rate, even when the exterior ports are above the surface.

This means that water pressure isn't my bottle neck, but I have no idea what is. Is it the one large fluid port in the ballast tank? Or the fact that the one port is being serviced equally by 10 large pumps? Or the 16 exterior outake ports?

Should I be chaining the 10 pumps instead of having them all branch off? I just don't know how to test without trying everything.
