A list of puns related to "Phryne"
This is really random, but I've been trying to get into this Facebook group for a while now (it's private) because it's one of the few places that still actively posts about the show. It has over 15k members and yet my request to join has been declined multiple times. I messaged two of the mods who never got back to me. I have no idea why I'm not allowed(?) to get in, am I not fitting their ~criteria~ or something lol? I have a normal FB account. Everyone keeps talking about what's been posted in the group and I'm sitting here like "Well cool, I can't see it". Did anyone else have that problem?

Phryne
Born as Mnesarete around 371 BCE, the woman who came down to us in history as βPhryneβ began life as a Thespian refugee. According to the Greek historian Pausnias, the principal deity of Thespiae was Eros. The principal festivals were the Erotidia, and other sources suggest they worshipped the Muses with a festival on Mount Helicon. Whether she was born into the position or became one during her early years remains a question today, but we know her native home of Thespiae was razed at roughly the same point in time by Thebes. Located in central Greece, north of the Gulf of Corinth, Thespiae fell in events subsequent to the Corinthian War and its surviving population was forced to flee to Athens. It isn't known precisely when Thespiae was restored, but Phryne seems to have remained an expatriate living in Athens rather than returning to her homeland.
At this remove it is very difficult to sort out what stories about Phryne are myth and which are historical. There is little doubt that she was a historical person as there are attestations to her statues in several locations. The Historian Plutarch tells us that she was nicknamed βPhryneβ meaning βtoadβ for either her complexion or a snub nose, however much of what we know of her comes from Athenaeus of Naucratis, who lived in the late 2nd and early 3rd centu

When I heard that there was going to be a Chinese version of Miss Fisherβs Murder Mysteries I just about died of happiness.
I grew up reading Kerry Greenwood, have all 20 of the books, loved loved loved the Acorn TV series starring Essie Davis as the wonderful, glamorous Phryne. And so when I was able to start Miss S (I donβt know if there are ENG subs, I speak Chinese), I tried so so so soooo hard to love it.
First of all, if you love clothes, the show is worth a watch for the absolute glorious fashion alone. In fact, I would say Miss S outdoes the Australian Phryne - every single thing she wears is stunning, drool-worthy and a complete show piece. I kept trying to screenshot every outfit so that I could go back and admire it for the sartorial qualities alone.
Second, the cast looks absolutely stunning and the sets are too - a little heavy handed on the CGI in the beginning but no expense was spared to make Old Shanghai come alive. Ma Yili rocks that bob cut and those glorious outfits and Gao Weigang is just a tall drink of water in his suits and overcoats. They look amazing together which always makes the FL and ML combo easier to root for.
Third, the mysteries are ok. In the first episode, thereβs quite a bit of pointless showboating to establish Miss Sβs prowess, but after awhile it gets more βwatchableβ and you do get into the mysteries.
So whatβs wrong with it? Well, the acting. Phryne Fisher of the novels is a confident, glamorous, free spirited, modern minded woman and Essie Davis captures that perfectly on screen. You just know that if Phryne Fisher were a real person, she would have been a Bright Young Thing grown up and turned Lady Detective. Miss S? Iβm Chinese so I donβt feel too bad saying this - sheβs like your wealthy Shanghaiese aunt who swans around with a smarmy attitude that is more βnouveau richeβ than βglamourous.β Ma Yili is a talented actress but I think sheβs better off in lower-key characters like the wife in The The First Half of My Life. She does the best she can with Phryneβs confident, off the cuff charm, but it doesnβt come naturally to her and it shows.
Similarly, Nathan Pageβs Detective Inspector Robinson is a strong, quiet, principled man with a sense of humor and understated appreciation for strong women in the truest sense. A minor character in the books but our leading man on screen, Detective Inspector Robinson never quite gets with Phryne in the Acorn TV series because he loves her as she is - her free spirite

Does anybody know how Phryne developed this attitude?
This question came to me after watching Joker.
What's her reason for going against Societies views on beauty??? π€π€π€π€

The Neon Jezebel is set in the high society of the roaring 1920s with speakeasies, assertive smart women and former soldiers from World War I still dealing with its after-effects. There are also government-approved vigilante groups whose members include people moderate superpowers similar to Marvel's tv version of Jessica Jones, Dare Devil and Luke Cage.
We begin with a brother and sister from a family who owns several major corporations. The brother was slated to take over the family business so he became a soldier to avoid doing so. This gave the sister the opportunity to run the business instead. There are also other family obligations he is avoiding like becoming part of the same vigilante group that prior generations belonged to. The brother, who is back from the war decides to become an adventurer/bodyguard so his sister can continue running the business. It's during his first job that we get to meet the NEON Jezebel. The Neon Jezebel is one of those people with moderate superpowers. Is she is a villain or a hero, is she part of a sanctioned vigilante group or not? The one of several mysteries and conspiracies that one experience listening to the podcast.
I am a sucker for the sounds, dialog and progressive attitudes of fictional detectives from the 20's. This podcast has the same feel is as the Phryne Fisher mysteries. I thought having the vigilante groups and people with powers but it fit in nicely with everything else.
The production and sound effects are good but there wasn't any creative use of sound. They got an A- for voice acting because the narrator's accented English(it sounds like either French, Belgium or German accent) was sometimes difficult for me to hear.
Specifically her in the war as a medic, how she became rich after being poor, her living in poverty, her parents, her travels after the war and I think it's revealed she was in some sort of dangerous relationship from her time in Paris unless I'm mistaken? I was also wondering how different the books are. Do they have the same murders and backstory?
I find her past to be quite interesting and I wish they'd exploded it more during the show.
Maybe the name is merely a coincidence, but the story is too good not to tell.
Back in ancient Greece, around 350 BC, there was a courtesan named Phryne. In Greece, the term courtesan was used to denote a former slave who had somehow managed to regain their freedom.
The important thing about Phryne was that, unlike the Amazon, this woman was a total smoke. I mean, like, Gal Gadot beautiful, Margot Robbie hot. Some sculptor dude even used her as a model for his statue of Aphrodite - the goddess of Beauty. That's how pretty she was.
However, one day Phryne was caught swimming naked in the ocean or something, as you do, and was put on trial to be executed because apparently skinny dipping is an act of blasphemy and defiance to the gods. However, her lawyer, being the total chad that he was, saved Phryne from execution in the best way possible.
How you may ask? By ripping off her clothes and putting her super hot bod on display for all the old geezers trying to kill her.
Now apparently, her body was so divine, so godly and perfect, that the conclusion was made that to kill her would be to go against the gods themselves. There is recorded texts that say the men in that courtroom agreed that her breasts alone literally contained seeds of divinity, meaning that as a divine being herself, she couldn't have been at fault.
But then there's Phryne Jamil, and I don't really think toads are all that divine, do you?
