EDIT 2: Gonna dm everyone who commented interested.
Hi all,
I'm in a bit of a conundrum with a pool installer/manufacturer, Kayak Pools Midwest, and I could use your advice. Any insight you can provide is truly appreciated. We're very new to this whole thing.
Last Summer we decided we wanted to purchase an inground pool to be installed. After vetting a number of options we opted to go with Kayak Pools Midwest (we're in TN). The pool was in our budget and Kayak had been in business a long time, so it seemed like a good value for the money. They have hundreds of positive reviews on the web. Seems safe, right?
After the consultation and a couple of phone calls we were told the pool would be scheduled for install in August. Kayak told us we'd receive weekly updates about the process, etc leading up to the install. They all seemed very helpful and attentive. For just under $50k, I'd expect that. We signed our contract and provided our initial down payment ($12.5k) in July. That's where everything changed.
Issue #1: When we spec'd the pool, we opted for a specific liner color as well as some other additional options. After signing the contract, taking our deposit, and going a month without any updates we were told the liner we requested was no longer being made and were told we would have to go with what they had. That wasn't acceptable to us, so we called Latham, who makes their liners, and they told us the liners weren't discontinued at all, but they were out of stock and it'd probably be next season before they were available. This is the first lie we caught them in.
We confronted them about what Latham told us and they were a bit puzzled. They called Latham, confirmed, and claimed there was a mixup. Maybe it was an honest mistake. I'm a reasonably guy so we agreed to put off the install until the Spring so we could get exactly what we wanted.
Issue #2: Kayak reached back out in September in said out pool was complete and asked if we had a location to store it prior to install. There had never been a conversation about us storing the pool at any time prior to this, so it caught us by suprise. We told them we didn't have a place to store it and expected they keep it at their facility. They agreed. Once again, not a huge deal but there's a pattern of lack of communication here.
Issue #3: March rolls around and the office opens back up. We called our install coordinator to get an update. We opted to sub contract out the electrical work, backfilling and permitting
... keep reading on reddit β‘A few people I've read on here have had questions about BKC kayaks so I figured I'd give my two cents. I recently went to upgrade from my crappy emotion kayak to a pedal drive and went with a PK13 pedal drive from BKC as I thought it looked nice at a good price. Well after waiting a little over a month for delivery which isn't too bad, they shipped me an FK13 kayak that doesn't even accept the pedal drive that was shipped with it. They then offered for me to buy the other kayak as well or ship it back. After going over the kayak I noticed some various quality issues. The screws for various attachments on the kayak were all barely in and the plastic foot petals were low quality. The FK13 is still a 1k kayak but I didn't think it meets that standard. I would definitely suggest spending a bit more on other brands then trying to cheap out like I did. Thankfully they were pretty quick with customer service and will be sending me a refund. Now to decide what other pedal drive to go with!
Hello all you wonderful water-bound folks. We are going on a trip (Antartica) in a year which requires us to be intermediate kayakers. Right now - we are only very basic.
Do you have a company you recommend for sea kayaking, where we will learn to do wet exits and assisted recovery? We should also be comfortable using dry skirts. Many thanks!!!
Anyone know why theres a big push behond paddle production? Recently saw Waka making a few paddle shapes as well as spade kayaks. And I know Jackson made some team paddles but you don't see those anymore. Why not stick to Werner, galasport, ect. I don't know how much of a market there is.
For a couple of years now I've been looking at picking up a pedal kayak. I look at all the websites and forums and youtubes and all that jazz, and I have seen from time to time what appear to be identical kayaks with different brand names on them. I've also seen the straight up Chinese kayaks which often look remarkably like many of the popular brands we are all familiar with. So the question is, are the chinese manufacturers producing many of the kayaks on the US market or are they knocking them off and selling them in other markets??? maybe someone can shed a little insight. Thanks.
As the title suggests, I found a used Brooklyn Kayak Company BKC SK287 near me for $300 on OfferUp. When questioning the buyer as to their reasons for selling, they simply stated they are moving to Colorado and wanting to get into whitewater kayaking.
I currently own a Lifetime 10ft recreational kayak that I've used for 2 seasons on calm waters, but I have been wanting to step into sea/ocean kayaking -- mainly kayaking along coastlines, harbors and beaches.
Is this a good deal and do any of you have any experience with this kayak company?
There was a sale today at a warehouse type store that ends with co. Brand new kayaks were being sold for super cheap and fully equipped. We arrived a few minutes before opening and the staff pointed us to where we could get a kayak. There were only 18 available, and 3 were left. We took one and fifteen minutes later they announced that there were no more kayaks available.
Now some people were disappointed, but no one really made a fuss about it. No one, except Karen...
She started huffing and stomping her feet in front of the entrance staff, claiming that « they shouldnβt advertise the kayaks if they donβt even have enough for everyoneΒ Β» and that she « deserved to have a kayak because theyβre just so expensive and I have a family to feedΒ Β».
The staff politely explained they would receive some more over the weeks and that she could come back at that time. She waved her hand at the staff and made her way back to her car.
At that point, me and my mom were loading the kayak on top of the car. My mom went in the store to get some groceries and I stayed in the car as I wasnβt feeling well.
About 10 minutes later, I hear rattling coming from the side of the car. I took a look, and there was entitled mom with two of her crotch goblins, trying to undo the straps and take the kayak.
I jumped out of the car and said pretty loudly « may I help you?!Β Β». Hereβs the convers that followed:
Me: May I help you..?!
EM: Go away, weβre just loading our kayak on our car!
Me: Yeaaaah, thatβs MY car. Iβm gonna have to ask you to leave or Iβm calling the cops.
EM: Uhh, canβt you see Iβm a struggling mom?! I just need the kayak to make my kids happy! Look at them, theyβre so sad not to have one.
Her kids were still trying to undo the straps, which they were barely able to reach.
Me: Please take your hands off of the straps, kids. Thatβs my car.
EM: Donβt you talk to my KIDS that way! Iβll have you arrested for child mol*station! I just want the kayak and then weβll go, why canβt you do a good gesture for us?!
Me: Because itβs mine... And youβre crazy lady, I didnβt even touch your kids. Iβm giving you one last chance to go back to your car or Iβm calling the cops.
EM stood there with her arms crossed and gave me a defiant look. That was all I needed, and I called the cops.
They arrived maybe 10 minutes later, and EM had gotten back to trying to untie the straps. I let her do it because I thought the cops would see her and itβd be more proof.
And gos
... keep reading on reddit β‘So, I tried kayaking for the first time last week and fell in love instantly. I'm going again tomorrow to make sure it wasn't a fluke (and mostly just for fun lol), but I could see myself getting really into this and maybe buying a kayak for myself next year when I've saved up enough. I'm interested to hear what things people wish they had known when they started out! Gear, technique, preparation, lingo, anything really. Thanks!
Edit: wow thanks for all the tips! I have a lot more questions and a lot more to learn but I'm excited! If there's a paddler in or around Toronto this June and who wouldn't mind teaching me a few things I'd love to meet up! Or even if it's just another beginner looking for company, let me know! Or Vancouver in July! (Doing a lot of domestic travelling this summer)
I am looking to purchase my first Kayak, however options are very limited where I am located. Because of this, I am hoping to purchase a Kayak online and have it shipped to my house. Could anyone recommend any websites to accomplish this? I am in the U.S.
Also- I am looking to spend ~$300, please let me know if you have any recommendations! I will mostly be on rivers, some whitewater maybe, but nothing too crazy. Mostly looking for a kayak to use for exercise. I would like to be able to do some whitewater kayaking, but understand if its not possible to get a whitewater kayak at this price point.
I spent the first part of my long weekend out at the beach town where I do a lot of kayak fishing. I spent more time fishing this area, last summer, than I spent at home. I'm not unfamiliar with the waters. This spot has a jetty that has a lot of great fishing. After a morning of fishing the IntraCoastal Waterway, the app on my phone (Nautide) said to expect 2ft swells on the ocean side.
I paddled out, did a bit of fishing along the jetty, caught nothing, but it was uneventful. And then the tide changed. And the wind changed. What started as 2ft swells quickly turned into 5ft. I swear this happened in about 10 minutes. I noped the fuck out as fast as I could. I was most of the way back to the beach where I launched when a fairly large fishing boat (think off-shore fishing charters) hauled past me. Fast.
The wake, combined with the already nasty seas, quickly flipped my boat. Fortunately, I've done a bunch of flip/rescue practice in the freshwater lake that I frequently fish. "I've got this," I thought. That lake is never nasty. I wasn't prepared for trying to right my kayak and get back onto it in those conditions. I figure I spent about 10, maybe 15 minutes trying to right my kayak. Honestly, it could have been a week with the way that it felt. I failed miserably to get my kayak righted.
Before I continue... I never hit any water without my PFD properly fitted and attached. The PFD has flares, a whistle, a mirror, and (in saltwater) a marine radio.
As I reached for my radio to hit the red distress button, some good Samaritans pulled up. It took some work, but they got me up and into their boat. We left my month-old kayak in the water.
Almost immediately, the US Coast Guard was on us. I gave them a description of the boat. The good Samaritans were informed by USCG to drop me off at the dock at their station just around the corner.
The medical check was uninteresting except for the high pulse and high blood pressure. Given the circumstances, I wasn't surprised. I was shaking and out of breath for a while. Before long, the USCG vessel out in the inlet radioed in. They had my boat and everything that was attached to it.
I lost a bunch of soft plastics, a Plano box full of jig heads, a bunch of gatorade, and not much else. I leash the important stuff down.
So... what did I learn? And why am I posting this? I'm hoping someone can learn from my experience.
Looking to rent some kayaks this weekend with my girlfriend. Is there a specific rental company that is better than others? What are best areas to kayak? Should we look into a guide or just go solo? Any advice is good advice
Hello paddling friends. I am in need of a replacement skeg for my Intex Challenger Pro kayak. They are not available on the company's website. Does anyone know where I can get one? Help me pleaseeeeeee
Update: Heard back from Intex customer service supervisor, they said they might get more stock at the end of July but no guarantees.
