RICE Mod Dev Diary #17 - Yazd Flavor Pack: Abode of Worship (More Iranian Flavor!)

https://preview.redd.it/k5ughbubg8981.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2defad0595994e6f727a59dbfc585932e03a3744

I'm Cybrxkhan, creator of the Regional Immersion and Cultural Enrichment (RICE) mod, which adds simple "Flavor Packs'' to different parts of the world (Steam link). Today's dev diary covers the upcoming flavor pack, Yazd: Abode of Worship. While Yazd is most known as a center of Zoroastrianism in EU4, this update also adds flavor for south-central Iran and to a lesser extent the Iranian world in general, from history changes to the opportunity to change the definition of Xwedodah. A beta is up here on GitHub - though stable, it’s missing content. ETA will be next weekend, and as always, feel free to check out my discord or mods' website.

With Royal Court around the corner, this will be the final major update to RICE before then (if there's time a small update may be released with miscellaneous tweaks and additions).

Sadeh Festival

Sadeh (or Sada) is a major Iranian holiday which takes place fifty years before Nowruz (Persian New Year). It traditionally marks the coldest night of the year and involves the lighting of bonfires to ward off the cold and evil. Sadeh first gained popularity during the Sassanid era, and remained popular in the medieval period among both Zoroastrians and Muslims, celebrated by the likes of the Samanids, Buyids, and even Seljuks.

In-game, a new decision, Celebrate the Sadeh Festival, is available to anyone who is Zoroastrian or in the Iranian culture group, or whose capital is such. It works like other festival decisions in RICE. If you’re Zoroastrian and own a county in the Duchy of Yazd, you also have the option of going to the cave of Chak-Chak to visit the eternal fire there.

Qanats

There is a new regional innovation called Qanats, available to some Arabic, Iranian, Berber, and Turkic cultures at game start. Originating from the Iranian plateau, these underground canals provided a critical, reliable water source in arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa.

Yazd to Zoroastrian Persia - The hardest campaign I have ever played.

So, I'm making a mod to add in the Sassanian dynasty as a nation, and I decided to see if you could, in the base game, form Zoroastrian Persia. And I was... right.

Playing as Yazd, you can have the fun of...

Constant invasions

No Alliances

Constant Coalitions

#DEFAULT IDEAS AND MISSION TREE

The horrible Persia mission tree!

It was 1560, and I still had only 400 development, and was 145% behind the rest of the world in terms of institutions. When the event fires that causes all of the Timurids' vassals to break free you are not included so you have to fight the weakened Timurids by yourself. So next time you want a challenging nation, don't go for Byzantium or Theodoro, go for poor old Zoroastrian Yazd. I also could have been playing Persia completley wrong, that's a very real possibility.
