Comparing BSO and Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster Audition Requirements
Both top orchestras are auditioning concertmaster replacements for Malcolm Lowe (BSO) and William Preucil (Cleveland). By the end of October, in theory both orchestras will have selected their new leaders.
What is fascinating to me is the difference in the repertoire requirements.
BSO: http://bso.http.internapcdn.net/bso/images/uploads/ConcertmasterLiveRoundRepertoire.pdf
Cleveland: https://www.clevelandorchestra.com/globalassets/1920/documents/concertmasterrepertoirelistsept2020.pdf
Cleveland is more prescriptive while BSO is arguably more demanding with a third (more) modern concerto vs. the Bach Chaconne and the inclusion of a chamber music test.
Key differences in the non-solo repertoire:
- Cleveland asks for Mozart 7 and 39, Schumann 2, Strauss Don Juan (tough comparison against Preucil's famous take), Strauss Ein Alpensinfonie, and Bach Laudamus Te
- BSO asks for Brahms 4, Debussy La Mer, Dvorak 8, Mahler 1 (candidates may be wise to study Richard Svoboda's interpretation), Prokofiev 5, Shostakovich 5 (a personal favorite), and Strauss Til Eulenspiegel
To me, it seems perhaps that Cleveland places a higher priority (relatively speaking) on baroque and early classical era music while the BSO emphasizes more romantic and post-romantic era music. It also likely reflects the influences of the two music directors who both are advocates for new music and experienced European conductors of orchestral and opera music, but one (Welser-Most) being older and from a Viennese tradition while the other (Nelsons) is much younger and is influenced by Lativan tradition.
Both ask for Mendelssohn Scherzo from Midsummer, Schubert 2, Bach St. Matthew Passion, Beethoven Missa Solemnis Sanctus, Brahms 1, Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade, Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra, Tailor's Dance, and Ein Heldenleben (my favorite CM solo, but a beast), and Tchaikovsky Swan Lake.

I'm Maestro Michael Francis. I lead three orchestras in America and Europe, including Mainly Mozart in San Diego whose musicians include Principal Players from the country's top orchestras (including the LA Phil, Cleveland Orchestra and the Met Opera). AMA!
Hello Reddit, very excited to be doing my first Reddit AMA. I'm Maestro Michael Francis. I used to play double-bass with the London Symphony Orchestra. After jumping in for various conductors at the last minute, I am now a full-time conductor and Music Director of The Florida Orchestra, the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, and Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.
I'm currently in the middle of conducting the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego whose orchestra features more Principal players from other great orchestras than any other Festival orchestra in the US. Tomorrow evening, I will be performing Mozartβs Davide penitente and Beethovenβs Violin Concerto with violist Augustin Hadelich.
Upcoming guest conducting projects include the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Detroit, Berlin Radio and Minnesota symphonies amongst others.
