A list of puns related to "Watchmen"
Ok it's alternate history. Nixon is still in office . The cold war has escalated further etc. But what about this very brief scene? What were the consequences?
Hi guys I have watched watchmen (ultimate cut) in my opinion it is one of the most underrated superhero movie also one of the finest(in my opinion) the way Zack Snyder showed it's universe was amazing. Pop culture reference, war, cinematography, background score, performances, characters everything was good! Don't know why critics don't like Zack Snyder filmsπ€·. I know there are some minor flaws in this movie but still it is much better than many superhero movies(in my opinion). It was way ahead of its time! Just wanted to know your thoughts. Thank you.
Havenβt watched it yet but just noticed it on there. It is 12 chapters and each chapter is 24-29 minutes long.
So the title is pretty self explanatory and I'm going to go to a comic store and was just wondering if Watchmen is ok for a 13 year old [me]. Im a bit confused about the age range because DC Comics says TEEN (12+) for one edition and Mature (17+) for another but the only difference is one has "HBO MAX SERIES" on it.
Thanks in Advance!
EDIT: I came back from the comic store and I got it. im prolly gonna re read later but ive decided it would be a good read
One of the most common complaints youβll see of the film is that the film glorified violence and as result the characters themselves. Itβs argued that everything from the gratuitous use of slo-mo and meticulously choreographed action sequences to something as minor as more professional-looking costumes played a role in making the characters cooler and more likable than they were in the comics. While the comic certainly avoids certain typical flashy action tropes I wouldnβt necessarily say the movie is at odds with the spirit of the comic in that aspect. In the comicΒ Moore and GibbonsΒ adopted some formal elements of traditional comics like a regimented 3Γ3 panel grid and a mostly three-color palette but whereas in more cheerful comics the three primary colors were dominant here the focus was on secondary colors. As a result, they were able to achieve a gritty feel without relying too much on blacks, greys, and browns that youβd expect from a typical grimdark comic. So what I am trying to get at is that the comic doesnβt stop being subversive because it utilized some of the stylistic conventions and tropes of the stories they were deconstructing. What matters more is how those conventions were utilized and even more important is theΒ contentΒ that all those elements are used to illustrate.
I would argue for the most part the movie follows a similar path. While it is true that the movie has Zack Snyderβs signature use of slo-mo and impeccable choreography, the action isnβt always βfunβ as it would be in a typical superhero movie. Take for example the alley fight in watchmen

While itβs a familiar situation that you see in a lot of action movies where a bunch of troublemakers mess with the wrong people and get their ass handed to them in a fun sanitized fight scene replete with funny banter and quips, here the action is brutal and grotesque. The camera doesnβt shy away from the consequences of the violence as it fixates on the bones breaking through flesh, mangled limbs, and the shattered teeth of the goons who are shown screaming in pain. Itβs also intercut with a scene where Manhattan learns that people who were once close to him have been getting cancer and he might be the cause, that combined with the ominous music gives the whole scene a sense of dread rather than catharsis. Contrast this with a similar alleyway fight scene in Wonder Woman and the difference is stark.

... keep reading on reddit β‘Without getting too bogged down in the details of the actual historic event, the Iranian hostage crisis was huge international news that began in late 1979, and lasted 444 days before the hostages were released. The American hostages were taken by militant Iranians and by all accounts the hostages were treated horribly. Thereβs some debate as to why the hostages were released (including a very interesting real world conspiracy theory), but what we do know is the situation certainly costed then President Jimmy Carter some of his reputation and was a factor in his loss to Ronald Reagan during the 1980 presidential election.
However in the Watchmen universe the event played out differently. I forget which bookend covers the event, but one of the chapters briefly mentions that President Nixon simply sent in the Comedian to free the hostages, and the historical event ended much quicker than it did in real life (a matter of weeks instead over a year). But the reason I decided to write this up now is the juxtaposition of the photos of the hostages being freed, something I believe gets overlooked quite a bit especially as we get further and further from when the event took place.
The hostages in reality, and presumably in the Watchmen timeline, were treated horribly by their captors and the hostages were thrilled to be freed. Here are some photos I found on google images showing how ecstatic they were to be freed from their harrowing ordeal. Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3. And compare that to the Watchmenβs photo of the hostages being freed, here.
Notice the difference? Even though in reality the event lasted well over a year, during which time the hostages were subjected to inhumane acts that caused many of them to attempt suicide, in reality when they were released they were all smiles and couldnβt had been happier. In the Watchmen universe they were held hostage for mere weeks before being freed, and yet they look more haggard and broken than they did in reality. The intent by Gibbons in this image to me is fairly obvious: whatever the Comedian did to free those people was more horrifying than the year+ of psychological torture they endured at the hands of thei

It just feels like a very chaotic presentation of a story and a lot of it is going over my head. Is this normal for a first read? Does it end up making more sense once i finish reading?
Please dont spoil anything after issue 5. Thanks
Title says it all. Time to beef up those Christrmas hauls!
Edit: This is an in-the-store only sale, not online. I only found out because I happened to go by B+N today. Edit 2: I hear that the sale is on for Monday as well!!
Anyone know if the gang have ever mentioned a Back Issues for Watchmen? I was reading Tom Kingβs Rorschach (which Iβd also love to see them cover) and realized thereβs no Watchmen ep. Seems like a surprising one not to do. Especially with the HBO series and some sequel comics coming out over the last few years. Unless Ben, Ethan, and Tiffany have already read it?
I'm not an expert on comics/graphic novels. Was Watchmen originally published as a graphic novel or is is a collected edition?
Zack Snyder's Watchmen is a divisive movie and even I would admit the movie is heavily flawed but some of the criticisms never quite sat right with me, especially since much of the discussions usually ignored some legitimate criticism that could be made of the film as well. So I wrote an essay addressing these issues.
The criticisms that I'll address in this essay.
The movie glorifying violence and its heroes
One often mentioned plothole with the ending (due to the lack of the squid).
What my own criticisms will be about
Here's the essay.

I would also like to say this is just based on my interpretation of the comic and the movie and would like to hear other POVs as well.
I was reading watchmen and read up to issue 4. I went to borrow 5 today, and now none of the watchmen books are borrowable. Did they get taken off or is my account being weird?
Edit: did I break a rule or something? Why is this being downvoted?
