I'm seeing large flocks of Swans and Geese migrating South. Envy. I guess they don't like it much either. We do have a local Swan flock that overwinters in Stump Lake: Trumpeter Swans (Cygnus buccinator), all over Minnesota

Trumpeter Swans are North Americaβs heaviest flying bird, with males averaging 26 pounds. To get all that weight up in the air the swans need at least a 100 meter-long βrunwayβ of open water: running hard across the surface, they almost sound like galloping horses.

This is a juvenile Trumpeter Swan suffering from lead poisoning at Lake Rebecca Park Reserve in Rockford, March 1st, 2021. Posting this to raise awareness of the potential dangers of lead in our environment and to encourage my fellow Minnesotans to advocate for these birds.
