Rosa canina, the Dog Rose

The Dog Rose

The dog-rose, Rosa canina, is a deciduous shrub that is native to the British isles, it is found in a wide variety of habitats but prefers hedgerows and scrubby patches of woodland, where it grows in a sprawling manner, its stems arching over each other and getting entangled with other briars and shrubs. It usually reaches about 1 to 3 metres in height but if its sharp, curved spines latch onto a tree-trunk or some other form of support it can grow to be quite a bit taller.

Spines and thorns

Unlike the other briars of the hedgerow, such as the Bramble, the β€˜thorns’ of the Dog Rose are actually spines, or modified leaves, grown from different cells to the stem of the plant, rather than from the same cells as with those of the bramble, they are of a similar construction though and serve the same purpose, having sharp ends which curve downwards, aiding the plant in its competitive climb towards sunlight.

Briar or Rose?

The Dog-rose is the most commonly found wild rose in the British isles and has many different common-names, you might otherwise know it as Sweet Briar, Hip Rose, Briar Rose, Wild Rose or Witch’s Briar. However it is most commonly known as the Dog Rose, although the reasons for this are lost in the mists of history.

Some people believe this is because the plant was purportedly used to treat dogs that had rabies, up until the disease was finally eradicated from the British isles in 1922. Others think it more likely that β€˜dog’ simply means β€˜common’, or β€˜inferior’, as it grows widely and freely and is considered to lack the beauty, fragrance, and sophistication of those varieties of Rose which have been cultivated over the centuries for the [gardens of our stately homes](https://www.reddit.com/r/ForestofBowland/comments/jp7bff/the_gardens_at_browsholme_hall/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&am

Description and Lore

Known most commonly as the dog-rose, this wild species of climbing rose is native to most of Europe, including Great Britain, northwestern Africa and the most westerly portions of Asia. It is not a herb, but a species of deciduous shrub, hardy and adaptable, that grows well both in the chilly north of England and the Mediterranean climate of southern France, Italy and north Africa. It was introduced as a wartime foodstuff into the United States during World War II, but due to its extreme hardiness and proclivity to spread it rapidly escaped captivity and can now be found wild in the hedges of north America, especially New England and the northern states.

As a climbing rose, height is difficult to determine. However, left to its own devices unaided, it generally averages a maximum of about 3-4m, with some cresting 5m if unaided by nearby trees. Dog-rose readily binds to wooden fenceposts, old houses and garden sheds, too, and can be trained in spring when the sap is flowing into a rather attractive climbing rose arrangement.

It possesses pinnate leaves that have 5 - 7 leaflets on each cluster. They are quite oval in shape, and serrated. The image provided is of the rose-hips and not the flowers, since the hips are actually the fruit and are the only medicinally used part of the plant. However, the flowers are a rather attractive pastel pink colour most commonly, but can be quite deeply pink or almost totally white. Generally the flowers are between 4-6cm in diameter, but as a truly wild species of rose it can vary between regions. The fruit, known as hips or rosehips, are a deep orange to deep red colour, about an inch long and half an inch thick, ovoid and with a blackened, dried cap. They are fleshy, but taste terrible raw, so don't eat them unless you're really genuinely pretty desperate.

[Product Question] Any thoughts on Supergoop!’s new hydrating oil sunscreen?

The official title is Daily Dose Hydra-Ceramide Boost + SPF 40 Sunscreen Oil PA +++, but I’m not trying to get added to r/titlegore today

I don’t always love this brand because they will often throw in ingredients that aren’t needed/are irritating to my skin. I’ve had good luck with a few products, though, and this one looks great. It comes in a 30ml bottle, which sucks since this is a weaker sunscreen and I’d want to use more to get good coverage. The ingredient list, which is listed below, is surprisingly great:

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dicaprylyl Ether, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Polybutene, Ethyl Olivate, Rosa Canina Seed Oil, Jojoba Oil/Macadamia Seed Oil Esters, Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene, Squalane, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Squalene, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Tocopherol, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, Phytosteryl Macadamiate, Ceramide NP (Ceramide III B), Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Bacillus Ferment, Phytosterols, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax

This has an excellent combination of nourishing oils, ceramide, and the salt hyaluronic acid. I was curious if any of you have received this for review/have any experiences or opinions on this? I’ve never tried a sunscreen oil and this seems like it’s a great (albeit expensive) product, so my finger has been hovering over the purchase button lol

Maria-sama RE:Watches Over Us: Episode 7

Valentine's in Japan is much like Christmas, in that it was cleverly marketed for maximum business profit. By funny coincidence, the first Valentine's chocolate was sold by a store known as the Mary Chocolate, in 1958. It didn't take long for the degeneracy of confectionary to infect the whole population. Instead of being reserved for someone special, it's common enough to buy chocolate for yourself (Jibun-choco) or for fellow female friends (Tomo-choco) or worse, just random guys you know (Giri-choco.) Today, about 60% of young women prepare chocolate for Valentine's day by hand, and a large proportion of the rest buy storebought chocolate. Honestly, I think the whole expenditure of time and money is the most tragic thing I can imagine.

This episode mentions the story of Gon the Little Fox, in connection to how Yumi has been sneaking about doing chores. In this legend, a fox steals food from a sick boy's mother, who later dies. Attempting to atone, the fox leaves anonymous gifts for the boy, resulting in the boy getting beat up by his fellow villagers for seeming to be a thief. One day, the boy finds the fox and shoots it in revenge, but feels remorse after learning about the fox's intentions. Truly an arousing story.

[Product Question] Alternative to Skinceuticals Emollience? Love it, but the $$!

Also, I’ve gone through the wiki on moisturisers, but I’m not sure what kind of moisturiser Emollience is, despite the name. I’ve tried other drugstore oil-based moisturisers but they aren’t nearly as good. Maria-sama RE:Watches Over Us: Episode 8

Gokigenkyou, everybody! To fill the emptiness in my heart, I'm going to be answering a question that nobody asked: who is Jesus Christ?

In roughly 0AD, a group of Middle Eastern tribals known as Jews existed, living under the rule of the Roman Empire. The Jews were divided into two primary religious sects known as the Sadducees and the Pharisees. The two groups both believed in a single omnipotent god, with others nonexistent or unworthy of worship. However, there were a handful of differences in their belief systems:

> The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question > Matthew 22:23 (ESV)

> For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.

> Acts 23:8 (ESV)

From a purely theological point of view, there were also differences between the Sadducees and the Pharisees comparable to the current differences between Protestants and Catholics. The Sadducees followed an equivalent to sola scriptura, with a highly literal by-the-book interpretation of their holy book. In contrast, the Pharisees had an extended oral tradition, vaguely equivalent to the Catholic Code of Canon.

Jesus was a Jewish man born to roughly near 0AD, and by Biblical accounts, was a troublemaker from a young age. He did not have a good relationship with his siblings or with his hometown. That said, there are absolutely zero accounts of him ever having sex with children, so he beats the Prophet Muhammad any day of the week.

Jesus became a preacher and proclaimed himself as the Son of God, and immediately came into conflict with both the Sadducees and the Pharisees. The Bible mentions his conflict with the Pharisees more prominently than it does the Sadducees, as the Sadducees belonged to an elite echelon of priests and politicans, while the Pharisees competed against Jesus for populist appeal.

In addition, Jesus was indifferent to or actively opposed to existing Jewish traditions, such as washing ones hands before meals. He denounced them frequently:

> Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, β€œWhy do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, β€œAnd why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, β€˜Honor your father and your mother,’ and, 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, β€˜If

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Reasons why you should use the rosehip oil for face

There are so many natural products on the market for your face, that it is hard to find the right one to use. Every product claim to be the best on the market. And, that you should use it on a regular basis. But we can’t just use all the products that claim to be the best. We need to know which one you actually can use.

One of these products is the rosehip oil for face. This is a natural oil that benefits your skin in a lot of ways. If you are looking for a natural product that will ensure healthy skin, then this is something to know more about.

rosehip oil for face

What is rosehip oil?

Rosehip isn’t a product very known to people. However, there are many benefits to using it on your skin. The rosehip itself is just as healthy to eat. But, what is rosehip oil?

No, it doesn’t have anything to do with roses. This is actually a busy called Rosa Canina rose bush that is growing mostly in Chile. And, the rosehip oil is getting extracted from the fruit and seed. This is also why you can eat it for getting a lot of health benefits.

These are some of the benefits that your skin will have when you are using rosehip oil.

It hydrates and moisturizes the skin

This is the most common and most important benefit of using Rosehip Seed Oil Cleanse Daily. It hydrates and moisturizes your skin from deep inside. This is more than just a normal moisturizer that only moisture the top layer of the skin.

If you have a dry skin that is hard to hydrate, then you should consider using the rosehip products. You will see a difference in no time. But, you need to remember that this needs to be a high-quality product.

Brighten your skin

The rosehip oil ensures a natural exfoliation. Meaning that it will reduce the dullness of your skin. Leaving you with skin that is glowing, vibrant, and healthy.

Many people are struggling with skin that looks dull and old. This is mostly because of a lack of exfoliation and having dry skin. With the rosehip, you will have healthy, glowing skin in no time.

Ensure that your skin stays younger and reduce the appearance of wrinkles

We all want to have healthy skin that is younger looking. If your skin looks younger and healthy, it takes a couple of years of your real age appearance. It is hard to find the right product that will actually work and make your skin younger-looking.

The mome

Allergic reaction to a Tower 28 lip gloss ?

I'd like to talk about something weird that happened today : I tried a Tower 28 lip gloss for the first time, and within seconds my lips felt numb, and I had a sensation of pins and needles, especially on my upper lip.

The sensation went from "wait, was this supposed to be plumping ?" about a minute in, to not being able to talk properly, and needing to get this off my lips ASAP because it hurts, just 30ish secs later. After removing it, the numbness slowly faded, to be back to my normal sensations about 15mins later. I didn't see any swelling.

I'm confused because this type of reaction never happened to me before, I have no issues with my other lip glosses (at worst, I felt a slight tingling with the Fenty gloss bomb, and stopped using it). Plus the brand insists on their products being hypoallergenic, suited for sensitive skin, so I wasn't worried about allergens. I'm surprised at how intense my reaction was (and I'm on antihistamines, this is bizarre but I can't find another explanation than an allergy). I patch tested it on my had and in my elbow crease, nothing happened.

I looked up what could cause lip numbness but haven't found anything of note that could explain why the gloss did this. I compared Tower 28's formula composition to all the other glosses I've tried and had no issues with (Clarins, Roen, Pat McGrath, Lisa Eldridge, Too Faced, Urban Decay), and all I could identify as being different were the vegetal oils (apricot kernel oil, rice bran extract, rosemary leaf extract, rosa canina fruit oil, raspberry seed oil).

Has anyone had experienced a similar reaction, or have any insight on this ? I don't know what to think of this problem.

Natural history of the British isles; the Dog Rose

In this series of posts we’ll be covering the natural history of the British isles, we’ll try to keep things seasonally relevant too. Our first post is about one of our most abundant and important hedgerow shrubs; the Dog Rose
