A list of puns related to "Republic Of Dagestan"
Iβm currently reading the biography of Abdullah Azzam which focuses on his efforts to recruit Arabs to join the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan. One of the passages in the book talks about the use of magazines printed in different languages to make people aware of the plight of the Afghan people. One of the languages it mentions is Russian. This made me curious about what Muslims in Chechnya or Dagestan may have thought about the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Thank you in advance.
I see that they are called federal subjects to Russia but I'm not really sure what that means. I see that there are 20 other republics within Russia. Is their ability to operate more autonomously than other areas including krais and oblasts give them the title of "Republic" and do they operate similarly to countries within the United Kingdom?

I'm looking into planning a multi month road trip similar to the Mongol rally but with enough time to actually explore the places I'm in. I want to visit Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Mongolia and to do this route I would need to cross into Russia twice, once from Azerbaijan to get to Kazakhstan and the next from Kazakhstan to get to Mongolia. I would prefer to go through Iran and then Turkmenistan but I'm not sure how realistic that is because I know getting a visa for Turkmenistan can be rather difficult, especially when you're not apart of a tour group.
I already asked on the Russian and I'm getting conflicting answers but it seems the majority are suggesting to avoid Dagestan Republic. I've been told that it's become rather dangerous even compared to Chechnya. At first I thought it was blatant racism towards the Muslims in the region but I'm also concerned whether or not they're right. I've never used wikitravel before and I have no idea how accurate it is but that site pegged Dagestan as a dangerous region in Russia.
So I'm curious to hear from others who may have experience traveling Russia, how safe is Dagestan? Also if anyone is well versed in travel throughout Russia, what are some regions best to avoid?
Edit: Or I looked up the average elevation of Saudi Arabia instead of the specific city they would be in... which is 89 feet. Whoops.
Sorreh...sorreh, everyone.
But if anyone is still interested this is Dustin training at a simulated 20000 feet elevation. So... he's prepared. Though I dunno how well those machines work as compared to actually being at a high altitude.
Edit: Or Abu Dhabi isn't even in Saudi Arabia and is in the tiny country next to it, the UAE... I knew I was racist.
A lot of fuck ups went into this post xD
I don't plan on going right now, but at some point in the next 6 months, maybe.

Well, Dagestan and all that region is known in Russia as most savage and aggressive. Peoples from there very often behave badly, while visiting other regions of Russia.
