In Greek mythology, Palaestra is the spirit or goddess of wrestling. She is the daughter of Hermes and is credited with inventing the sport to give men something to do between war. She is described as boyish and headstrong, and asks Helios to tan her so that she does not look as pale as other goddesses.
In Smite she is a close-range Warrior who uses her wrestling prowess to take down enemies her style. Palaestra is extremely strong when she's in your face, using her signature grabs and throws to bring you down. She does however lack range and most of her abilities require you to be within a certain area. Palaestra, just like her lore, is strong and hates the way that other goddesses carry themselves. She prides herself on her tall stature, muscled body, and strength to defeat others. She goes by the nickname "The Rooster" after her father's signature animal. She is constantly doused in olive oil, always reapplying it when out of battle. Her voice is somewhat deeper than other goddesses and she scoffs at the sight of someone like Aphrodite. She uses her muscled arms to swing, mimicking pankration in a way, without an attack chain.
Palaestra has been on my list for quite a while because she was quite hard to design. I had to figure out a way to make her interesting, since Greek wrestling on its own in Smite would look boring and bland. Not only that but her visual design had to match and make sense. She couldn't have flowing hair and a slim waist because that would be boring and against her lore, so I went with a muscle-headed woman who cares only for her strength and skill. As for her abilities I looked for classic Greek wrestling techniques and put a spin on them, as well as incorporated minor fantasy elements such as her auras. The theme of the rooster, her father's animal, didn't come until last minute when I decided it would be a good trait to add to her design.

... keep reading on reddit โกWhen it comes to the Latin language, I have an enormous evangelical streak and promote its use whenever and wherever. The way the language is taught is a bit of a mess, though; modern students really have no interest in how to lace up a pair of ยซcaligaeยป, what a ยซporcusยป or ยซbosยป is, or how people used to bet on their favourite ยซquadrigariusยป. Bring in modern technology, though, like the ยซbirotaยป (bicycle), a box of ยซconvolvellorum tabacorumยป (cigarettes), or a ยซcomputatorยป (I think you can figure that one out yourself), and suddenly the subject gains a lot more mass in their minds, more relevance. Quomodo fasciculum in Unix delere? and so on.
There was a magazine called ยซPalaestra Latinaยป that was, I think, written by the Catholic Church in Spain (don't quote me on this) and they had this recurring feature called Nova et Vetera. When I looked at it, I was stunned: here was perhaps my ideal pedagogical method when it comes to Latin. A presentation on every subject from the airport to the bank, from the kitchen to the bedroom, with vocab at the end. Wildly out of order, yes, and done over several decades, but you can't escape the fact that this could be a textbook. Not quite the Orberg Method, as that focusses on natural acquisition by stepwise immersion---more like the method of French Made Simple for example.
I moved the pages around, tried to make it as coherent as possible (i.e. articles on "tobacco" all together, "around the office" all together, etc). More coming soon, but for now this is it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wxr4uzQWbyyavzhgUYEbgrTzCgG2F3nq/view?usp=sharing
Made with a few custom assets for a homebrew 5e campaign. I'm spiffing up a daytime version as well; the players will have to take up a location at night, clear it out, and set up to assassinate the returning Captain-General of the city's Longmarcher Battalion, fresh from his triumph over the Great Name of the High Elf Clade.

And an addendum:
Title: Goddess of Wrestling
Pantheon: Greek
Type: Melee, Physical
Role: Warrior
Passive: Fatigue-^1 Instead of mana, Palaestra uses Stamina. She has a maximum of 100 stamina. If Palaestra uses all her stamina she becomes fatigued. Fatigue causes Palaestra to move slower and become more vulnerable to attacks. As long as Palaestra does not cast abilities, she will regenerate stamina at a rate of 5 per second. Basic attacks regenerate 2.5 stamina per hit. Additionally, mana and mp5 effects have no effect on Palaestra.
Passive ability: Debuff
Affects: Self
Movement Speed Reduction: -20
Damage taken increase: 15%
Ability 1: Bearhug-^2 Palaestra dashes forward a short distance passing through minions and stopping at the first enemy god hit, grabbing them into a bearhug dealing damage every 0.5s for 1s.
If used after Suplex, Palaestra will initiate a pin maneuver increasing the damage and silence duration to 3 seconds while reducing the damage by 50%.
Ability type: Dash

Ability 2: Suplex^3 Palaestra grabs the nearest enemy god in a cone in front of her delivering a suplex dealing damage in an area around the impact and knocking down (stunning) the target for 0.5s.
If used after Bearhug, the casting time is reduced by 50% and bonus damage is dealt.

If combined with Bearhug, Palaestra instead delivers a standing leg drop dealing increased damage and knocking down (stunning) the target for 0.5s.
If used after Suplex, the primary target takes 50% more damage and is stunned for an additional 0.5 seconds.

... keep reading on reddit โกBy any chance does anyone know of a source from which to purchase the 1912 edition of Arcadius Avellanus' "Palaestra" textbook? I've acquired a print-on-demand copy of the 1896 version. I'm told the 1912 edition is much more in-depth and fleshed out, though. Thanks. :)
I haven't included numbers due to constantly changing balance, I feel I'd do a poor job tuning. I haven't played Smite in a while, but this is an old design I had lying around on a .txt file on my computer, so I thought I'd dump it because why not.
Passive - Spar When Palaestra is fighting an opponent with no allies or other enemies nearby, she gains increased protections, as well as slightly increased damage.
1 - Back Fist Palaestra strikes the opponent with the back of her hand dealing increased basic attack damage, as well as not impairing a movement penalty to her attack. When Glistening, Palaestra performs a Spinning Back Fist instead, striking all opponents in an area around her for increased basic attack damage, and increasing her movement speed during the ability's cast time. This ability has a low cooldown and moderate mana cost.
2 - Oil Up! Looks like it's time to oil up! When Glistening, Palaestra's abilities deal increased damage and have an additional effect. As well, physical abilities and attacks deal reduced damage to her, where magical abilities and attacks deal increased damage. Palaestra smears herself from head to toe with olive oil for three seconds. While oiled up, she has increased movement speed, and leaves behind a trail of oil that enemies slip through in a straight line at increased movement speed, but unable to turn. This ability has a moderate cooldown and mana cost. Using another ability removes the oil.
3 - The Stunner! Palaestra grabs a hold of a nearby enemy, turns around, and drops them from behind over the course of 1s, inducing significant damage. If Glistening, Palaestra stuns the opponent for a brief time after the ability finishes. This ability has a long cooldown and high mana cost.
4 - Suplex Palaestra charges forward and grabs the first enemy she makes contact with, suplexing them over her head, and slowing them for a couple seconds after ending. If Glistening, Palaestra creates a path of oil as she charges, and knocks the enemy down the oil at increased speed, in a straight line.
Do your worst!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies ๐
It really does, I swear!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
