I thought I had already hiked South Kinsman twice but on my most recent trip I continued along the Kinsman Ridge Trail where I encountered that stone chair cairn for the first time which I presumed to be the actual summit. It made for a funny YouTube video but several people have since mentioned to me that the North Knob of South Kinsman is the true summit and not that chair cairn.
I'm having trouble discerning the truth so now I ask you reddit: what is the true summit of South Kinsman?
I'm a bit concerned about reports of erosion in the area coupled with the recent rescues from Kinsman Ridge due to injury. I'm not clear on where the questionable parts of the trail are located, though. Is it only the north face of Cannon that is in bad shape, or is the section over the Cannonballs also rough? I see the descent from Cannon to Lonesome Lake Trail is steep.
To avoid the sketchier stretches and stick to well-travelled trails, I was thinking of doing a loop from Lafayette Place: ascending Hi-Cannon, following Kinsman Ridge to South Kinsman, then descending Fishin' Jimmy.
