A note of warning regarding larger doses of datura, to quote the Erowid page, “The main effects of datura are delirium, extreme disorientation, and realistic hallucinations. Many users report periods of several hours in which they have no memory of what they were doing. Behavior is often irrational and accidental injury is a serious risk. Datura also causes physical effects including blurred vision/inability to focus the eyes (lasting up to several days), dryness of mouth, sedation or excitement, inhibited digestion, and an inability to perspire.”

1.) What is datura?

Datura is a plant in the Nightshade, or Solanaceae family of plants. The word Solanaceae comes from the Latin root word “Solanum” or “of the Sun”. In South America, datura is known as “Toloache” which means “a nod of respect”. The Nightshade family of plants contains highly potent medicines but they can also be deadly. Nightshades can be found on every continent except the North Pole and Antarctica, and have a long history of medicinal and spiritual use. The Nightshade family includes the common food plants eggplant and tomato, also the more intoxicating tobacco, then the more potent datura, belladonna, henbane, mandrake, etc. For more on history of datura and how it got the nickname, “Jimsonweed”, please see Footnote B below)

There are many different varieties of Datura, including Datura wrightii, Datura stramonium, Datura innoxia, and others. Each variety has the same alkaloids but in slightly different proportions. The Brugmansia family has many shared chemical with Datura with a basic difference being Datura is a  bush/ground plant whose flowers generally point upwards and Brugmansia grows as a tree with the flowers facing down.

I sat in a church scrolling through my phone.

Father Thomas had taken us to a church in Chicago, of all places. Yet another stop along our wild goose chase.

Not only did we have to find out what churches that bastard Ricci had tainted, but Father Thomas was also responsible for untainting them. Apparently, Bishop Ricci was at this church before and so here we are sanctifying this church, again.

The Catholic Church was at least happy when we happened upon any church that had not re-sanctified their grounds as per the Pope’s orders. The Pope basically figured any church not sanctifying their grounds were likely in cahoots with the “Dark Powers” that be.

There were a whole lot of excommunications getting scheduled, that was for sure. In the end, the Catholic Church was going to be a hell of a lot purer, pun intended.

Father Thomas told us, with all these churches closing, the Vatican was going full bore on trying to resolve sin. Emergency Plenary Indulgences were given out to pretty much anyone who could recite what was called a “Divine Mercy Chaplet.”

I had to be the idiot who asked, “What the Hell is that?”

Father Thomas sighed, “It’s forgiveness, without the need of confession or visitation to a church. You take your rosary,” Father Thomas explained as he lifted his rosary beads from his pocket, “You pray on your sins, while giving several prayers to yourself, and the church considers you blessed and pure once more.”

I frowned, “So what you’re saying is, while all the churches are getting purified-”

“The Pope also wants to ensure all of the flock is purified,” Father Thomas frowned, “Thus the Emergency Plenary indulgence.”

Of course, in between the Vatican's Emergency indulgence and Father Thomas poking about at key churches, Ricci was confirmed to have visited, Trish and I had helped out Saint Sofia with a… well let's call it a ‘Morbid’ task. I shouldn’t speak of it, it’s supposed to be top secret.

I’ll just say, Saint Timothy was angered after Trish had done what Saint Sofia asked of her. So we decided it best to accompany Father Thomas and spend some time out of the Guardia

The funeral director was asking us what we think Mum should wear in her casket.

Mum always loved to wear sarongs (fabric wraps that go around the torso and drape downward a bit like a long skirt would), so my uncle suggested that she wear a sarong in there.

The funeral director looked a bit confused, as did some of our family members, to which my uncle added:

"What's sarong with that?"

I started laughing like an idiot. He was proud of it too. The funeral director was rather shocked. We assured her, and our more proper relatives, that Mum would've absolutely loved the joke (which is very true).

His delivery was perfect. I'll never forget the risk he took. We sometimes recall the moment as a way help cushion the blows of the grieving process.

Retirement Balance: $0 for me; $20,500 for my husband in the state pension program for teachers. (My partner, L, has been paying into the state teachers' pension system for 5 years. For most of my 20s, I either worked at very low-paying jobs, or supported myself and others on a teacher’s salary, so no retirement for me. My current job does not have a retirement program, but one of my goals for this year is to either start a Roth IRA or get a new job with a 401k match… or maybe both?)

Savings Account Balance: $23,733 We’re moving this summer to a city closer to our families, and are saving all we can for a down payment on a dreamy spot. After we move, some amount of what’s left over will go into a retirement fund, and the rest will stay in this HYSA as our emergency fund. For us, three months of expenses, including childcare, is about $18,000.

Student Loan Debt: $80,000 for L’s undergrad and MAT. $18,000 for my undergrad and (unfinished) MAT. (My undergrad degrees were mostly covered by the Pell Grant, scholarships, and a $10,000 529 from my parents. L was a nontraditional student - didn’t start undergrad until he was 24 - so none of his was covered. Most of my debt is for a MAT program I dropped out of after one year. I was trying to find any way out of teaching at the time (it is demanding, all-consuming, and carceral at once) and thought a PhD would be my only route. When I got my current job I promptly left the program and any dreams of a PhD behind.)

Equity: $83,875 (This number is from an online equity calculator, and is for our house in a very popular neighborhood in a very popular city. Our outstanding debt on the house is $295,000. We put our whole savings down in 2019, which was $9,000 at the time.)

Once you’ve been gardening your own little patch of earth for a few years, you can stretch beyond your repertoire, and add to your basil, tomatoes, and peppers, or even harvest your own seeds for the following year.

Seed catalogs offer you a great way to expand your home garden, and you can pore over the possibilities: Rainbow chard or green? Bush or pole beans? Should you give garlic a try this year? Go for a hotter pepper? How about slender Asian eggplant, white beets, pink radishes, purple potatoes? Maybe experiment with different kinds of cucumbers, or add edible flowers to the mix.

But you know you’ve graduated to the next level of gardening when you can harvest your own seeds and plant them the following year. For example, save big, red-and-black kidney shapes from the scarlet runner beans and a medley of seeds from various squash. Nasturtiums, cilantro, marigolds, borage — collect them and then plant them once the ground thaws.

This is sustainability in one of its purest forms. You’re propagating food from your own food! You can anticipate late-August dinners of ratatouille and stir fry without having spent a penny at the farmer’s market or even on a packet of seeds.
