Cuckoos are brood parasites that lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and push out the competing eggs and chicks. Hawk-cuckoos take this to another level, displaying bright patches of skin on each wing that mimic the gapes of other baby birds - tricking the parent into giving it a bigger meal. v.redd.it/5l8xdo1l1pw71

Found a nest in my bush. Possible brood parasite? One egg is noticeably larger than the others. One day there are 4 eggs, and the next 2 are missing. I found them broken underneath the bush, yolks still inside. (Middle Tennessee, US) One more pic in comments.

The first instinct that a common cuckoo hatchling has is to MURDER any other eggs or hatchlings in the nest. It is known as a "brood parasite," and will end up being at least 3x bigger than its host parents at only 14 days old.

OUR BROOD PARASITE HAS JUMPED!

We have an Eastern bluebird nest in one of our nest boxes. When we saw the Brown-headed cowbird egg in there I was devastated. He's so much bigger than the baby blues. GOOD NEWS THIS MORNING: HE JUMPED! The two EABL babies are still 3 days or so from jumping, and mom and dad are still paying attention to them. He was in our jasmine right below the box this morning, and then managed to get back up on top of the box about 30 minutes later.

The Black-headed duck is an obligate brood parasite, meaning the female does not build a nest and instead, lays her eggs in the nests of other birds.
