This hasn't received much media coverage, but on Thursday Benzema was (once again) heard before examining magistrate, Nathalie Boutard concerning the sex-tape scandal. (Translation included in comments).

Article published: http://www.eurosport.fr/football/benzema-a-nouveau-entendu-par-la-juge-d-instruction_sto5092136/story.shtml

Prior to reading the translation, just know that this article wasn't well written (imo) due to the multiple repetitions and biases. And within the next couple of days a newer, more reliable source than eurosport should have released something about this. Take this article with a grain of salt.

Translation/tl;dr kind of thing

Once again, Karim Benzema was heard before examining magistrate, Nathalie Boutard concerning the supposed blackmail of Mathieu Valbuena, over his private video. The length of this encounter is still unknown. A Versailles prosecutor has informed us that Karim Benzema, who is involved in the blackmailing scandal of Mathieu Valbuena (which is intoxicating the french national team), was interrogated for a second time on Thursday, by the examining magistrate.

The french football federation has deemed Benzema 'as not available for selection' as long as his legal situation does not progress, with only a few months left before the european championships begin in France. At this point, Benzema's case has not progressed. Karim Benzema's lawyer, Alain Jakobowicz, did not comment.

The affair at hand concerns Benzema, Valbuena, and three other people. Benzema is accused of: "being complicit in the act of blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy" (legal translation courtesy of getfootballnewsfrance), which are both punishable by five year prison sentences.

Benzema insists that this is not a matter of money of blackmailing. On December 22nd, Benzema asked to meet up with Valbuena concerning this affair, but the judge did not allow it.

Other information from an external source According to 20hFoot (sports program in France, affiliated with french news network,itélé ), Benzema could be available for selection in around a month/a month and a half. Essentially what they're saying is that within a month/a month and half, Karim Benzema's lawyers will be expecting charges to be dropped or significant progress on the case. This (may) mean his name will be 'clean', and the comments made by the president of the fff, who said that he won't be available for a call up if he was still being prosecuted, would no longer hold . This is a BEST CASE SCENARIO, assuming everything plays out quickly.

Mjrrr huddled in her cage clutching her son.

Not that long ago, the K@sir station came under attack and from what she could tell, it was, in complete defiance of all suspension of disbelief, falling…

...and falling quickly.

Something was tearing the mighty C@gr’an apart.

How did they get past their massive fleet? This station was in orbit above their very homeworld!

The market was abandoned save for the slaves themselves, abandoned in their display cages or left shackled along a wall or at one trader’s shop or another.

Why would they leave them?

Who were they leaving them to?

A hatch opened from deeper inside the station and brightly dressed humans with strangely painted faces charged in…

She didn’t know much about them. Only that there were a few of them among the unfortunates in this market.

They seemed like a nice people, though. One even shared some food with her son even though he was clearly hungry himself.

She felt hope for the first time in a very long while. She recalled that the human that shared his food said that his people hated slavery. Maybe they were liberators?

The humans were shouting and barking in some strange guttural, sibilant, alien sounding tongue as they moved impossibly quickly across the large market, many leaping, flipping, or cartwheeling as they did so.

Groups ran over to the cages and groups of chained slaves.

They were going to be freed!

She looked over at the nice man who had shared his food who was in the same large cage with her expecting to see joy on his face…

...There was no joy…

only… Terror

Moments later, one of the humans tossed a small cube in front of their cage which flashed and surrounded them with swirling, glowing holographic walls.

As soon as they were concealed, the human approached her.

He was trembling?

“Ste’hen?” she asked. “What is...”

He touched her arm, a signal to be silent, as he brought his head close to hers.

“Mjrr...” he whispered as he pressed something into her palm.

It was sharp!

She glanced down to see a small piece of… something… ground to an edge… A weapon!

“Ste’hen, what is this?” she asked in alarm. A weapon was grounds for the most severe of punishments. Where did he even get it?

“It’s for your boy,” he said grimly.

Béchard Lane: In 2004 after following a lead about a missing persons case police would discover a house with ten bodies all killed in a suspected mass suicide. Despite that however many aspects of this case remain unsolved. Such as if it was murder or suicide and how one body remains unidentified

On August 6, 2004, 49-year-old Rajesh Dhayam abruptly went missing. Rajesh was an Administrative Assistant at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka, Mauritius. He was the father of two children with his daughter studying abroad in Australia and lived separated from his wife. He was described as a very reserved man who made no attempts at socializing with his neighbours one of them even stating that he never had a single conversation with him in the two years that he had lived in the neighbourhood.

His landlord Seewan Leelodharry also told police that he had rarely ever seen Rajesh but that he would always deliver on his payments and rent however on one of the few times that he did get to see him Rajesh told him that he was planning on going on a trip to the French island of Réunion. It's was speculated that he had possibly been planning on going on that trip with a young woman named Crithika Nundkumar with who he had been having an affair for quite some time and many residents reported seeing Crithika in the neighbourhood and Rajesh likewise often spent time at her home.

Rajesh was last seen leaving a function at the Indira Gandhi Centre in Vacoas-Phoenix and according to his brother on the day of his disappearance he was carrying a check for 350 000 Mauritian rupees which he had recently deposited from his bank accounts and had just obtained a loan for the purchase of a car. The police searched Rajesh's home and when they found a picture of Crithika Nundkumar they decided that the rumours of an affair had some degree of truth to them and decided to go to Crithika's home to see if Rajesh by any chance happened to be there.

On August 27 the police approached Crithika's home on Béchard Lane in St. Paul. When they arrived, however, the main gate was chained shut and padlocked and once the police broke the locks they approached the home and every door and entrance was locked shut and the blinds and curtains closed so no one could peek inside. Despite this, an officer managed to peer inside the house via a small window and saw what looked to be a body. The police in response broke down the front door and entered the house finding themselves in the living room.

Upon entering the home the very first thing they noticed was the body of 37-year-old Crithika Nundkumar laying on a mattress the police however were not expecting what came next. When they searched the house they discovered a further nine corpses including Rajesh Dhayam. Three of the corpses were found

Another "Games Sort of Like Nancy Drew" thread!

Hello everyone, I know this is a favorite topic of the subreddit, but I want to take another crack at a definitive thread for folks who have played all the ND games and are hoping for new and exciting games to help scratch the itch. Given that a lot of storefronts are doing their holiday sales, this is a great time to pick up some games you haven't heard of, or have been waiting to try out!

My suggestions:

L.A. NOIRE

Probably the most high-budget ND-alike in the past decade or so. L.A. Noire lets you play as a detective in a late 40s- early 50s LAPD. I need to get this out of the way first: L.A. Noire is not even sort of family friendly. You'll encounter people struggling with substance abuse, mental illness, and unspeakable violence. Naked victims of murders and sexual assaults will need to be examined on the scene. You'll also shoot your fair share of people yourself.

That aside, L.A. Noire has incredibly fun investigations, including a fun interview mechanic where you evaluate whether the people you're talking to are telling you the truth, and what you need to do to encourage, scare, or call them out to get the information you need. It IS possible to fail investigations by choosing the wrong dialog choices or missing evidence at crime scenes, but most frequently you'll get a lower score and come out with a hazier outlook on how a crime went down or why. It all adds up to feeling like you really are conducting your own investigation, and owning whatever outcome they produce. Also, while it isn't officially an open world game like Rockstar's other Grand Theft Auto series, there's a beautiful model of Los Angeles in the game for you to explore mid-case. Unless you're actively chasing someone, you can cruise around town, collect cars, or take on mini-police-officer tasks to your heart's content. The game is broken up into cases that take an hour or two to complete on average, which is nice too!

Life Is Strange

(Including, in release order, Life is Strange, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, Life Is Strange 2, Tell Me Why, and Life is Strange: True Colors)

Life Is Strange started releasing its first episodes in 2014 and immediately became a huge deal, which is great because nearly all of these games are masterpieces. Out of the games that have come out recently, these are the games that feel the most like

We do.

As she stepped out of the docking tunnel into the main hall, Gree’sha was a bit overwhelmed by the mass of people in the brightly shining spaceport. For an empathic species like she was, it took significant focus to filter out all the raw emotional energy in a room this large and full of people. Getting her mental barriers up, she took a moment to get a look at the place.

This was, far and away, the nicest port she had seen since she left her home world. When the thought crossed her mind, she was hit with a sense of loss. The nuclear exchange of the previous century had destabilized the environment so badly only thin bands of land around the poles were able to sustain agriculture. Things had gotten particularly bad since her youth, so she decided to take her daughter, Jinya, and find somewhere they could make a better life for themselves.

Her journey had taken them over six months so far, and along with the whole gamut of negative reactions to her and her species, there was a danger unique to her people. Her species, the Deroli, were considered the most desirable slave species in the galaxy. Their innate ability to detect the emotions of others, combined with their physical attributes that almost all humanoids found highly desirable, meant they were prime targets for slavers of any stripe.

Her people were not without their countermeasures, however. Most of them had learned to use their skills to manipulate others and get what they needed, or wanted, from them. Some even took it as a sign of superiority and manipulated others as they wished. The results for their victims were at best a minor loss of credit slips, sometimes complete financial or emotional ruin, and at worst both.

The actions of those that acted such ways had cast a pall over her entire species. Everywhere she went she was met with distrust, suspicion, and oftentimes anger and revulsion. At the same time, however, underneath those surface emotions, there was almost always a smoldering attraction present if the other party was intimately compatible.

With so many of her people fleeing their planet, they quickly gained a reputation as homeless wanderers if the observers were being charitable, or thieves and con artists if they weren’t. Generally, she and Jinya were viewed with suspicion and distrust. Even when people tried to be polite on the outside, she could still tell how they felt about her on the inside. That was the part that hurt the most. Over the past six months, she had been cons

Eight Thanksgiving myths | from grave robbing & glorifying capitalism to celebrating massacre

This post examines eight major Thanksgiving myths, covering these topics.

  1. The secular festival myth.
  2. The 1623 Thanksgiving myth.
  3. The free market capitalism myth.
  4. The starving Pilgrims myth.
  5. The smallpox death celebration myth.
  6. The theologically motivated Wampanoags myth.
  7. The Pequot massacre celebration myth.
  8. The cannibalism & grave robbing myth.

If you're more interested in watching a video, you can view this same content here.

The only two colonial primary sources of the event, written by Edward Winslow and William Bradford, were lost during the eighteenth century, which contributed to the historical obscurity of the event, and its lack of cultural recognition outside the New England states. I will be drawing on these two primary sources throughout this post, as well as on mainstream scholarly commentary.

The secular festival myth

One common belief is that the 1621 meal was not actually a Christian thanksgiving to God, but was actually a simple meal with which the Pilgrims thanked the local Wampanoag people for helping survive. [1] From a slightly different perspective their 2001 book The Times of Their Lives: Life, Love, and Death in Plymouth Colony, James and Patricia Deetz similarly make the claim that since the Winslow account of the 1621 meal “makes no mention of thanks”, it is “not close enough for us to see the event as the “first Thanksgiving”. [2] Instead, they characterize it as an English harvest festival, of no religious significance.

Historian Jeremy Bangs, who has specialized in the study of the Pilgrims, takes issue with this conclusion, considering it badly founded on insufficient evidence. [3] He points out that even if it was a harvest festival, such occasion were certainly not secular, and were accompanied by prayers. He notes that the Book of Common Prayer the Pilgrims would have taken them from England, actually contains a prayer specifically for a harvest thanksgiving. [4]

Additionally, Bangs observes that Winslow’s thanksgiving account “includes biblical phrases referring to texts whose completion includes thanksgiving”, which would certainly have been known by the other members of the community, and recognized as part of the meal’s fundamentally religious character. [5]

Bangs concludes by writing “We think the Pilgrims should have thanked the Indians”, before adding that it is “still inaccurate to bend the evidence to suggest that the P

The Last Vestiges of No One: A Look at the Platform Sutra

How have you been enjoying my "Milk Crate" series on the Platform Sutra so far? First, I used a Moose to point at some stuff, then in my second post I chopped some literary wood and queried whether Huineng might be an A.I.. But for my third post on the Platform Sutra—this one—I'm going to have to add some sulpher to the pure gold and carbon I've been dishing up so far.

Don't worry—it's my own fault.

And I can handle the fallout myself—I'm not complaing.

But what happened was this: in between my second Platform Sutra post and this one—I took a detour. There was some Nefarious Potential^1 lurking in the air, you see, due to the ongoing New Agers vs. Non-Assholes civil war. (We're at that point in a Gnostic New Age Takeover^2 when the Non-Assholes must all be liquidated (Because their presence—the Non-Assholes—gets some people wondering why r/zen needs New Agers at all.)

In short, I registered my literary opinion about the recent literary quality of this subreddit—and for this crime I was accused of 'gatekeeping other people's Zen'

"Well this won't do!" I thought.

"I can't let some dolled up New Age truffle—no doubt wearing their fifth or tenth painted-face username of the year—accuse me of a crime that doesn't exist! "

So I looked around for the most useful thing I could do for my Zen community at that moment: I identified a poison (practice-ly) begging for an antidote—and decided to give sitting-meditation-Self-abuse the Last Spanking It Will Ever Need.

And gosh darn it, ya know what? I think I might have pulled it off. That mighta been, I believe, the One True Spanking™️ they've been craving for all this time—like, evolutionarily speaking.^3 So now we can exhale a chuckle—and get back to studying Zen.

More interesting for the rest of us is an unintended arifact of my infernal detour: something shook loose from the [owl box] in my last post, in the form of some suprising alchemy: a new literary gew-gaw, hidden behind this symbol: ♾. I won't spoil it, but when you encounter next—Look! down f

The Monster of Florence: two men were convicted but many people, investigators included, believe that the eight double murders remain unsolved (PART 1)

The "Monster of Florence" is the name used by the Italian media to refer to the perpetrator(s) of seven double murders that took place near Florence between 1974 and 1985. In 1982 a double homicide of uncertain attribution dating back to 1968 was also connected to the Monster. In 2000 the investigation led to the conviction of two men identified as the perpetrators of four double murders. They were the nicknamed "snack companions": Mario Vanni and Giancarlo Lotti , while a third man, Pietro Pacciani (sentenced to several life sentences and subsequently acquitted on appeal), died before being subjected to a new appeal process in 1996. The investigations also focused on a possible motive of esoteric nature (which would have prompted one or more people to commission the crimes) without however highlighting any objective evidence in this investigative direction. The story had a lot of media coverage as it was the first case of serial killings in Italy recognized as such and one of the bloodiest in the country. It also had an impact on the habits of the population living in the province of Florence in the 1980s, who began to avoid secluding themselves in isolated places at night. The fact that the victims were young couples in secluded public places opened up the media debate on whether to allow kids the possibility of finding intimacy at home, thus avoiding isolated and dangerous places.

*** Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my native language. Hope that everything is understandable! This is going to be a long and confusing story.

  • Modus operandi and profile

The murders were perpetrated over 11 or 17 years, depending on the attribution of the first crime. The victims were couples killed with similar or identical modus operandi, while they were in secluded places around Florence. The killer usually struck on new moon nights, or in any case during very dark nights and on weekends or days before holidays. The killer usually assaulted the victims while they were inside thier cars. The ambushes took place in the summer, with the exception of the crime on October 22 1981. One or more sidearms were used in the murders, with the exception of the attacks in 1968 and 1983. From 1974 to 1985 the same firearm was always used. It was identified as a Beretta series 70 pistol (probably the 74 or 76 ten-shot model), 22 Long Rifle caliber: a model that had entered the market in Italy in 1959. It was loaded with Winchester ammunition marked with the letter H on t

The Monster of Florence (PART 3)
  • Hypothesis on the alleged instigators

The investigations subsequently led to hypothesize the existence of instigators of the crimes. This hypothesis is based on some statements by Giancarlo Lotti (who declared in the trial that the body parts were bought by an unknown "doctor") and on the discovery of a possible esoteric symbol, a pyramid trunk of colored granite, about fifteen centimeters long, found a few meters from the lifeless bodies of the couple killed in October 1981. However, it should be remembered that this object is often used as a doorstop in the Tuscan countryside. Other alleged evidence of a possible magical-esoteric motive occurred on the occasion of the last crime; a few days before being murdered the two victims had camped in the Calenzano area but were asked to leave by a gamekeeper, as free camping was not allowed in that area. Later the same gamekeeper found, not far from the place where the two had camped for the first time, three stone circles, two of which were open and one closed and conteined berries, burnt animal skins and wooden crosses. However, the episode of the gamekeeper was recently disputed. In fact, the presence of the couple in Calenzano didn't appear from the receipts that the couple used to keep during their travels; furthermore, all possible sightings of the French couple deserve reflection and the benefit of the doubt. This is due to the fact that the photo of the French victim that ended up in the newspapers showed the woman with very short hair, while in September '85 Nadine had long hair. Moreover, the frequentations of Pacciani and Vanni during the years of the murders fueled a stream of inquiry into possible esoteric motives and rites linked to Satanism. In particular, Pacciani and Vanni frequented a man called Salvatore Indovino, a magician and fortune teller originally from Catania. They usually spent time together at a farmhouse located in the countryside of San Casciano, where, according to many, orgies and rites connected to occultism were consumed. During the searches carried out by the State Police at Pacciani's home, at least three books were found that can be linked to black magic and Satanism. The so-called esoteric lead is also linked to the large sums of money that Pacciani came into possession during the years of the crimes, from which the idea was born that the "snack companions" acted on behalf of unknown personalities interested in deriving "fetishes" from mutilated bodies. Week 4 : Chapters 7 & 8 (Spoilers up to Ch. 8)

Yo, Scooby! Ruhhh-Ohhhh!

And this is where the poop hits the fan! 19 year old Edmond is hauled before a magistrate, Villefort, and he is "examined" (interrogated). Initially, it all goes well, Villefort is convinced that Edmond's an innocent boy caught up in a web of circumstances far beyond his comprehension. The young man is almost free to go, until Villefort asks who the fateful letter is addressed to. When Edmond says the letter was destined for Nortier, Villefort has a silent fit... it's his own Dad! Involved in a Bonapartist conspiracy!

That won't do, and nobody knows about the letter except... for that boy standing in front of him. Villefort tries to figure out what to do... he can't really execute Edmond... too public, and there needs to be a writ. But... maybe Edmond can be hustled away, incognito to some lonely prison and locked away and forgotten about...

And that's exactly what happens! The Chateau D'if is a prison on a lonely little rock, surrounded by water, like Alcatraz. It's meant for political prisoners, and Edmond is shocked to find himself on a boat headed there. And sadly, Edmond honestly believes that Villefort is his "friend" and he'll be freed quickly. But salvation doesn't come the next morning (and never will). The jailers ask if he needs something, and they let slip that there's a "mad priest" that keeps raving and offering a million francs for his own freedom. They all have a laugh.

Edmond is desperate to see the governor, and, with the impulsiveness of youth, threatens to brain his jailer with a stool, and we know how well that worked... Edmond gets sent to a dungeon in an even deeper level underground. Dun dun dun!

Well, this marks the END of Edmond Dantes' happy life. The euphoria of his visit to Mercedes in The Catalans, and the Marriage Feast... all a memory now. His life is now gonna suck... big time!

Questions:

  1. What do you think of Villefort? Do you think he could have been fair, except that he was pushed into being harsh with Bonapartists, thanks to his in-laws?
  2. What is Villefort protecting? Is he protecting his own father, so the older man doesn't get his head chopped off? Or is Villefort protecting his own reputation?
  3. Did Edmond make a mistake in trying to whack his jailer with a stool, thinking the can gain an audience with the governor that way? Should he have been quiet and cooperative, and accepted better food, exercise walks and books? Because if he keeps himself fit and improves his mind, mi

Lazy Rong Flubs Flubbing it: Daoxin's Flubber Recognizes Flubber (Transmission of the Lamp)

One winter, I was really in the pits. I ended up in a situation for awhile where I could neither come up with the cash for batteries, nor use my hands well enough to do something like replace dead batteries in a headlamp. So for a couple months I made do with nothing but a Bic lighter when walking outside.

This is not some story about hardship: it turned out that it is almost laughably easier to navigate oneself in the woods when you have no light source. Laughably easier. And it wasn't something that was difficult, or took time to learn either. You can see it very clearly and easily the very first night you decide not to use a headlamp. It is right there in front of you, you can't look away—and there is no way to not take advantage of what you see and use it... and once you have used it it is always there.

It's true. You are better off without a light at night in the winter than you are with one: instead of an illuminated 10 or 20 foot bubble which destroys your night vision—your vision now reaches hundreds of feet in every direction...moose are very easy to spotlight in the dark against white snow.

Since the bears are asleep, and the roads and paths have packed trails...you can navigate easier without a headlamp than with one.

This is how I discovered that people who use headlamps look very funny to people who do not: walking around in artificial spheres of light which blind them, and they "work hard" to maintain ($$)—which cost the Earth resources (🔋)—and which they must depend on for every step they take—and which make then less safe and open to comical probing in the dark.

"Hi Jane!"

—Tarzan

"Ahhhhh!" ::surprised in fright::

—Jane

"Well if you didn't want me to recognize you—why are you wearing a lamp on your head?"

—Tarzan

Anyway, I acquired several volumes of a translation of Transmission of the Lamp so that I can study it here and share interesting passages.

This is the first post in this Lamp series.

From the introduction of the second volume:

> In a Far Eastern civilisation more than a thousand years ago, and going back even further, lived communities of men in mountain vastnesses where the hard conditions of everyday life made for a deep familiarty with the living body of the earth and of themselves. These men were tough and gentle at the same time, dedicated to scraping off the adventitious layers of conditioning a civilisation imposes. Only much later was the way they lived crystallised by others into wo

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Nuggetsofchicken Reacts to: Court's Memorandum Opinion on the Motion for a Franks Hearing

Another unqualified legal analysis from someone who should be paying attention in class right now, but clearly has whack priorities.

Document can be found here. **CONTENT WARNING ON PAGE 10** I’m gonna analyze section by section since page-by-page is a lot and it’s a Monday.

Background

  • Information about the electronic devices that were seized. An interesting footnote saying the time delays were due to lack of manpower bc of COVID; court doesn’t find that excuse material to the argument anyway.
  • Explanation about the chain of custody of the forensic copies, duplication of forensic copies, the creation of forensic and supplemental reports, etc.
  • Footnote notes that the mix-up with finding the proper owner of the IP address was noted in the affidavit for the warrant. Court finds it an innocent mistake and not evidence of recklessness
  • Defense argument is that 1) Law enforcement use of Torrential Downpour(TD) is unreliable and creates “false positives”; 2) Since the IP address was associated with a business rather than a residence, and thus a variety of people could’ve used it, and 3) Law enforcement didn’t successful download the .zip file in the affidavit, and the portion that was downloaded was unviewable and corrupted.
  • Second, Defense argues that there was no probable cause to search the business because of the 6-month delay and made the evidence too stale to be reliable.
  • Defense also argues that the nature by which TD obtained the CSAM from his computer was akin to a GPS tracking device, which should have required a warrant. Thus the lack of a warrant justifies suppression of the evidence
  • Third (nugs note: this is why this shit took so long to rule on holy crap), Defense argues that even if the devices were seized within the timespan of the warrant, the off-site forensic “search” itself took 16 months, which means that the court-authorized seizure of devices became a warrantless search of their contents.
  • Fed Rule Crim Pro. 41(e)(2)(B) (as I understand it) allows for the actual examination of the electronic device to take place offsite after the warrant time limit for the actual seizure has elapsed. Defense challenges the Rule as unconstitutional on its face(as in, in every application it’s fundamentally messed up) or applied

The unsolved murder of Nada Cella in 1996: finally the case was reopened this year and maybe an old suspect is to blame

On the morning of May 6 1996 a 24 years old woman called Nada Cella was murdered in her office. She was working as a secretary on the second floor of a building in Marsala street in Chiavari (Italy), where the firm of the accountant "M. S." was located. Nada had worked there for 5 years; the case is still unsolved, but recently a new lead was considered again, the case was reopend and may finally be solved.

*** Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my native language. Edit: names redacted to follow the guidelines of the subreddit

  • The victim

Nada Cella was born on July 5, 1971 in Chiavari. Her family and friends describe her as a shy, introverted girl, dedicated to family and work, with few hobbies (the gym, cinema and photography). Since 1991, Nada had worked as a secretary in the firm of the accountant "M. S." and had thus achieved her own economic independence. She lived at home with her patents and her sister.

  • The murder

It is not clear at what time Nada arrived in the office because no one saw her enter the building. However, we know that at 7.51 am she turned on the computer and worked on the computer for nearly and hour, then at 8.40 am a client made the first of four phone calls to the office [more about this detail later].

The assault took place between 08:50 am and 09:10 am. There were no signs of forced entry and no traces of a fight or defensive injuries. The attack was fast, she was hit with one blow after another, without hesitation. Nada must have fainted almost immediately as the assailant continued to attack her (presumably ) even when she was on the ground. Three types of injuries were found: some of them were caused by punches and / or kicks, some other were caused by a blunt instrument (almost certainly an object with a sharp edge, but the weapon has never been found), the third type of injury was caused by a very violent impact against a flat surface, probably the floor, causing fractured cranial lesions; according to medical reports these were the most lethal injuries.

Nada, unconcious but still alive, was found by her employer "M. S." [I'll call him "S" from now on], who had arrived at the office about ten minutes late, around 09:12 am. "S" found the door of the building closed but the light in the entrance hall was on; therefore he thought that there were some clients inside, because that light (when there were no clients) always remained off. Then

LINKS - Chapter 4 - Ignite

Chapter 4 - Ignite

“I want to know who you sold Chara to, and where he took her,” Azee snapped again, slamming her hands against the bars of Luke’s cell. Her nose crinkled as her lips pulled back in a vicious snarl, the rage visible in her eyes, even in the dim light.

Luke’s eyes widened at the anger etched in every part of Azee’s form. It had been a long time since he had seen her angry, and he had never seen her even remotely close to her current state. In her now he saw the rapid, wild animals that his father had always warned him that all pelts were, just below the surface.

“Tell me, now!” Azee barked again, Luke jumping a little at her voice.

‘This doesn’t make any sense!’ Luke’s mind raced. ‘She shouldn’t be able to get this angry! She shouldn’t be able to get angry at all! Unless…’

As Azee slammed her hand into the bars again, her instincts screamed at her to stop, to back away and hide. The scars on her back, her hands and her legs burned with the memory of switches and whips used to force her into obedience. Rebellion and defiance brought only pain.

The non-human shall give no less honour to the begger, the murderer, or the traitor, to the very lowest of humanity, than they would give the most noble of their kind. From their honour to the superior race, the non-human may, someday, be worthy of what small liberties their betters see fit to grant them. To fail to punish dishonour, is to fail the natural order of the world, and to bring abomination amongst both humanity, and the non-humans. To correct them, to command them, is a kindness.

How many times had she heard that verse, barked at her and the other slaves as they stood, watching as one of their fellows was beaten for some minor slight, real or imagined. Each word was etched into her soul, she heard them even as slept.

Keep your head down, and don’t draw attention.’ Chara had told her, again and again. ‘Stay quiet, and never talk back. Humans are always right, especially when they are wrong.

So many times Chara herself had fallen under the lash, unable to follow her own advice. So many times, Azee had used a cool cloth to clean her sister’s back, speaking softly and trying to comfort Chara as she whimpered in agony, having paid the price for being unable to keep a snappy comment or defiant word to herself.

But the threat of pain didn’t mat

Red Pine's Platform Sutra: is Huineng an A.I.?

> 1. Master Hui-neng took his seat in the lecture hall of Tafan Temple to expound the teaching of Mahaprajnaparamita and to transmit the Formless Precepts. Seated below him on that occasion were more than ten thousand monks, nuns, and laypeople, along with Magistrate Wei Ch’u of Shaochou and more than thirty officials and thirty scholars. Together they asked the Master to explain the teaching of Mahaprajnaparamita.

> The magistrate then instructed the Master’s disciple Fa-hai to make a record to pass down to future generations so that students of the Way who carry on its guiding principle and who transmit it to others might have this testament as their authority.

The Platform Sutra
Red Pine

Simple question, r/zen:

Does this mean scriptural authority? As in—this document contains the teachings of Zen?

Or does it mean narrative authority?

As in—this book tells the story of the lineage of Bodhidharma and the Sixth Patriarch's southern "sudden awakening" school's origin and place—and the reason for that place—inside of the lineage of Bodhidharma?

You know, so that the monks of the school could point to it say, "This is who we are. This right here. That school!"—and use it as an authority in this manner?

Brings up an interesting question.

Why would they need to do that?

I'll let us mull that one all separately tonight—I got a date with a frog and I dunno how it'll gonna go, so I can hardly comment myself.

One reason I value the Platform Sutra is because it tells the story of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng—and I think telling the stories of the patriarchs is instrumental to the study of Zen.

Hmm. See how I had to ram all your faces onto the OED entry like that? I'm never sure how many of you can or cannot look deeper into the language tree than Webster's—and hoo knows what you could be accidently unseeing in there due to false walls.

Tap, tap.

[Psst—do you fellas get any of the Owl jokes I make? —Linseed]

That's a wood chopping thing. If I weren't a woodcutter, I wouldn't see all the way to the bottom of the dictionary as easily as I do. It took a lot of days of cutting wood—and reading and writing and looking up anything I wanted in the OED—before my eyeballs really began living in it as if they owned the place. This is just the effect of literary work, though—generally speaking—nothing special in itself. Adding woodcutting to the mix just meant I had the time necessary to do

Christianity is not inherently a "violent" religion. Its ideals are pacifism and nonviolence. Wars and violence occurred in Christian history due to social, cultural and historical circumstances.

Some people might look at Christian history and say "well, Christianity is a violent religion". That's a very simplistic way of looking at things. Christianity in terms of its teachings and beliefs is nonviolent. Lets start with the person it is centred on. Jesus Christ. This is what he had to say on the matter:

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God"(Matthew 5:9)

"You have heart that it was said 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'. But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile"(Matthew 5:38-41)

"You have heart that it was said 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy'. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love, you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect"(Matthew 5:43-48)

"Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him 'Put your sword back into its place; for all those who live by the sword will perish by the sword"(Matthew 26:51-52)

So it is very clear Christ in his teachings advocated nonviolence: How did the Early Christian community view violence? Well, here are examples from some of the Early Church Fathers:

"For from Jerusalem there went out into the world, men, twelve in number, and these illiterate, of no ability in speaking: but by the power of God they proclaimed to every race of men that they were sent by Christ to teach to all the word of God; and we who formerly used to murder one another do not only now refrain from making war upon our enemies, but also, that we may not lie nor deceive our examiners, willingly die confessing Christ."_St Justin Martyr(First Apology)

"I do not wish to be a king; I am not anxious to be rich; I decline military command... Die to the world, repudiating the madness that is in it."_Tatian(Address to the Greeks)

Nineteen-year-old NSW man charged with murdering man in Canberra's Garema Place [ABC]

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-12-05/man-charged-murder-over-canberra-garema-place-death/100675152

A 19-year-old New South Wales man has been charged with murdering a man in broad daylight in Canberra's city centre yesterday morning.

Police descended on Garema Place at 9.45am after reports of an altercation in an alleyway off City Walk.

A 29-year-old man was found collapsed on the ground and, despite the efforts of paramedics and members of the public, the victim died at the scene.

A 19-year-old, from Greenleigh, was chased down and arrested by police shortly after the alleged altercation.

He spent the night in custody, undergoing mandatory forensic procedures, and was charged with murder late yesterday.

SES volunteers spent yesterday afternoon combing the city for evidence, while forensics detectives examined the crime scene.

Overnight, the area was cordoned off to the public.

The crime scene became emotionally charged at times yesterday, with bystanders who said they knew the victim becoming visibly agitated with one another on several occasions.

People were seen hugging one another and crying near the police tape, while one man lay on the ground and said, "This is where my brother finally lay", refusing to move for officers.

Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said police had "done a great job" managing the scene.

"These are traumatic incidents. We have a person who's died at the scene here today and, you know, understandably, people are upset and emotional," he said.

"I'd also like to acknowledge that the male [who] died today was Indigenous, [and], certainly from ACT Policing's perspective, we'd like to show our sympathies to the Indigenous community."

By Sunday morning, the crime scene had been cleared. All that remained was a small bouquet of flowers placed where the man had died.

The details surrounding the alleged murder, including what sparked the altercation and how the man was killed, are still under investigation.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow, charged with one count of murder.

Three of the corpses were f
