I have been using the Duolingo app but it teaches Spanish of LatAm and not Spain. I am going to move to Madrid in another 7-8 months and would like to learn the language enough to be able to have basic conversations. Any advice, please?

I have heard some people saying that social class is a big determiner of whether Barceloneses speak Catalan or Castellano habitually. Basically, that the middle class tend towards speaking more Catalan, and the working class tend towards speaking more Castellano.
In my anecdotal experience working with young people in various parts of this city, it seems to be true. The kids in richer areas speak more Catalan amongst themselves, and the kids in poorer areas speak more Castellano amongst themselves (with exceptions, obviously, that's just been the general trend).
I was wondering how true this is, besides my own anecdotal experience. If it is true, why does it happen?
When Paul Castellano was being driven back to the police station, it came on the radio that they had arrested him and they had bugged his phones. Apparently Castellano heard this and turned to the cops and said to them "You bugged the phones in my home?"
I found it funny that he was a mass murderer, he exorted people, assaulted people, intimidated people, but drew the line at listening in on other people's phone conversations.
