Fun little holiday folk punk transformation story here. I do musical instrument repairs for a living. Just before fall this year I got a call from a young man asking me to refurbish a tenor banjo his grandfather passed down to him. He dropped it off, very quite timid 18-19 year old polo shirt and khakis.

Hi!! Started my βFIREβ journey in July with first monthly budget. I was saving 6% pretax (w/ 6% match) and spending 85-95% of my after tax income. πI have been trying really hard and Iβm now able to saw 19% pretax, and 40% after tax. Still room for improvement but I donβt feel restricted or limited at this level β just excited to support myself on less. Obviously having a high income ($120k/yr) makes this possible for me but it is very easy to live fat paycheck to fat paycheck. Especially in HCOL area, there is huge social pressure to express wealth through spending and as a young women to invest in my physical appearance.
So if anyone cares, this is my budget breakdown and these are the main changes I made to enable a higher saving rate for myself.
Budget: 60% rent 20% food/dining 5% bills 15% car, dog, shopping
Lifestyle decisions:
- I donβt spend almost any money on my appearance. I wear hand me downs from my younger sister, i dont wear makeup most days and occasionally wear a few glossier products that I usually get as gifts, I donβt dye my hair, I use shampoo and hair oil but only a few times a week.
- I rarely go out to eat, get coffee or do frivolous shopping. I cook at home. I avoid Amazon one click and take a few days to consider if I need something.
- I order hard kumbucha or beer at the bar if I go out. Mixed drinks are pricey af.
- I drive an affordable car I bought in cash ($7k + $2.5k maintenanceu so farβ¦did a lot of repairs initially to set us up for longevity but expecting maintenance to avg <$150/mo.)
- I go camping for fun! Itβs awesome and way cheaper than plane travel/hotels.
