We had the idea of measuring in what geographic places of the canal the water is the dirtiest as a result of pollution. So we would let the boat continuously measuring the "dirtiness" of the water for a big distance. Than after that we would like to explore ourselves how
I have a bit of prior experience with programming, and my classmate has some experience with the basics of building circuits.

So we would let the boat continuously measuring the "dirtiness" of the water from point A (a place out of our city) until point B (in the middle of our city). Than after that we would like to explore ourselves what could be the cause that in a certain place along the route a certain amount of dirtiness has been located by the boat sensors.
Measuring with a light sensor probably wouldn't work for this since, there are many bridges and other things that could darken some places of the canal.
Does anyone have some inspiration for us about what our boat could exactly explore or measure for this, and what sensors could be used for this? Any help would be appreciated very much.
Note: The goal of our high school project is to research something with a combination of engineering, programming, biology and mathematics.

Edit: Solved! First, I was producing way more water than needed. So, fixed that and then swapped out water treatment facilities & drainage pipes with the ECO versions from Green Cities DLC. Currently 0% water pollution, brown color is minimized to a very small area next to the shore. TY for the help. Main issue was having like 5X more water being produced than needed.
Pollution is killllllling me (well, my city)... (and well, it hasn't yet, but it's about to) It hasn't reached the pipelines/water system, and I can still move my intake stations down the lake/ocean a ways, but, this is getting ridiculous... from everything I researched, these things are supposed to make it all better, right? Will it really make the water turn back to clear though? How can I permanently solve this issue without having these dorky things in the water, surely this is not the actual solution, right? Am I using those water treatment plants correctly? Any tips would be appreciated cause this is insane lol.....
I saw there's a way to have water treatment facilities on land and then that causes ground pollution? I would much rather prefer that. How do I do that?
