Trees Lounge

I heard it closed as a casualty of COVID. Is this true and if so, will it reopen? If not, what are they doing with the space? Mahalo!

Trees Lounge (1996) written and directed by Steve Buscemi is one of the most engrossing, slice of life films I've seen in some time.

Been looking for hidden gems of the 90s as of late.

Buscemi stars as an unemployed, frustrated 30 or 40 something constantly at odds with friends, family and the patrons of his local dive bar.

The narrative is loose and the film is full of quirky characters. The film feels like it could be set in your own neighborhood. The struggles depticted with women, family and friends are all too real but done in a very subtle and swift way.

Buscemi shines as the central character in this ensemble filled with some of the top character actors and actresses of the era.

Trees Lounge

Any of you mamalukes seen Steve Buscemi's writing/directing debut "Trees Lounge?" Just watched it last night. It's a great little character movie and has quite a few Sopranos cast members popping up throughout.

From the Wiki:

>The film's black humor is based on examination of characters' self-destructive behavior, centered around their shared hangout of the titular bar and lounge. Critical reception was mostly positive. Trees Lounge has also been cited as an influence by The Sopranos creator David Chase, who later hired Buscemi to direct "Pine Barrens" and three other episodes of the show, and to star as Tony Soprano's cousin Tony Blundetto during the show's fifth season.

The same way a book can be the Great American Novel, "Trees Lounge" is the Great American Film

I watched this film a few days ago, and Jesus Christ. I was just blown away. I thought it was going to be a half-decent flick, and I gotta admit the poster kind of turned me off. Steve Buscemi sitting in the booth like that made me think it was gonna be some bottle episode-esque movie in which a bunch of quirky characters walk into a bar and Buscemi is just some smartass sitting in the corner, giving snarky comments non-stop and all that. That couldn't be further from the truth. The eponymous Trees Lounge is an important setting in the movie, but it isn't entirely where it takes place. Whatever, that doesn't really matter.

Trees Lounge deals with so many themes: sex, relationships, self-destructive behavior, and many others. It's so dense and it packs so much in such a short runtime, but it doesn't feel like a chore or as if they crammed a lot into this short movie. Trees Lounge is just so free-flowing and almost like a stream of consciousness-type movie. The characters are well-written and three-dimensional, and there was obviously a lot of care that was put into the crafting of these characters and into their performances. Everybody is perfect in this movie; I can't think of a weak link among them. Every actor fits and plays their part well, and Buscemi himself is fascinating in this movie. He's a great actor; he's given great performances in Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, The Sopranos, and many other films and shows that I haven't seen, but even so I think this is his best performance. He projects vulnerability, and doesn't so much play a character but a human - himself.

In regards to the characters of the movie, one gets the impression you're watching only a small part of their lives. I think the film's timespan is of a few days; at the very most, the film takes place over a couple of weeks. But these characters had lives, and had a lot of history, much of which is hinted at and alluded to but is (usually) never shoved in your face as clunky exposition. The way they're written and the way the movie ends, you know that they'll have a lot more shit left in their lives. At the risk of kind of giving the end of the movie away, there's no resolution in terms of their "problems." The external and physical conflicts that the characters of Trees Lounge go through aren't fixed, and if anything they get worse. Same with their psychological problems. But there is a sense of reso

Trees Lounge (1996) by that Animal Blundetto

Watched this for the first time in about 20 years last night and it had very strong Sopranos vibes to me obviously in a different way as its not about the mob but just in the tone and the dialogue and some characters it just felt kind of similar which is extremely rare to me

Cast is crazy its full of Sopranos alumni : Tony uncle Al, Marie Spatafore, Artie Bucco, Mary Deangelis, Chris Moltisanti, Danny Baldwin and also Sandy from Goodfellas, Stacks from Goodfellas and Deangelo Barksdale.

Would recommend to anyone that hasnt seen it, its on amazon prime in the uk now.

Any other films or series full of Sopranos cast that are actually any good?

Trees Lounge

Ok, so I finally was able to watch this movie. Certain aspects of it hit really close to home as I had a period of time where I pretty much was Tommy (Steve Buscemi). Ok I didn't have an ice cream truck, nor did I have an inappropriate relationship with a 17 yr old.

But so much else, yes. Taking over the "assigned" bar stool of a regular that died. I actually did that. Doing drugs in the bathroom, yep. Lost job, wife left. Yep. Yep.

The movie really does a great job of portraying the day-to-day life of a corner-bar regular.

I would suggest this is a "must see" movie for all us drunks. Grab you beverage of choice, get your head right and watch this movie.

Super awesome bonus: Cameo's from Samuel L Jackson and Christopher from Soprano's.

I made us an r/trees Virtual Smoking Lounge on Jitsi! Connect to videochat and smoke weed with other Reddit stoners.

Fellow ents, I saw a post earlier showing people coming together on video chat to smoke weed and others wanted to join in. So I figured let’s start a videochat for the subreddit and I made us a virtual room to chat and meetup!

https://meet.jit.si/r/treeslounge

I made this using Jitsi Meet. It's open source and encrypted with no account nor login needed to access. Jitsi can be used via desktop (Chrome recommended) or through Android and iOS apps. Just click on the link and you should not need to input a password or PIN.

I’ll be connected all day and ready to hang! (I’m the girl with a Bernie sign.)

Update 3/23, 2:12pm EST

It's working!

I'm gonna be here for several hours and I believe that Jitsi meeting link will be active for a while. I couldn't find info on how long until the Jitsi meeting links expire, but I was able to access a meeting I had setup over a week ago. So I think anyone can join in whenever. I hope this takes off because it'd be so cool to login and chat with other fun - and stoned - people throughout the day.

I watched Trees Lounge (1996)

I like watching movies about alcoholics.

I should have seen it coming; I highly enjoyed the show Mad Men, despite its despicable premise (total dickheads selling lies to themselves, each other, and the world), it was engaging because Don Draper was a straight fuck-up despite any power or prestige he managed to acquire.

So in Trees Lounge, Steve Buscemi is a fuck up, and that is way more realistic to my experience than looking like Jon Hamm. He has zero power, zero prestige, and zero income.

Steve Buscemi plays some stereotypical New Jersey working class middle-age never-got-his-shit-together loser and alcoholic.

And creepy uncle. Seriously, who the fuck buys a 17-year old girl getting stoned and making out with an ugly 35-year old at any point? It's like a romanticized tale of some dude creeping on a former best friend's kid.

No but seriously it's a solid movie. It has no resolution, only realization; Steve destroyed every relationship he ever had through his life only to find himself in the very place in the end that he began.

The acting is pretty on point if you compare it to other media about stereotypical working class people in New Jersey, I guess, like the Sopranos. Now that was a show about some fucked up characters. Michael Imperioli shows up in a memorable scene here; two of these guys look like Baldwin "brothers" (they're all slightly anomalous clones pm me for more info), a greasy substance abusing contracter, Samuel L Jackson trying to make off with a scene like if Stacks were an actual character instead of a murder victim.

The best part of this movie was it was pretty realistic down to the adventurous kid getting traumatized and leaving home.

I think a lot of other movies try to have some sort of resolution, but this one didn't, and it seems pretty clear that this is the kind of film that influenced Horace & Pete, another excellent story of the working class struggle and alcoholism (kind of.)

I highly recommend; it was less depressing than Drunks and way less sexy than Leaving Las Vegas.
