Hey everyone, just curious if anyone's been to the park and seen the japanese gardens. I'm recovering from heel surgery earlier this year I'm worried the hike will be too intense. The site says "it's a steep and hilly trail" but doesn't say much about distance and timeframe. Just looking for pointers or more details if you have them, thanks!
True Crime Society- Tragedy on the Taconic
I finally watched HBOβs βThereβs Something Wrong with Aunt Diane,β and I know exactly what happened to her from my personal experiences getting accidentally blackout drunk. I have battled with alcoholism my entire adult life and before admitting that I was, in fact, an alcoholic, I had SEVERAL black outs that fall very closely in line with what we know about Dianeβs actions and behavior that day.
Diane was a closet alcoholic whoβs husband worked when she was home at night and would have no idea if mommy had βspecial juiceβ with her from dinner to bedtime. Danny clearly downplayed the familyβs relationship with alcohol, as so many of the family photos feature beer bottles/ drinks and I believe Diane was drinking alone in the evenings and generally had a high tolerance for and a moderate dependence on alcohol.
Diane woke up that morning hungover from the night before, and likely spiked her coffee while packing up camp and getting the kids dressed. She threw the bottle in her purse because she could still feel the hangover trying to get to her and she didnβt have any otc painkillers on her to fight the headache.
I, without any proof whatsoever, believe she may have had a THC edible around this time because it would be hard to smoke with the kids in tow and she was really trying to get ahead of that hangover.
By the time they get to McDonaldβs (9:59) sheβs feeling nauseous and her head is starting up a dull throb, but sheβs good at this and itβs not hard to have pleasant conversation. She getβs an iced coffee hoping the caffeine will help her head and a large OJ to pour out half and top it off with vodka so she can maintain βnormalcyβ until she can get the kids home and pretend sheβs tired from the trip to recover in a dark room.
She takes the opportunity provided by the McDonaldβs play place being an easy distraction for the kids to mix her drink and (if my edible theory wonβt hold up) smoke.
By the time they get to the Sunoco (10:46) Diane has now had, at minimum, hot coffee, iced coffee with cream, orange juice, and vodka in her stomach (Iβm not sure if she ordered food for herself at McDonaldβs). This wouldnβt sit great with me on a good day, let alone a hungover, running around tow
... keep reading on reddit β‘I figured I ought to make my 1st actual review on here one of the r/bourbon picks. Seems appropriate!
This is actually my 1st bottle of Taconic, so I don't have anything fun or witty to say about it. Straight to the review we go!

Rested in GlenCairn for Ten minutes prior to 1st sip. Waited approx. 10 minutes between each subsequent taste to see how it opened up.
Nose: Vanilla, Custard, Ethanol, Butterscotch, Clove, Light Oak, Brown Sugar (It's dessert stank, packed in a bottle)
Palate (neat): Cinnamon, Clove, Vanilla, Oak, Burnt Caramel, Ethanol, somethin' cakey/pastry-esque
Finish: Fairly long, although the tail end sort of leans into that sort of numbing clove aspect more than anything

First few sips were a lot of heat, and that clovey numbing kicked in, and it was frankly hard to pull taste notes initially, but once it had sat for a while and opened up, hoooo boy! It had some serious flavor!
That dessert stank from the nose comes through in the palate, but with all of the yummy goodness you'd expect from a well produced bourbon. This one gets way more interesting as it opens, much like a good wine would.
It has a nice mid-weight mouthfeel and a rather nice finish to it. I'm excited to see what this is like further down the road.
On a scale of 1 - 5, I'd currently put this in the 3.75 range, with the potential to go higher once it has had time to open more. I am definitely going to pick up more of their products based upon this. Always love something new for the catalog!

I'll be in NY state next week and planning on visiting the Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn and Taconic in Duchess County.
Does anyone have any expereince with their whiskies? Are their tours noteworthy/worth it?
I live pretty close to both the Bear Mountain and Taconic State Parkway parts of the AT, specifically the 1777 Trail Parking Lot (former) and RPH Shelter (latter). I was reading this article, and it said that June is when most NOBO thru hikers end up making it through New York. Is that accurate?
If so, I'd love to spread some trail magic in either of those two places (I'm about equidistant from both of them). That article I posted said that people have brought Mother's Day cards & stamps for people to send out; do folks here think that's something that would go over well?
I've also stalked this subreddit, and thought of some things that thru hikers would actually find useful if I brought to hand out:
My questions to folks here:
Thanks folks!
Curious if anyone has played Taconic Golf Club in Massachusetts, and what the process is like to get a tee time as a non-member. My understanding it that it is semi-private, and they have a small number of tee times for non-members.
If you guys donβt know about Diane Schuler and the 2009 Taconic State Crash hereβs a brief synopsis
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Taconic_State_Parkway_crash
Iβve heard people dismiss this as just another drunk driver (which she definitely was ) but I think the mind blowing aspect of this was that a 36 year old cable executive and mother of 2 decided to get so drunk on a Sunday morning driving home from camping that her BAC was equal to 10 shots in a single hour and she also smoke A LOT of marijuana with that hour. This is with her 2 children and her 3 nieces in the car on a Sunday morning.
It almost seemed like something snapped emotionally that morning. While parents do get DWIs with children in the car, the extreme of intoxication and unusual circumstances is I think whatβs so mysterious to a lot of people.
I watched the HBO documentary about this case called βThereβs something about Aunt Diane.β which was fascinating but I came away feeling like nobody really knew her. She definitely seemed to have a lot of relational trauma in childhood but had a very tough and put together exterior. She married an emotionally stunted man-child who relied on her to not only be the bread winner but take him on as a 3rd child. He actually said something so horrible on camera about their only surviving child toward the end of the documentary that itβs heartbreaking.
I really think this would be a great topic because of the closet / high functioning substance abuse, childhood relational trauma, hidden pain, her husband and his behavior and how it could have possibly ended in her killing her child, 3 nieces, 4 other people and herself on a Sunday morning drive home. We see βhigh functioningβ substance abuse on this season of 90 Day FiancΓ© so I just think an in-depth analysis and discussion would be fitting.

They are gonna implode too
Hello,
I was hiking today (Rennsalaer County Plateau on Leganbauer Road) and came across a dead deer that appeared to be hunted by a Mountain Lion/Big cat. Now I know this may sound crazy, but when I Google deer hunted by a mountain lion I get images that look like what I saw. Essentially the stomach and energy-dense areas of the deer are eaten and the rest of the carcass was left. There also seemed to be some type of struggle judging by the hair in the immediate area. I don't think it was some coyotes that ate the deer because they are more scavengers by nature and I wouldn't expect as much carcass left.
I can post a picture, but I'm not sure what the rules are for graphic images on the sub-reddit. Any ideas?
Thanks
