Radiation Emission Defender Secondary

Hi all!

I usually team with 2 buddies, and none of us roll a Defender/support style hero πŸ˜‚ I've decided I'd be the first.

After reading over the primaries, I've settled on Radiation Emission. I feel it has a nice mix of supportive skills, as well as some powers that will help us take down tougher targets.

I'm a little stuck on which secondary to choose. Leaning towards either Radiation blast (Laser beams from my eyes? Cool irradiate animation? yes please) and Dark Blast (Soul Noir FTW).

Obviously, I think both look amazing! Being that this is my first defender, I'd thought I'd check in with the heroes on here and see if anyone had any recommendations! Does either synergize better with Rad Emission? Are there any quirks between the combos I should be aware of? Sample builds?

Sonic Blast is also an option. Not a huge fan of the animations, but they aren’t so bad if you do the alt hand animations.

Thanks in advance all!

[US] Does the greenhouse gas credit secondary market negate the environmental benefits of personally owning a zero-emission vehicle?

Like many of you, I've been attempting to reduce my personal carbon emissions. The first major step I took was to install a PV system on my house, and I oversized it with the expectation that I'd eventually be swapping my IC vehicle for an electric vehicle to charge at home.

My plan was to purchase a Tesla. The car is more expensive than I'd normally consider, but I was willing to bend my budget a a few thousand dollars in order to reduce my emissions. I've now got the money together and was planning to put an order in early next year (yeah, yeah, I know I'd be missing the tax credit for 2019 but it's a little too late now).

However, I came across this article explaining that Tesla sells greenhouse gas credits to other car manufacturers, giving them permission (under US federal law) to sell a gas guzzler that they would previously not have been legal for them to sell.

Digging into this, my conclusions is now that purchasing an EV (at least in the US) does not affect global carbon emissions, since industry-wide, vehicles across the board are going to on average achieve about 42 MPG (for 2019, as required by US law). You can purchase a Tesla and that just causes another F-350 to be built. You could buy an F-350, and you can rest easy knowing that your purchase price included subsidizing someone else's zero-emissions vehicle.

Given that reducing emissions was my primary motivation, I don't think I can justify purchasing a Tesla anymore. No matter what I do, the average car on US roads will burn a gallon of gasoline every 42 miles. The difference between my current car (which I actually like a lot) and a Tesla, given the additional cost, is no longer worth it without the warm feeling that I'm making a difference.

Has this occurred to anyone else?

I have a 2002 Audi TT, I went in to do emissions inspections and the mechanic told me that my car didn't pass or fail emissions. He asked me if I recently changed the battery and I told him that I did 4 months ago. He suggested I take the car to the dealership so they can do a drive cycle. If I go to to an auto shop and ask them to reset all codes, would it clear these NOT READY flags?

Catalytic Converter: Not Ready

Evaporative System: Not Ready

Oxygen Sensor: Not Ready

Secondary Air System: Not Ready

The most recent patch made secondary energy work in opposite ways on emissives and effects

Previously, secondary energy was the highlight color for both effects and emissive textures. After the patch, primary energy is the highlight on emissives, and secondary energy is still the highlight on effects.

To demonstrate, let's use purple and gold. They contrast and blend well. We want purple to be the main color, with gold highlights. Sort of a thermal vision color scale.

Here's primary purple and secondary gold: https://i.imgur.com/6PBiEsB.jpg

The lightning looks like we want, but the frame emissives look terrible. Also note that since secondary is coloring the outside of emissive patches, tiny emissive bits will only have the secondary color on them. That's backwards.

Here's primary gold and secondary purple: https://i.imgur.com/Jx2zZ9f.jpg

Now the frame's emissives look correct, like they did before. They have a nice gradient, and the tiny bits are purple. The energy effect, however, just looks weird. It's not at all what we're going for. The light created by the ability is also the wrong color.

Either way we do it, something looks bad. It needs to be consistent.

While we're at it, there are emissives that only use one energy color, like vanilla Nidus's big glowy patches and Revenant's pulsing energy under his flames. A bunch of textures lose the secondary (now primary) energy color when you leave the Appearance section of the Arsenal, including Mag's helmets, Nekros Irkalla's flames, and Octavia's mandachord. And please, attachments need secondary energy too or they'll never be able to match.

Electric Cars are Good, Actually

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

Electric Cars produce half as much C02 over their lifetimes as a traditional petrol car. This is a conservative estimate. The International Council on Clean Transportation, by contrast, predicts a 60% to 74% reduction in life-cycle emissions for EVs purchased in Europe & North America.

85% of Americans drive to work, either alone or carpooling. Compare that to:

  • 74% in France

  • 69% in the UK

  • 68% in Germany

A full 29% of American carbon emissions- more than any other single source- come from transportation. Those figures are similar or higher in Europe. Even given that not all of this comes from road traffic, reducing these emissions by 60-70% would be game-changing.

Even if the US, despite overwhelming public, corporate, and political opposition, were to jettison its car culture and reduce its car usage to European levels- which would translate to a roughly ~15 percentage point drop in car usage on daily commutes- this switch would not even begin to compare to reductions gained from electrifying road transportation.

Public transportation, bike infrastructure, and dense cities are important. But they cannot be seen as a replacement for electric vehicles. We cannot afford to treat EVs as merely "the lesser of two evils" or a secondary solution. They are a core part of our carbon reductions strategy regardless of whether you live in the US or Europe.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The Bob Lazaar element 115 "cutting angle"

Throwing this out here to see where it goes. In the Bob Lazar tapes/interviews, he goes on to describe gravity drive via element 115 functionality and even provided a sketch. He was very specific in that the element required a certain shape; and the military technical ability to machine the element properly with precision cutting tools.

Being an optical technician, I understand the nature of glass; and in particular the ability of specially cut/ shaped and polished prisms. The angle of each facet of a prism has the unique ability to bend light and disperse light waves, which split into corresponding wavelengths attributed to a very specific angle. I.e the rainbow affect exposed by the three 60-degree facets of an equilateral prism. (triangle) https://productimages.edmundoptics.com.sg/6828.jpg

Another fact of glass properties effect on light is that it actually slows down the speed of light as it passes through it.

Now, back to element 115 and the Lazar description. In one of the sketches; he drew of the "gravity drive"- Bob 's depiction of element 115 coincidently was drawn in the shape of a triangle. This was not an accident and has likely gone unnoticed and misunderstood due to lack of understanding on basic principles of materials such as glass and light.

Bob drew Multiple triangles that needed to be placed in a precise arrangement. (This is exactly how some optical systems work as well, prisms in tandem.)

In the world of optics, precise arrangement of mirrors and prisms work synergistically to produce a human controlled output wave; like in a slit experiment where the lab worker will need to split a light wave into multiple beams; diverge them to various prism to bend at very precise angles and into multiple beam expansion crystal cavities where the photons can be amplified, magnified, slowed down, and even rotated before being accepted into a resonator to produce a laser beam of precise wavelength and power. Light waves emitted by certain metals, such as those emitted by hydrogen gas have special atomic properties of emission and absorption. These are called Fraunhofer lines and can only be visually observed with a prism or reflective grating to produce dispersion of the light wave into its primary component.

Some light waves are affected by magnetism and electrical fields; I can certainly conclude that some gravity waves must also retain a similar property as lig

This is a week of continuing unfinished business.

Government bills on financing nuclear power stations and supporting businesses hit by pandemic-induced rent debt progress towards the end of their Commons journey.

Meatier stuff is happening in the Lords.

They're considering amendments to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, including disregarding convictions and cautions against gay men for former sexual offences that are now legal.

And then Friday brings private members' bills.

Nuclear Energy (Financing) Bill - report stage and 3rd reading
Approves a new financing model for building nuclear power stations whereby households pay a small amount each month to fund plants as they're being constructed. By financing nuclear projects upfront, the aim is to make them more attractive to domestic investors and reduce the UK's reliance on funding from overseas groups like the China General Nuclear Power Group.Β More information here.

2021 German Federal Election Megathread

The Election

Tomorrow (Sunday, September 26), there will be a federal election in Germany.

--

--

Electoral system

Germany uses a Mixed-Member Proportional Election System.

> Germans elect their members of parliament with two votes. One vote is for a direct candidate, who ought to receive a plurality vote in their election district. The second vote (considered as more important) is to elect a party list in each province as established by its respective party caucus. Half of the Bundestag is then filled with candidates that won their electoral districts by the first votes and the other half by candidates from the party lists according roughly to the proportion the parties receive from the second votes according to a complex mathematical formula. Common practice is that direct candidates are also placed on the electoral lists at higher rankings as a fall-back if they do not win their districts.

Taken from Wikipedia

The voting ballots look like this - First vote (local representative) on the left, secondary vote (party setup of the parliament) on the right.

--

As explained a while back in a post here on /r/europe, the distribution of vote weight in the German electoral system is extremely fair compared to other systems of voting.

--

There is a 5% threshold for making it into the parliament, hence 50% of the votes are not required for a majority. If 5% of the votes go to parties not represented in the parliament, 48% of the votes are enough to form a government as the 5% do not get seats in the parliament. If a party gets more than three direct mandates (first vote), the 5% threshold does not apply and the party will get seats according to their share of secondary votes in the parliament. If they get one or two direct mandates, they will get just these one or two seats. Any party reaching more than 0.5% in the election will receive state funding, roughly 1€ per vote.

I fucking despise crypto

> I’m more interested in a radical decentralized ubi that I think could potentially be achieved thru crypto and gaming but I haven’t ironed that idea out enough yet to explain it.

-[Grimes][cryptobi]

While Grimes has not considered how this would work, game developers have. Crypto-based games that pay players do exist. This archetype of game, known to its developers and players as "play-to-earn" is marketed by its developers as solving problems with existing online games.

Play-to-earn games start by requiring a player to connect their game account to a crypto wallet. The games deposit an in-game currency for completing tasks and challenges in game to the player's wallet. This currency is an [ERC-20][erc20] token. These tokens are transacted and accounted for on the Ethereum blockchain but do not directly convert to something a player could pay their rent with. Converting to a currency that can be used to pay rent is typically done through token swaps. The exact workings of swaps are outside the scope of this discussion save that they are sensitive to demand. For example if the overwhelming majority of players were attempting to swap their tokenized in-game currency for Ethereum, the exchange rate would fall and vice versa. Play-to-earn games also typically represent in-game assets such as playable characters and collectibles as NFTs. These NFTs are also in the player wallet.

By pushing ownership of in-game assets onto the blockchain, play-to-earn developers claim to be solving the problem of traditional games that digital assets and items aren't truly owned by players. Once purchased, traditional digital assets can never be resold, and when the game shuts down all the items are lost. Play-to-earn developers also claim traditional in-game assets are mutable, which is correct. Those items are mutable and could be modified by the game developer after purchase. By paying players with an in-game currency to their private crypto wallets, players purportedly are rewarded for playing. By representing assets as NFTs, players can buy and sell in-game items directly and keep them when the game's servers are decommissioned.

These claims are all empirically false and these games feature no technological breakthroughs. Transactability of in-game assets it not a unique or novel feature. MMOs have had secondary exchanges where players can buy gold and items for years. For example, Runescape gold and other items can be [bought][rsgold] online. Immutability an
