This is my first post so sorry for any mistakes.
Ramanujan's series for the reciprocal of pi involves several really arbitrary-looking integers: 9801, 1103, 26390, and 396. What do these numbers have to do with pi..? I can't imagine what sort of reasoning would prove this. And even more I can't imagine how someone would come up with it to begin with..?
I've heard that Ramanujan found things like this by empirical investigation..?
This is the well-known pi formula suggested by Ramanujan (1914).
I have searched for how did he came up with such non-obvious numbers.
Here, it is suggested that the numbers have something to do with
"Monster group, along with certain expressions involving Dedekind eta quotients".
What I want to ask is, was there any related formula for pi (or 1/pi) using a similar technique as Ramanujan?
Or is he just so genius that no other mathematicians before him could possibly come up with the idea?
I am not majoring in math, but I think every mathematical thought has its own background.

Okay, I see where they get the inspiration from for these pastiche of ideas modeled from real life events:
A math prodigy from a third world country immersed in a very traditional religion, being acknowledged by a professor from the "city of machines" (ahem, the industrial revolution) is clearly the story of the unlikely genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan. Godfrey Hardy would be Seldon, an Oxford professor who recognized the extraordinary genius of Ramanujan for solving problems considered impossible to solve without any formal education, as he mostly self-learned math after he was 11 yrs old as he exhausted all the math that his school could ever offer, even exhausting the knowledge that college student could teach him. Hardy invited Ramanujan to Oxford to pursue his talent in advanced math.
And he was a telepath... nah, just kidding. Except that, everything fits like a glove. But that's not all!
Oxford is obviously in England, which is the perfect parallel to Trantor, the heart of the British Empire == heart of the Galactic Empire.
i have scored 95.2% and it seems like i have a chance to get into ramanujan for applied psychology, should i go for it ? is it a reputed college under DU ?
