Mudpuppies in Saskatchewan
Hello everyone,
Completely off-topic question, but have there ever been native populations of mudpuppies (Necturus maculosus) in Saskatchewan?
I understand that their current range in Canada only extends as far west as the Portage-la-Prairie area in Manitoba, however I had a conversation with someone recently claiming to have played with them as a kid in and around the Oxbow-Carnduff area. I've just assumed that the person I was talking to probably mistook salamander larvae as being mudpuppies, but this would have been in the late 60s. Were there ever mudpuppies down south, or is my friend full of crap?

Does anyone keep 'em? Does anyone know where to get 'em? I was thinking of jumping on the salamander bandwagon and getting an axolotl, but I like the looooong bois. Plus they're in the same family as the blind olms in Europe, which are the definition of awesome.
Apparently, according to my aged herpetology instructor, mudpuppies used to be kept in large numbers for the academics, where they were used for all kinds of student experiments and even dissections. That doesn't seem to be the case any more—where did they all go? If they're supposedly that easy to keep, why aren't they pet trade staples?

Just finished this wonderful beetle puzzle from Mudpuppy. It was unexpectedly hard because of the way the colors changed dramatically sometimes. Idk how accurate it is, but it is gorgeous

Found these a while ago looking for rocks, the what I think is a fin caught my eye and I thought it might have been a fossilized butterfly or something... Lol. Then found all these other parts next to it. Not sure if it is a fish? A turtle? A mudpuppy or a very large salamander?

Mudpuppy tank, bio active, by accident. Got pond plants that came with so many micro organisms. The ecosystem in there takes care of itself. Never done a water change, just top up and spot waste clean up. Clear water and perfect parameters. 100s of micro organisms swimming around cleaning up debris.
