This film has an international cast and some spectacular locations including Istanbul. It's a crime caper, a heist movie and without Topkapi there wouldn't have been the Mission Impossible series or Soderbergh's Oceans trilogy yet this movie is almost 60 years old and the problem with action and adventure movies from many decades ago is they now feel slow and boring compared to modern cinema.

The wonderful Peter Ustinov plays small-time hustler Arthur Simon Simpson who gets in out of his depth with the planners of the heist Maximilian Schell and Melina Mercouri. A few other individuals with specific skills make up their team.

There are hi-jinks and some suspense and excitement and the heist is intricate especially for the time when this movie was produced but I think most viewers will find the film a little dull given how propulsive storytelling is in current cinema. This might make an interesting viewing if you wanted to compare modern day heist movies to what came before it but Topkapi doesn't even compare to the great Rififi (1955) and every fan of cinema needs to see Rififi at least once in their lives.

Topkapi seems too slight and lightweight to be called a classic but it's certainly a major influence on the crime/heist genre. See it if you admire Ustinov, he won an Oscar for his role here which is rather surprising as he's not outstanding given his high standards.
