What causes the bizarre phase behavior of water near -8Β°C and 200 megapascals?

If you look at this phase diagram of water from Wikipedia, it's hard not to notice this weird spot where the liquid region juts back into the solid region near a temperature of -8Β°C and 200 megapascals. If you were to hold ice at this temperature and standard atmospheric pressure, and gradually increase the pressure, it looks like it would eventually melt, and then almost immediately refreeze from the increased pressure.

I know water is unusual in that ice is less dense than liquid water, and thus ice is prone to melting from pressure (regelation). But what is so special about this particular temperature-pressure zone that causes such an unstable point?

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

QS and Lithium Metal Batteries for Grid Level Storage

u/LakersBench posed a pretty good question a few days ago asking what differences needed to be made to adapt QS batteries into the needs of a grid level storage role since EV batteries and grid storage batteries have different requirements. Grid level batteries need much higher cycle life in the order of thousands and high thermal stability. Gravimetric density isnt as important as volumetric .

QS batteries are good, but are they the right fit with tweaks for storage solutions? Originally, I disliked the idea because i thought it would take away resources from the primary goal of EVs, but after some reading and seeing the limited amount of battery players vying for such a role, as well as the TAM, it's too good of an opportunity to miss.

Now lets look at QS' current EV grade prototype cells. They cycle at room temp, 1C, 3.4ATM and up to 1000 cycles before reaching "end of life" of ~80% capacity. A 10MWH up to several GWH storage battery would need to operate at every temperature, from -20C (sorry scandinavia and siberia noone's making a battery for your -50C winters) to the summer sun heat of 30-40C, at varying levels of charge rates as 123whatrwe pointed out, but generally in the 1C-C/10 range, pressure we'll get to, and cycle life needs to be nearly an order of magnitude larger a minimum of several thousand cycles up to 10 thousand cycles, given daily or semi-daily charge and discharge (so a 20 year service life).

A pretty steep increase in a key metric, cycle life. Some research into the longer lived research cells published in nature that are made of a similar ceramic reveals that those labs managed to reach the low thousands of cycles at extremely high rates of charge. The caveat being those cells were under 200 megapascals of pressure or about 2000 ATM of pressure.

Now here's where some speculation and extrapolation comes into play for the viability of QS cells (at least from my lay view, since I'm sure the Fluence and AES experts know much better). Given their pretty stellar performance under harsh automotive conditions, several tweaks in physical conditions could be made relatively easily to adapt QS cells to a storage role. A decrease in charge rate, from 1C to even C/3 would result in a significant gain in cycle life, at least 20-30% since 1C charge rates are quite stressful on the materials. Even lower charge rates would give exponential, yet diminishing returns in cycle life; ie C/5 might g

How strong Jonathan truly is.

Tarkus is about twice the size of Jonathan in most shots where they are directly compared, but in other shots he appears a little smaller.

We are gonna go unrealistically downplay this feat into the ground, meaning what Tarkus did was actually FAR more impressive, but this is just for easy numbers and to give you an idea of how strong the guy Jonathan effortlessly overpowered with one arm while he COULDNT use hamon breathing, was.

Let's lowball his height to about 250 cm (a little over 8 ft). The average male height is 170.688 cm or 5.6 ft. The average shoulder width is 40.64 cm or about 16 in. This means that usually shoulders are 4.2 times smaller than your own height. This is yet ANOTHER lowball since Tarkus is wide and stocky. This comes to a measly 60 cm shoulder width (rounded up for easy numbers, the actual number was closer to 59.524). So let us be more accurate. Arnold Schwarzenegger is 6'2 or 187.96 cm. His shoulder span is 67.7 cm. This means stocky shoulders are only 2.776 times smaller than height. Lets use that.

So, Tarkus height= 250 cm and his shoulderspan is almost exactly 90cm (90.046). Now I said we would low ball and we are. Lets say the sandstone he broke under jonathan's feet was ONLY his side in a cylinder shape (the stone was CLEARLY MUCH LARGER than tarkus).

V=Ο€r^2h = π·45^2Β·250 β‰ˆ 1.59043Γ—10^6. So we get 1,590,000 cm^3. Sandstone weighs about 2.323 gram per cubic centimeter.

1,590,000*2.323 is about 3,693,570 grams or about 3.69 metric tons.

So tarkus lifting that rock if we take tons of liberties to downplay is only about 4 tons. Now lets correct our assertion

-The monolith of rock was about 3 times the size of tarkus

-Tarkus lifted this with one finger, tossed it with one finger and broke it with one finger meaning this feat was effortless while also holding jonathan

So lets say that tarkus was using 1% of his strength (considering he did this all with one finger while laughing and has no super powers, just raw strength)

let us continue with the tiny boulder measurement, since it really doesnt matter in the end

That means tarkus' max output of lifting strength (LOWBALLED with the puny rock) is about 400 metric tons of lifting strength (which isnt even how strength works since there are people that cant bench 200 lbs that can throw a 1 ton slab of rock using hysterical strength)

Jonathan effortlessly overpowered tarkus WITHOUT Hamon breathing with one arm.

Jonathan is BARE MINIMUM if you LOWBALLED to the point of be
