It is sad that it is BJP Government there. Center cant provide oxygen to its own state.

So, profit is a key part of capitalism, yes? I hope that's not controversial. You can increase profits by either raising revenuse or cutting costs, and sometimes you can cut costs involved in safety... this leads to some fun consequences...

Some examples:

• The Titanic (Atlantic Ocean, 1912) a large ocean liner collided with an iceberg between London and New York City. The captain ignored sea ice warnings and went too fast to get to New York early, many poorer passengers were crammed in tighter decks and the ship didn't provide enough life rafts. At least 1,490 people died.
• The Vajont Dam Disaster (Italy, 1963) "This event occurred when the company and the Italian government dismissed evidence and concealed reports describing the geological instability of Monte Toc on the southern side of the basin, and other early warning signs reported prior to the disaster. Numerous warnings, signs of danger, and negative appraisals had been disregarded, and the eventual attempt to safely control the landslide into the lake by lowering its level came when the landslide was almost imminent and was too late to prevent it." " Estimates of the dead range from 1,900 to 2,500 people, and about 350 families lost all members."
• The Sampoong Disaster (South Korea, 1995) a shopping centre collapsed, and killed 502 people. The building was very poorly designed to save costs and.... well...
• The Kaprun Disaster (Austria, 2000) a fire occurred on a cable car at a mountain ski resort, the cable car was poorly designed and lacked safety features (like smoke alarms, accessible fire extinguishers or ways to break the windows easily) and led to 155 deaths.
• The Ycuá Bolaños Disaster (Paraguay, 2004) a fire broke out in a supermarket that the owners had not properly ventilated, or installed fire sprinklers or smoke alarms. The doors were locked during the fire to prevent people stealing items, and 396 people were burned alive.
• The Rana Plaza Collapse (Bangladesh, 2013) a building holding a lot of commercial enterprises saw business owners ordered people to go to work despite massive cracks emerging in the building.

Drawing inspiration from /u/travel_ali 's other post, have you guys ever made trips to destinations that were the sites of either man-made or natural disasters? I've heard some of them have been restored and can be an extremely powerful experience.

I'm not sure I would book a whole trip around them but if they were accessible within my itinerary, I'd definitely make a trip.

2. Auschwitz in Poland
3. The killing fields in Cambodia
4. Nevada National Security Site (location for over 900 nuclear bomb tests)
5. 9/11 Memorial in New York
6. Pompeii
7. Volcano tourism (growing niche field including remote places like Nyiragongo Volcano in the Congo)
8. Tornado hunting in Kansas

Been watching Chernobyl and this occurred to me - how bad could we mess up? I guess Huntly plant could blow up, but that's just a gas fired plant. Collapse of a hydro dam? Would any major settlements be at risk in that case?

Um i remember if you cleared a section of the map from like an oil spill etc that the wildlife would return and that our native fauna and flora would populate the map. There may be a sequel or two to it.

Humans are polluting the air and water. We’re increasing co2 concentration in the atmosphere.

We’re still far more likely to be killed through natural disaster than a man made one. Asteroid, super volcano, poles flipping are all more likely to destroy the planet than man made climate change.

It’s my opinion that part of the reason people like the idea of man made climate change is it makes us feel more in control. If we stop polluting we can somehow control the future of the planet. We can’t.

Invented the hexayurt in 2002, took it to the Playa for the first time in 2003, and I've been keeping it moving ever since! I used to live in Colorado, now I'm in London. I just got back from a UN trip to Belarus. If you haven't heard of the hexayurt, it's a super easy to build, fairly cheap emergency shelter made from plywood or insulation, and widely used at Burning Man. It's those silver pods you see in many of the pictures!
