Lawrence of Arabia and Daenerys
Has anyone watched Lawrence of Arabia?
D&D had said that one of their three inspirations for the character was Lawrence (the others being Napoleon and Joan of Arc)
Having just watched the movie it is quite interesting to see all the things they (or GRRM) drew from the film.
The white savior element, the messiah complex and the bloodlust.
There is even a scene towards the end where he fully gives in to that destructive impulse and leads his troops to commit an unnecessary massacre which one of his lieutenants is shocked and upset at having to participate in.
Here is the scene.
https://youtu.be/aARaYjgm_rA
It is even shot somewhat similarly with a focus on the face and the emotions of the character.
Very interesting point of reference overall for Daenerys and how his story is told versus how her story ends up told.

I have never seen Lawrence of Arabia... should I wait for a theater screening?
I've heard plenty of support for the suggestion that I do not watch it on a home screen (60 inch) for my first viewing. Is it a film I can truly appreciate at home? I understand it was meant for the theater experience and it is recommended as such, but I'm itching to see it and possibly can't wait for it to come along.
Does anyone enjoy this film's experience at home as much as in the theater?

If there were ever a superhero film to win an Oscar, Avengers: Endgame is it. Iβm talking multiple categories. This is the grand epic of the current generation. The Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Braveheart, Return of the King, etc. of our time. If the 60s had modern technology, they would use it.

A movish: Lawrence of Arabia
I went to a Fathom events screening of Lawrence of Arabia yesterday. Itβs been on my movie to-do list for years and Iβm really glad my first viewing was on a big screen. My concerns that it would feel like homework vanished after that first shot of the desert sun on the horizon. It was a very enjoyable afternoon at the theater and not the kind of thing Iβd have thought to do before becoming a Blank Check fan.
After seeing it Iβve been reading articles/reviews and pretty much anything I noticed has already been documented by countless writers and critics, but there are two small things I havenβt seen mentioned Iβm compelled to share:
- Peter O Toole as Lawrence really looks like Chris Pine.
- The main theme is incredibly similar to John Williamsβ Star Wars theme. I believe the theme uses the Bhairav scale - but whatever it is - if itβs changed to a major scale itβs pretty much the Star Wars theme.

TIL Peter O'Toole found his camel saddle uncomfortable while filming Lawrence of Arabia, so he put a piece of foam rubber under it. The filmβs Bedouin extras saw this and copied it, and today the practice has spread to become Bedouin tradition. They call OβToole βFather of the Spongeβ.

"Nothing is Written" - Lawrence of Arabia as the Sacred Text of the Saga & TRoS
https://i.redd.it/owwnh4rgd2f31.gif
Just got notice that Turner Classic Movies' Big Screen Classic event September will be screening David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. While it's old hat at this point how much Lean's films, especially LoA influenced George Lucas in making both the OT and the PT, it's still worth considering what role its playing in the ST. I definitely noticed two referenced shots in the Jakku chapter of TFA for the shots of Rey agrees to let BB-8 return home with her (x) and then when post-crash, Finn crosses the desert to Niima Outpost using Poe's jacket for protection from the sun (x). However with the promised return to a desert planet setting in TRoS and official shoot photos from the very same location David Lean shot in, the Wadi Rum wilderness in Jordan, my suspicion is that we will see the finale of the Saga pay homage to one of the movies which inspired both it and its creative team. Kathleen Kennedy cites David Lean as one of her inspirations as a film student and she's spent the bulk of her career working with another LoA fan, Steven Spielberg. Who also cites it as an inspiration for his film career and who was involved with the 70mm restoration (if you ever have a chance to see that cut, highly recommended, I saw the Austin Film Society's presentation at the Paramount Theater). And then there's George Lucas' who not only used Lean's work as an influence in the OT, but who references it in AoTC for place names like Varykino*,* tried (and failed spectacularly) to evoke the romance between Zhivago and Lara, and even went so far as to shoot one scene in the Plaza de Espana in Seville.
Skip ahead to the promotional materials we've had so far for TRoS, the teaser trailer panel at SWCC and the Vanity Fair cover story. During the first part of the panel (after the audience literally had to sit through Stephen Colbert deliver a lay homily), when it's JJ and Kathleen Kennedy on stage, what's the first thing JJ mentions? How special it was to film in Wadi Dumm, same locat

Iβve been rewatching the show for the first time since it came out, and I noticed that the opening scene of S3E4 is done in the same exact fashion of Lawrence of Arabiaβs opening credits.
Iβm not sure if this is common knowledge but I thought that it was really cool that they paid tribute to the classic movie.
Hereβs LoAβs opening scene if you havenβt seen it.

Got a chance to see Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm today, first time ever watching it.
Been meaning to watch it for some time, and when I saw the nearby Hollywood Theater in Portland was showing it, I jumped on the chance.
What an awesome experience and movie. Complete with the opening overture, Organ music during the pre-movie ads, and everything.
Not to mention the movie is still incredibly solid. I usually find that some of the big classics just don't quite pack the same punch today, because everything that was so new and original about them has been done to death. But while I could definitely see the influences Lawrence had, it's such an incredible story, with breathtaking visuals.

Every workday at 1:12PM I think, "OK only 1 more Lawrence of Arabia until I get to go home..." What movies do you know the runtime by memory?
Lawrence and Arabia is 3 hours and 48 minutes long.
I was just wondering if there was any movie you had the runtime memorized for, and what the story might be behind it.
For some reason, it is always oddly encouraging to know I am only one Lawrence of Arabia away from the end of the day of work. LOL.
