ISO licensed contractor familiar with HDLC

I live in a historic shotgun and need a structure built in my back yard, this includes extending the plumbing and electricity. I've had a lot of frustration with people not showing up or calling me back so I though I'd try to post here. All work will require a OneStop application and HDLC approval.

Accidentally installed too tall of a fence in HDLC zone

First let me start off by saying that yes, I am an idiot. I had a wood privacy fence installed in my yard, which is located in the upper 9th/st claude neighborhood, in an area that belongs to the bywater HDLC.

Now here is where I'm an idiot. I submitted to a request to build an 8' high fence. I got approval, but I must have read it very quickly because what I didn't realize is that they only actually permitted me for a 7' fence. So now I have a lovely 8' fence put up and I'm wondering what I should do. It looks like I'm supposed to have a "follow-up" inspection once the project is done.

I figure my options are:

  1. Remove the flat cap, cut off the top 12" of the fence, cry, and add the flat cap back on
  2. Leave it as it is, and just don't do the followup inspection. hope that with all the ransomware + coronavirus craziness they just don't notice. Since I'm on the lake-side of St Claude, I don't think people patrol as much but that could be a bad assumption.
  3. Do the followup, and hope that the person can't really tell the difference between a 7ft and 8ft fence (i'm not sure if they actually measure it, or look at it from the street. If it's the latter, the fence is a good 50ish ft from the sidewalk). If I do get caught, I'm not sure what will happen - will they fine me? Will they make me do option #1? This is something I'm trying to figure out.

If anyone has advice, this dummy would appreciate it.

*Now, the whole reason I assumed I could install an 8ft fence is because I have a neighbor who is in the zone that has a 10' fence that just got installed about 1 year ago. Also, the HDLC doesn't actually specify a height (when I called to ask for some information, the HDLC person actually had to do some searching and call me back because they had trouble finding it), it's in the CZO list.

Can Packet Tracer be used to look at raw HDLC frames?

I'm working on a project Cisco HDLC and trying to better understand how it operates. I'd like to be able to look at representative raw HDLC frames from a Cisco router and compare to my understanding of the ISO/IEC 13239:2002 HDLC specification. I understand that the Cisco proprietary HDLC implementation deviates from the ISO HDLC specification and I think that inspecting some raw Cisco HDLC frames may help me gain a better appreciation for how it deviates as well as cementing my understanding of the spec with real data. A s someone with no experience with Packet Tracer, is this something that's doable with the software?

I live in a historic district and need a shed. I want to just buy a resin one from home depot. I know in some places those resin type sheds are considered "portable" and so they don't have the same jurisdiction. The HDLC person on the phone wasn't too helpful, they told me to apply for permits...but that seems silly to pay for that if if they will just deny it.

Has anyone here had experience with this? If so, I would greatly appreciate advice.

Alternatively...has anyone had experience with fines? I've been told by several people to just put it up and if they notice/dispute then just pay the fine.

I can't understand this sentence in my curriculum: >The address field contains the HDLC address of the secondary station. This address can contain a specific address, a group address, or a broadcast address. A primary address is either a communication source or a destination, which eliminates the need to include the address of the primary.

Since hdlc is used in point-to-point links why does it can be either a group address or a broadcast address I mean it shouldn't have a broadcast address since is a point-to-point link no?

As far as WANs go, am I correct in saying that leased lined use HDLC and EoMPLS uses just regular layer 2 Ethernet packets?

Sorry if I am wording this weird but I want to make sure I understand this correctly. Leased lines are just a point to point connection, so it uses HDLC, which is layer 1 and it encapsulates the data slightly different than layer 2 does. EoMPLS is more layer 2 and encapsulates the data just as it would in a layer 2 LAN device.

[Seeking study help] Serial connections: Frame relays, PPP/HDLC etc

TL;DR: Need to know what chapter covers Serial connections and talks about the different types and how they work etc. List of chapter topics below.

I'm studying for the ICND1 and using CBT nuggets (videos only). The videos are good in that it's a very direct approach to preparing for the actual exam, but is lacking in the details I'm sort of curious about.

I'm also taking a networking course at my local college and using Data Communications and Networking 5th Edition by Forouzan. The information goes fairly deep for an intro to the subject and provides most if not all the info I'm wanting to read about.

I've opened every chapter (32 of them) and read the first page to see where it might talk about serial connections but I didn't see it. I thought transmission media might but it, but I searched the PDF for 'serial' and came up with nothing. Here is a list of the topics of each chapter. Could you help me identify the chapter(s) I need to read? Also for those experienced with the CCNA cert path, which topics should I pay the most attention to and really build my foundational knowledge on?

  • Introduction
  • Network Models
  • Physical Layer
  • Digital Transmission
  • Analog Transmission
  • Bandwidth Utilization
  • Transmission Media
  • Switching
  • Data-Link Layer
  • Error Detection and Correction
  • Data Link Control
  • Media Access Control
  • Wired LANs: Ethernet
  • Other Wired Networks
  • Wireless LANs
  • Other Wireless Networks
  • Connection Devices and Virtual LANs
  • Network Layer
  • Network-Layer Protocols
  • Unicast Routing
  • Multicast Routing
  • Next Generation IP
  • Transport Layer
  • Transport-Layer Protocols
  • Application Layer
  • Standard Client-Server Protocols
  • Network Management
  • Multimedia
  • Peer-to-Peer Paradigm
  • Quality of Service
  • Cryptography and Network Security
  • Internet Security.

UPDATE: Just searched every chapter for "serial" and only got results in Digital Transmissions where it talks about transmission modes. I'm going to be reading this, but through my quick reading of the paragraphs dealing with serial mode I didn't see any mention of PPP/HDLC or frame relay etc.

Ethernet, HDLC, LAN & WAN Question

Quick question...

I've just started reading ICND1 100-101 official cert guide and am on chapter 3.

I don't know if this is answered later on in the book, but going over WAN technologies versus LAN technologies, I can't help but wonder.

Why not just use Ethernet frames for layer 2 transport? Why create a whole new protocol, such as HDLC or PPP?

Is it because of the nature of WANs, and how there are many physical connections, in between source and destination?

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

EDIT: I kept reading!

It looks like (at least according to the book) that the reason why Ethernet in the past hasn't been used as a WAN technology was the physical limitation of Ethernet cabling (length restrictions).

Since the advent of 1000BASE-LX ethernet has become a viable Layer 2 protocol for WANs.

Thanks anyway, /r/CCNA!

Curious if you could use a ISR (2800/3800 Series) router with a HWIC-2SER cards to convert HDLC synchronous to asynchronous and vice versa. Currently have working connections from one HDLC Sync serial to another. The challenge is a manufacturer has created a new product that only dumps out async, but, in theory, should be compatable protocol wise with the sync data. A Company called DCB makes a box which allows the conversion of ASYNC to SYNC, however, I feel like this could all be accomplished within the Cisco's currently in use.

Why configure PPP/HDLC on routers using OSPF

Possibly very stupid question ahead

Here is the topology.

In the CCNA Exploration [4.0] WAN lab guide, in one exercise, it has us building a network with 4 routers using OSPF routing protocol. THEN it has us configuring PPP on R1-R2 and HDLC on R2-ISP. My question is why are we configuring PPP/HDLC on these routers when OSPF will take care of connectivity and security? I guess I am looking for real world examples to help me conceptualize this.

Keep in mind I am studying on my own, so I apologize if this is a very basic question.

I would like to automate it at least low level HDLC (CRC calculation and framing). My question is: is there serial port terminal which can "talk" in HDLC?

I was under the assumption that HDLC was an alternative WAN encapsulation protocol and could be used instead of PPP, and vice versa? Both are considered "point to point protocols" according to the book, I'm just curious as to how HDLC can be a component of PPP itself.
