I went to FNM at my local shop last week. I got there early and watched two of my friends playing a game just to pass the time.
A guy I didn't know came over and stood next to me and started to watch them play as well. A couple minutes after he first walked up he turns to me and says "Are you just here to be a good luck charm or to to actually play Magic?"
I froze. Part of me wanted to go off on the guy and part of me felt sad for him. I took a deep breath and looked right at him and said "Yeah, I'm here to actually play Magic". He lets off a little laugh and walks away.
I wanted to go after him but that wouldn't solve anything. I was so mad at that moment I knew I wouldn't be able to talk to him normally and rationally so I did nothing.
I know I am stating the obvious here but this is not okay and I know a lot of you know that.
I wanted to write about it because over the past year and change that I have been playing I have encountered a few not so nice people.
I refuse to let a few jerks push me away from a game that I enjoy (most of the time).
But we really need to talk about this because things have to change. When I first started playing Magic I was VERY lucky to find an amazing group of guys to take me in and teach me the ropes. If it weren't for them I would have given up because of how so many other people treated me.
I have been to larger events where people have refused to greet me or even acknowledge me and only speaking to me when they are announcing a trigger or something that focused them to speak.
As soon as the game is over they can't get away from that table fast enough.
I have seen people stare at me, even take pictures (PLT, turn the flash off BEFORE you do that, it gives you away).
and I have seen the other end of the spectrum as well. I had a guy last year sit down, grab my hand from a crossed the table and tell me how pretty I was.
I have had guys tell me they can't believe my Husband lets me come to these things without him because I'm too pretty to be left alone.
I really, really don't want to turn in to that person that calls the judge over for shit like that. I want EVERYONE to be welcome at events because I think the more people that play, the better that is for us as a whole. Because of things like this you push away so many new people because Magic is known as a guys game and when girls do try to play we don't always get a warm welcome.

Hello everyone - just got traded. Can’t get into specifics but I cover NHL games for work and to this point the Sens are 7-2-2 when I watch them, including last nights win.
This was the team I was secretly hoping to join.
Love the 67’s as well since a slew of the Devils prospects are 67’s. Hoping to get up there for a playoff game.
Anyways, I’ve really enjoyed watching the Sens this year and I think DJ is doing a great job.
