Very interesting take by David Stove on Darwinism and altruism

β€œAltruism was, from the very start, a problem for the Darwinian theory of evolution, if not something worse than a problem. As a result, Darwinians have always been under a certain temptation to "cut the knot," and deny the very existence of altruism.”

....

β€œNew religionists, such as Williams, Dawkins, and Wilson, regard people and all other organisms as the helpless puppets, tools, or vehicles, of hidden purposive agents of more than human power and intelligence, whose only goal is to produce the largest possible number of their replicas in the next generation of organisms.”

Chargers 2022 Offseason Preview - Offense

The Chargers are entering the 2022 offseason with a wealth of resources: $70 million in cap space and eleven projected draft picks. We also only have thirty-three players under contract. This is lining up to be an extremely active period with a lot of moving parts, and below I have outlined the current situation of each position group on the offensive side of the ball for reference before the stove gets cooking. The offense is relatively intact, with few starters to manage and mostly backups to consider. Drop your thoughts, predictions, and wishes in the comments!

Quarterback

Under Contract: Justin Herbert, Easton Stick

Free Agents: Chase Daniel

Outlook: Justin Herbert is entering the third year of his rookie contract and is not yet eligible for a contract extension. The questions at this position begin behind him. We don’t really know what this coaching staff thinks about Easton Stick after one season, and he has been inactive for almost every game. Was he just kept as a COVID insurance policy? Does he have a chance to be a long-term backup to Herbert? Is he ready to be a backup now? It’s very hard to say, and next year is the last on Stick’s rookie contract. If he is ready, great! If not, I don’t see any reason to keep him on the roster (small COVID caveat here I guess). Cutting him would save almost $1M. Chase Daniel is an interesting case, too. He was brought in for his familiarity with Lombardi’s offense to help Herbert get up to speed and it seems to have been a big help. But do we need a second season of that? Another mystery. I don’t have much faith in him to keep the ship afloat if Herbert were to miss a game or two, which is what you need from a backup in a Super Bowl-hopeful season. Maybe it makes sense to keep him again as QB3 for that mentor role, but QB2 should either be Stick or someone not currently on the roster.

Possible Targets: Mitch Trubisky, Teddy Bridgewater, Jacoby Brissett

Runningback

Under Contract: Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, Larry Rountree, Gabe Nabers

Free Agents: Justin Jackson

Outlook: Austin Ekeler is under contract through the 2023 season. A contract restructure is possible and would save us $2.5M against the cap. Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree are both on their rookie contracts and cutting either would save around $700k. I do not expect both of them to make the roster next season as neither has done much with the opportunities given this year, and they’ve both spent games inactive. Most

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

A Breakdown of Jenelle's Thanksgiving Feast YouTube Video

Happy Sunday, y'all! I hope me doing this doesn't offend our sub's resident recap queen u/buritters. My boyfriend's mom and niece stayed with us this weekend and just left, so my plan for the rest of the day is to veg out on my couch next to my snoozing collie baby. I saw Jenelle had posted a new video and figured I had more than an enough ample time to take one for the team and do a summary. This is going to be pretty detailed because the video is painfully thorough with each step, and I don't want to short change y'all on any potential snarking material. Let's dig in!

Jenelle says everyone is always BEGGUN for her and UBT to make cooking videos. I've never even seen her garbage bag, ass kissing stans in her TikTok comments ask for swamp kitchen tutorials, but ok. She says it's 8am and they're getting started.

Menu de la Moneyhole starts with a 25lb turkey that David is going to grill. Cut to Jenelle saying that this year, they have Jace, Kaiser and Ensley. She says Maryssa is at her mom's and should be back on the land by the time their food is ready, around 5 or 6 she's guessing (although Maryssa is not in the video at the end when they're eating.) David is chopping up some herbs with a butcher knife and nearly takes his thumb off (the one on his hand, I mean). Jenelle gets started on the mac and cheese. This bitch pours half the box of uncooked pasta into a pot of water she just turned on, before stopping and realizing "oh wait I shoulda waited right... til it boils". She rolls her eyes at herself. Literally the first (and easiest) step of the day for her, she fucks it up. "I told David I have so many recipes in my head that I don't even know what to do first." You know what makes me feel like that? Adderall.

I'll be honest here, guys, I know nothing about how people typically prepare a turkey as far as seasoning and all of that goes, so I'm just going to describe what David's doing and y'all can discuss in the comments. Cut to David mixing some "seasoned, flavored butter". Jenelle says it smells like Christmas trees. David then explains he's working his fingers in between the skin and the meat to loosen it up so he can put butter under the skin. Y'all, this is SO gross to watch him do, that turkey should press sexual assault charges. He then massages the butter under the skin to make it even on the meat. Finally, he squirts globs of mayo all over the top of the turkey and spreads it evenly with his bare hands.

Back to the mac and cheese. Jenelle w

β€œThere’s a new fiesta in the making as we speak. It’s out at the Moontower. Full kegs, everybody’s going to be thereβ€”you ought to go.”

--David Wooderson

Hello again to all my fellow degenerate gamblers riding this cresting late-stage capitalist wave for both fun and profit! Many of us had a grand old time at the big $GME hootenanny (box social?) earlier this year. And some of us with a high tolerance for something or other are still hanging around that party smoking joints and talking with a bunch of primates about all the spooky shit on the back of the U.S. dollar. Ryan Cohen still shitposting sometimes-indecipherable muckety muck....it’s been fun. We get older, $GME stays the same age.

But there’s a new fiesta in the making. With some familiar faces in the mix again. And in case you weren’t yet convinced that this is all part of some weird simulation (and with apologies to our man DFV), the gods of the obvious have deemed this new play: Big Fucking Valueβ€”or $BGFV for short.

Now, before CNBC gets its panties in a bunch about those dastardly Reddit deviants colluding again with their mean internet words to hurt the widdle fee fees of the rich and obtuse, let’s be clear that even though many of the old GME gang seems to be in this thing (Hi again Rod!), it’s only because we each very much enjoy spotting asymmetric opportunities created by dumbassesβ€”and, most importantly: We Like The Stock. As for me personally, I came to this BGFV party to do two things: drink some beer and kick some short seller’s ass. And I’m about all out of beer.

Wut BGFV

So let’s get right to it: what the fuck even is BGFV? Well, you insufferable coastal elite, Big 5 is a pretty straight-forward sporting goods chain headquartered in that little California hamlet where Q-tip once left his wallet. Their sporting goods stores are often found in the kind of place you might stumble upon if you’d ever put down that avocado toast and your vanilla latte and deign to visit Real Americaβ„’. You know, to pick up a Real American baseball. Or maybe a camping stove. Or most definitely an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle. Which you might later open carry on the steps of a capitol statehouse like a fucking badass Because Second Amendment That’s Why.

Point is: Big 5 of El Segundo, First of its Name, is a

When Uriren reached the comms room, he moved to the golden mirror and, with a simple wave of his hand, signaled to his inferiors to start the connection. Taking the time to center his ears and straighten his posture, Uriren waited for the communication mirror to finish its job.

Matching the gesture of Uriren, Erjor said "High Elder Uriren, I called to discuss the situation with Grand Elder Beifir and Elder's Assistant Laelayne's performance in the last briefing meeting."

"Very well, Grand Elder. I'll start with an update on Grand Elder Beifir and the actions my inferiors have taken to mitigate his potential to disrupt the menninir situation. I've sent one of my agenteers to alert Grand Elders Hallr and Gudridr to the movement of Grand Elder Beifir's forces. I was given a 21st Century history book. Now I'm living in the creepiness of 2071. (Part 2)

Part 1

For an hour, I thought I was free. Then I heard their voices. They came back for me. After I posted the first account, Mr. Danley and Arilyn ran down the stairs to look for me. I walked towards them, knowing hiding wasn't going to work. I knew I was likely going back to 2071 no matter what.

"There you are," Arilyn said.

"I don't want to get killed," I said.

"You won't be killed. Just please... don't use unauthorized equipment without approval," Mr. Danley said.

"Trust us. We'll keep you safe. You can look at the interesting stuff on the internet while you are there," Arilyn said.

They were trained in this field, so it was possible for them to keep me safe. I thought time travel would be cooler than this though. I went back to get the watch, then I handed it to them.

"Good thing you set the return time forward by one second. Otherwise a couple unstable black holes would've opened up," Arilyn said.

I didn't know that could happen. The idea itself sounded terrifying. Yeah… I shouldn't have just taken the watch. Arilyn set a time. The bright white portal opened up, then it turned into blackness. We each walked into it.

The surroundings changed back to the polished and repainted 2071 surroundings. We were back in 2071. They said I'd be safe. Since they were trained, I trusted them. I didn't hear any creatures clawing at the window or the door, which was relieving, but I knew they could be back at any second.

I followed Arilyn and Mr. Danley upstairs. I looked out the front window for a bit, observing the street to see if there were any Purlaws. It was too dark to see anything outside, however. Luckily, I didn't hear anything outside, which was promising.

Mr. Danley stayed for ten minutes before leaving. I heard his quick footsteps to his car. As his car started, the growling came back. As he drove away, the chilling sounds of all those claws running down the road followed him. They stopped seconds later. They couldn't catch up to a car, which was good to find out.

Arilyn showed me around the house. I'd be lying if I said I didn't recognize the place. It was the house I used to live at, at one point. Now there's a wall TV, a built-in wifi modem, a small heater, and a nice painting of New York City dated to 2055. At this point, I wanted to document everything in my notes, so I began here.

I was curious about the Purlaws. I asked Aril

Planning and Executing a Home Invasion Kidnapping

This will be another long post full of quotes. I tried to trim down a little, but I didn't want to cut out anything potentially relevant.

While reading Elizabeth Smart's My Story, recounting her kidnapping and confinement at the hands of Brian David Mitchell and his accomplice Wanda Barzee, a few things stuck out.

Not only was she taken from her room by a home invader, but she lived to tell the tale of how it was done, where and how she first made contact with her kidnapper, and his method for preparing and executing a similar kidnapping.

First contact with her abductor:

>November 2001
>
>We had just walked out of the ZCMI store in downtown Salt Lake City... There weren’t a lot of pedestriansβ€”winter was coming onβ€”so the beggar was hard to ignore, standing among the well-dressed crowd.
>
>He didn’t seem to notice as we walked by. I was on my mother’s right, my little sister on her left, holding my mother’s hand. We had been shopping, and I carried a couple of little bags. I was a teenager, but just barely, with blond hair and blue eyes...
>
>Standing by the beggar, waiting to cross the street, I looked and made eye contact with him; my brothers had already seen him and had come back to ask my mom if we had any work for him.
>
>Mom glanced at him warily, not wanting to stare. I don’t remember a lot about him, but I do recall that he was clean-cut and well groomed. No beard. No robes. No singing or talking about prophets or visions or being the Chosen One. All of that would come later. For now, he appeared to be nothing more than a normal guy who had hit a rough patch in his life. He certainly didn’t seem to be dangerous or threatening.
>
>β€œI thought he was a man down on his luck,” my mom would later testify. β€œHe just lost his job, looked young enough that maybe he had a family, people he was responsible for.”
>
>So she walked toward him, five dollars in her hand.
>
>I held back, my hair blowing in the autumn wind.
>
>He glanced in my direction, seeming to take me in from the corner of his eye. I gave him a quick smile. I felt sorry for him and was happy when my mother handed him the money.
>
>**What I didn’t knowβ€”but would later learnβ€”was that he had been watching me very carefully as we walked toward him. He had taken the opportunity to study me further as my mother searched through her purse. He remembered everything about me: the clothes that

[SSB-verse] - No Separate Peace - Chapter 20

As always, thanks to BlueFishCake.

The Wiki is now the place to find past chapters. Part 1 has been substantially rewritten.

Part 3: Crumb

Chapter 20: Reunion

Sophie picked up the black pistol. A lot of people thought a .38 snub nose revolver was a little old lady’s gun, but she knew better. A Smith and Wesson 642 airweight has an unpleasant kick, especially in hands that were starting to go arthritic. She much preferred the ballast provided by a full-sized Beretta, and the option of a single-action trigger pull helped. Isaac had disappeared; he wouldn’t willingly spend more time in the ice house than he had to. The cold that she was doing her best to ignore weighed heavy on the old man. He had important matters to attend in any case. James was already down the length of the main cavern, and Sophie followed him carefully. He wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do what really needed to be done, but she was, and she didn’t want him to know about it. As she had hoped, he went in after the Shil. That left Alice to her.

James had worked for Isaac for a time and knew the ins and outs of the ice house. Sophie, on the other hand, was surprised when the meat locker was empty except for an armed guard and hanging carcasses. She was more surprised to see that it was Noah sitting vigil, bundled up in blankets and a .22 rifle across his lap. He jumped up when she came in, holding the rifle at port arms, finger safely off the trigger.

β€œBoy, what the hell are you doing here?” Sophie’s voice was softer than her words would suggest. She walked down the aisle between rows of dressed deer and moose, until she and the young man were eye to eye.

β€œF-Father says I’m old enough to work, so here I am.” He spoke with all the bravado a teenager could summon, faced by the embodiment of his fear. Sophie just nodded, and patted him on the shoulder.

β€œWell, if Isaac says you’re ready to carry a gun, it’s not my place to argue.” She pointedly didn’t comment on the bolt-action pea-shooter that had probably last seen action at a Boy Scout camp’s rifle range. It seemed to give the kid some confidence, and that was good enough for her given the circumstances. β€œI need to talk to that woman, will you take me to her?”

The cold soaked into Alice’s bones. She was starting to think she had made a mistake, traveling so far from her base of power and laying her soul bare to a man she
