This is a question concerning carp behavior. I live and fish in the southeastern United States. When the air temperatures get into the 90s, the carp start leaping out of the water and splashing back down. What causes them to do this? Has anyone else seen carp do this or are the ones I fish for just weird?
Fishing area description: The body of water that I fish is a spillway from a large lake so the water is almost always flowing though rate varies as to the lake level. There's shade along the edges until midday when the entire spillway is in the sun. Other species here are catfish, paddlefish, buffalo, drum, and bream. And one large, lazy alligator.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
