Richard Nixon seems smarmy due to Watergate. But he also made "courageous" decisions that would have caused a lot of backlash among his supporters, in international relations, civil rights, and the environment. Were these decisions as courageous as they seem in hindsight?

Here are a handful of things Nixon pursued that strike me as likely to cause a backlash among his supporters:

  • Proposed the Family Assistance Plan, guaranteeing an income to American families.
  • Established the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Administered the desegregation of Southern schools.
  • Signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT), the first comprehensive and detailed nuclear weapons limitation pact between the two superpowers.
  • Opened diplomatic relations with China after 20 years of animosity.
  • Beginning the process of winding down the Vietnam War
  • Set aside a percentage of federal construction jobs for minorities.
  • Proposed legislation that creating the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

I realize that some of these issues were not as polarized as they are today, but it seems like every one must have been unpopular among a considerable portion of voters and politicians. They strike me as fairly courageous moves. In reality, did they cause a large amount of backlash?

Since this sub doesn't have a lot of discussion on IR theory, thought I'd try to spark some.

For the unfamiliar, here's the wiki page on polarity in IR: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarity_(international_relations)

In your view, what system of polarity is the most stable? Unipolarity, bipolarity or multipolarity?

Questions about Cyprus's International Relations

Hi everybody.

I'm a graduate student in an international affairs program in Washington DC, and this past semester in one of my classes we had an international crisis simulation centering on the Aegean dispute between Turkey and Greece, and actions by Turkey in Varosha and incursions into Cyprus's EEZ.

In the simulation, some students were members of the UNSC, others were American cabinet officials, and then others were representatives from the countries in question. I got to be the Foreign Minister of Cyprus, which was a great role to have, and for about a month I had the opportunity to learn about the region, Cyprus, and its unique relations with all the major powers.

My background is on China/U.S.-China relations, but I'm actually considering doing a thesis on Cyprus from this point of view because I think it's so fascinating. There are still a lot of questions I have about Cyprus and its international relations though, and after looking at this subreddit and seeing that there are a number of people here who like to talk politics and give their opinion about this, I was wondering if people would be willing to help me understand a few things better.

My questions are:

-Military-build up: Is it in Cyprus's interest to develop militarily? In 2019, Congress ended its arms embargo on Cyprus to support the energy/security alliance of Greece-Cyprus-Israel-U.S.. I assume that Cyprus would want arms to protect itself from Turkey, but it would be seen/portrayed as provocative by Turkey/Turkish Cypriots. So does the current government want this?

-UN peacekeeping force: How much does Cyprus and its people want the peacekeeping force to leave? It its continued presence on the island in Cyprus's interest, or does Cyprus see it in some ways as impeding an end to the island's division? Or would Cyprus rather it be expanded, say, to include Varosha?

-Relations with the UNSC: If I understand it correctly, while the UNSC is often divided over most issues, every member is on the same page when it comes to the "Cyprus Question" -- but not enough to actually do implement or enforce its resolutions against Turkey. Which one would be most supportive of Cyprus? Russia, the UK? And which one would be least supportive? The U.S., China?

-Relations with China: So relations with China, I understand, go back to the early Cold War when Cyprus was one of the earliest members of the non-aligned movement, and Makarios even visited China and met with Mao and Deng a few mon

What were the international relations between Nehekhara and the other Races at the time? Why didn't more try and intervene when Nagash started trying to end all life, and what were the other races thoughts after the nation was cursed to become undead?

Remembering back I sorta realize a lot of the history of Nehekhara doesn't really mention many of the other races, which makes some amount of sense, there really wasn't any other nation of men at the time that could even rival Nehekhara though I find it odd we don't get more insights as to how they got along with, or what the other races thought of the first civiization of mankind. I understand at this time travel was more difficult but Nehekara existed for thousands of years and Settra alone conquered a sizable chunk of the planet, it would sure to draw some attention to themselves.

As for what they think after I mean... the whole Nagash business would've have to have raised a few eyebrows. Maybe the Skaven were the only ones immediately on had that could give aid to stopping him but I'd imagine it might spook the other races just the same even if they are narcissists like the elves. Like we might look down at monkeys but if an ape someone figured out to make a nuke we'd be pretty shook.

Unis for history and international relations

So I've applied to history and history and international relations but have yet to decide a fifth uni. So far I've applied for Exeter, Birmingham, Bristol and Loughborough.

For my fifth uni, I think I'd prefer to apply for history and international relations over history, and it seems like not many unis actually do the course.

My predicted grades are AAB, and it seems the ones that I could realistically apply for other than Loughborough and Exeter are LSE, at Andrews and Edinburgh. However I don't really want to go to Scotland and I also don't wanna stay in London, plus LSE is very demanding from what I've heard.

People have suggested Leeds too, but I don't think they do history and international relations either. It seems most do politics and international relations which I'd prefer not to do.

I only started looking for a fifth one recently and tbh I don't think I'm looking as hard as I could, so I decided to just ask here.

Any idea what I should apply for? I'd prefer a Russel group uni for the moment, but ones such as SOAS are still open to me as I know nothing about them.

Apologies if I've been unhelpful is describing what I want, this is sorta a last ditch effort/cba anymore thing. Still, I'd like some advice. Thanks!

MSc Theory and History of International Relations - REPOSTED

Hello All!

I applied to this program at the beginning of January. I'm an American student, and I changed my major to history and economics after studying engineering for two years. My overall GPA is a 3.6 because of this, but the courses most relevant to my chosen MSc (history/political science, I have not gotten less than an A- in any history/polisci course) I have very good grades in. I explained this in a letter on my application, but does LSE take this into account? I also have several internships/research experience, really good letters of rec, and a decent PS that explains why I want to do this program at LSE specifically. LSE is my absolute top choice, so I wanted to know my chances since my anxiety is through the roof. Any and all help is welcome!

Literature vs International Relations?

I'm at the point where I have to choose which subject to get rid of for my degree, and right now the choice is between IR and English Lit. This would be a joint with Philosophy. I don't really know what I want to do yet, so I'm wondering what you guys think the best approach would be? I would enjoy English and Philosophy much more, but I feel like IR might be slightly more employable? I'm at St Andrews so I think (or perhaps hope) any degree should carry some kind of weight.

I've been meeting with the careers guidance people and right now I've narrowed my potential paths down to politics/civil service or academia. I'm taking steps to prepare for both right now. What do you guys think? Would it be easier to go into politics without IR, or academic humanities (likely Philosophy) without English?

Ngl I'm a little all over the place right now so any advice would be appreciated lol

International Relations Degree in Europe

Hi everybody! I’m 19 years old from the United States (Missouri).I’m near getting my associates and expect to have it by spring 2022. So I was wondering if you guys wanted to hear my situation and let me know which european university you think I should go to . I want to get a bachelors in international relations and follow that up immediately with a masters from a graduate school. With this major it’s imperative to study a language and as of now Im geared towards three French, Arabic, and Turkish. I feel Arabic is most useful in the modern world so since most schools will let me study only one language (from what I’ve heard I don’t now if this is true), its mandatory for my career goals the university given offers Arabic courses, but Turkish courses are a big plus like the ones offered at Sciences Po. I don’t know how widespread the language is being taught. Many universities require a regional focus and mine is on the middle East. As for the location of the university I’m nearly 100% sure that my goals would be best suited to Europe. Tuition fees are extremely low and some colleges even offer completely free tuition like in Germany. One example I know off the top of my head is the free university of Berlin which I’m considering applying to along with the aforementioned sciences po which isn’t free but is relatively cheap. I’m also willingly to completely immerse myself in the culture and take advantage of the fact the I could easily get internships to the Middle East due to europe being so close and the issue with refugees. I also wouldn’t mind getting a job based in Europe due to the fact I would love to live there someday and even become a citizen of the nation if I find a dedicated career. I would love to be a foreign service officer but I know that’s not something everybody gets the chance to do so I wouldn’t mind if I was simply working internationally. Some colleges I’ve looked at so far are Bogazigi which is a Turkish uni, Kadir Has (Tur), the ones mentioned earlier, John Cabot (Italy), Uni of Warsaw, London School of Economics, American uni of Paris, and the American uni of Rome as well. Some of these are a little too expensive but could be done with extensive loans. Tuition truly shouldn’t cost more than 27,000 or so a year. I loved the university of Warsaw’s tuition. If anybody knows any other suggestions or has any things to add then let me know. I have a 3.6 gpa and a 24 act score with 0 studying, I speak English and basic French and am see

International Relations Article

So, this semester at my college I'm taking a course on Intro to International Relations, and one of the first assignments I've been assigned is to find an article from a "reputable source" (including but not necessarily limited to the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal) that somehow relates to the class and I have to give a small presentation (about 5 minutes) during class time on a day of my choosing (I signed up for this Tuesday) about the article itself, how it relates to the class, and a discussion question for the class to close it off. I just need help finding an article from a source along the lines of those listed, and it has to be from within the past week (no earlier than the 18th). I'll continue to do my own searching for an article, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wrote this text in my admissions exam for the masters in international relations but I’m getting self conscious today and would like some feedback from people that know more than me.

Donald Tusk1, the former Prime Minister of Poland and President of the European People’s Party between 2014 and 2019, describes the West as a unique political civilization as if an institution we all agreed to be part of when we decided to be a democracy, to be founded by the same value system and the same principles of liberty, equality, popular sovereignty, separation of powers, checks and balances and individual rights. 2 At least it felt this way after defeating the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, witnessing the fall of the Soviet Union, and after 1951 with the sinning of the Paris Treaty that created the European Coal and Steel Community. There was a permanent shift within international relations and these events became landmarks for the creation of international law based on supranationalism and economic growth. It felt as though we were walking the same path to a β€œnew world order”.

This term has been uttered several times throughout international political history, since the end of the First World War concerning Woodrow Wilson’s vision for the β€œLeague of Nations” until now with constant power shifts and new alliances. It means entering a new period of history that brings dramatic changes to the world political order, international relations, and of course, world economics.

It’s clear now that this order didn’t last and we are now faced with a completely different world, but once again this catchphrase resurfaces in the speech of China’s communist leader, Xi Jinping, in Boao Forum for Asia on April 2021, where he called for a new world order. So the question is, is this order rising?

In 2019 the European Union described China as a β€œsystemic rival” – this was and remains a sharp change in the perception of the China-European relationship. It essentially means the European Union considers China a rival in terms of ideas and norms, capable of dividing the countries within this alliance.

Seen as a rival the European Union began to take action. In may 2021 the European Commission announced plans to reduce the dependence on China in strategic economic areas. The same month, the European Parliament froze the ratification of the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment in a joint action with the US, UK, and Canada, the EU imposed sanctions on four

Chinese officials who were believed to be linked to the Uyghur genocide. This led to immediate Chinese counter-sanctions on 4 EU entities and 10 EU officials, 5 of whom are members of the European

Golarion International Relations Diagram v0.1

First off, here are the links:

I started making this in the morning, and now it's dark out. So, I'm calling it a day after posting this here.

Basically, I woke up this morning and felt like researching the nations that the players in my new campaign picked for their backstories. I have a passing familiarity with the world of Golarion, but I wanted a diagram to help me keep track of it all as I reviewed. To my surprise, I wasn't able to find one, so I started making my own. What you have here is as far as I got.

I decided early on that I didn't want to pull from my fuzzy recollection of all the nations and NGOs in the Pathfinder campaign setting. Instead, I'm only adding entities to the diagram when I see an explicit, specific description of the relationship in one of the official books. So, I spent the day going through the Guide to Absalom, Cheliax: The Infernal Empire, Osirion: Legacy of Pharoahs, Druma: Profit and Prophecy, and so on. I didn't read them cover-to-cover. A few of them had sections that specifically described some relations, which was super helpful. Unfortunately, most of them didn't have sections like that, so I searched for keywords like "relations" and the names of countries that I'd expect to come up. That worked decently well, but as anyone who really knows the lore will realize quickly, there are far more omissions in my diagram than inclusions. But I think I got all the biggest players on the international stage.

I'm happy to keep developing the diagram. I'd love for this to be a community project, but here's the deal: don't just say that I should add or change a relationship! Please cite the Paizo source you're pulling from so I can verify! (And if you want to be especially awesome, then provide a page number. Thanks!)

Anyway, I hope some of you find this to be a useful resource. Have a great day!

Edit: Already found a minor issue that bugged me (Aspis Consortium β€” Andoran should probably be orange), so I fixed it. [Here's the Google Drive folder where I'm keeping everything](https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VzR1UL9vMGV-lhOwAu8wRRAxNMUy9-X9&authuser=squarebottle%40gmail.com

Help with where to apply for Masters in International Relations/Security Studies

Hey everyone,

I'm a junior at a top 25 school right now starting to look at grad schools. The process seems overwhelming but I wanted to see if people think I should aim lower. I'm aiming for Georgetown, American, GWU, Tufts, UChicago, and Johns Hopkins. So all the ones that I probably won't get into lmfaoo. Also if anyone has advice for the GRE please tell me.

GPA: I'll probably graduate with around a 3.65. Kinda low for top programs.

GRE: Haven't taken yet, but will take a practice one soon

Work experience: By the time I graduate, I would have interned at a foreign policy think tank, well-known national security magazine, a Senate Committee, and the State Department. I've also held multiple fellowships.

Recommendations: I think I can get some good ones from people in the industry

Languages: fluent in French

Publications: I've published about foreign policy/national security more than a dozen times in pretty well-known places (I think this is something that stands me out)

Other stuff: Hmm I'm an African immigrant lol. I'll definitely play this up

I'm really sorry if there is a constant flow of posts like these I'm just trying to find some starting point.

Careers in technology that also deal with international relations?

I know that careers in IT can be very broad and right now I am studying cyber security and want to pursue a career in that, but also have been finding that im interested in careers that work with other countries and organizations across the world like international affairs. Are there any jobs in the cyber security sector that offer things like that? Like working with other countries and would make travel a lot?
