A list of puns related to "Kenneth Waltz"
The other day I (67M) came home, looking forward to a nice evening rereading Hans Morgenthau's Politics Among Nations and maybe watching some of the latest news and blaming the latest violence in the Congo and the South China Sea on individuals' desire for power and their control of states. This would all happen before eating dinner while arguing with cringe tankie class system theorists on Reddit before going to bed.
However, as I sat down with my Morgenthau book, my wife (14M) walked into the living room looking very unhappy. She said that ever since I started my subscription to the Foreign Affairs journal I had been performing poorly in bed, and that "reading Morgenthau must've fucked with my libido"
Now, I've tried to explain to this woman that human nature and how individuals respond to their interests as a result of human nature is central to the behavior of states and their pursuit of power, and that my interests have shifted to Hans Morgenthau's excellent work and criticizing modern believers in liberalism and class system commie garbage and therefore our household as a state must shift away from sexually driven policy towards that which maximizes the destruction of false ideologies. However, she is completely uninterested, failing even to understand Morgenthau's statement that "man is a political animal by nature [and therefore seeks political power over sex]", and instead constantly begs me to stop studying classical realism and join her in bed.
Anyways, at this point I recognize that to ensure our household as a state can move forward in pursuing its true interests, I have to subdue the current domestic conflict resulting from my wife's sexual desires. To accomplish this, I consult Morgenthau's work and conclude that my human nature drives me to mercilessly beat her with a belt to expand my power and pursue my interests, forcing her to retreat into our bedroom while crying and lock the door.
I leave her alone to go watch PBS Newshour, but about 30 minutes later I hear loud sounds from the bedroom. I break down the door and find Kenneth Waltz railing my wife. He turns and stares at me without stopping. I can see quick glimpses of his enormous member and it is far bigger than mine, my wife is loving it. I stand in the corner and whimper, because nothing in classical realist literature, not Morgenthau, not Kennan, not Machiavelli, not even Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War (all of which I have jacked off to many times), could pre

That philosophy is very similar to political theorist Kenneth Waltz who believes in nuclear proliferation because of the threat of mutual assured destruction. Thoughts as to whether this was intentional? If so, is that widely known?
While Waltz is a realist, I think some of the developments he made in the field of IR had an effect beyond the realm of just realism and gave all schools including liberalism a good framework for viewing world affairs.
Specifically his book Man, the State, and War gave a powerful lens through which one can analyze world affairs through three perspectives.
The Individual: Basically looking at how different leaders may have an impact on their country's actions. This could involve personality traits (like Trump being... erratic) or ideology (like Modi's hindu nationalism)
The State: This could involve a wide array of domestic forces. For instance the dairy lobby in Canada may push Canada to enact more protectionist measures in areas of trade that may impact them. Or a strong anti-war movement at home could cause a state to suspend military operations earlier than planned.
The International System: As a realist, Waltz believes this is the most important lens to view things (though he certainly doesn't believe it's the only one that's important). Essentially looking at the international system is looking which states have regional hegemony and how many poles the world operates around. Whether it's the more multipolar system that preceded WW2 or the bipolar system of the cold war.
While not a liberal himself, I think Waltz contributions to IR as a whole impact all of IR to such an extent that even the competing school of liberalism can credit him for pushing all of IR greater to the forefront of academia and giving liberals many well thought out perspectives that helped challenge and improve their school. I think IR scholars need more representation on our flair list, and Waltz is one of the most important of the 20th century.

INTRO:
Loved pretty much everything I've seen of this game so far but there's one major sticking point I cannot ignore for the sort of game Victoria 3 purports to be, And that is its the Power system.
I think the influence of Prestige on the Power system is far too much in this current iteration. as evidenced by the "Prestigious Pope" Playthrough AAR.
WHAT IS A GREAT POWER?
"You'll know when one invades you"
Kenneth Waltz, the founder of the neorealist theory of international relations, uses a set of five criteria to determine great power: population and territory; resource endowment; economic capability; political stability and competence; and military strength
Waltz, Kenneth N. (1993). "The Emerging Structure of International Politics"
There are however some practical limitations to this.
While all these factors play a role, they ultimately boil down to how nations can leverage physical authority in the geopolitical arena. Practically Speaking this is done primarily as a function of two things: Military Strength and Economic Power
At its core, all 5 criteria listed above practically resolve themselves into these two (From the role of Resources in the economy to the Population Fit for service)
ISSUES WITH PRESTIGE: superpower by art and not might
The Rank system as described from Dev Diary 18 is determined solely on the basis of Prestige which itself is an aggregate factor influenced by various sub-factors. Read the DD for more info to refresh your memory.

On the surface, it appears the idea is sound but the balancing is just off, but rather I feel it is more than that actually.
I think its entire approach to power ranking is indeed fundamentally flawed as it takes little to account for many factors that do indeed determine the power of a geopolitical entity.
ANOTHER WAY:
Here's my suggestion on the subject
I think Power Rankings should be determined by the two traditional Geopolitical Metrics, Mostly a mixture of Economic Strength (Domestic + Weighted Subjects) and Military Power (Domestic + Weighted Subjets): Both Army and Navy with Navy giving extra Points and Prestige (more on that in a bit)
Now, Other things would still go into calculating national power:
Population

... keep reading on reddit β‘Hi, my friend is a very successful artist who's interested in taking time off to do an MA in IR out of sheer interest. I advised her to consider picking up some literature first before taking the decision to dive in. She seems to be interested in PR, Diplomacy & NGOs as far as I can tell.
I recommended her some works by Terry Eagleton but only because he happens to be my own favorite writer.
I wanted to reach out here to ask if you had any literature recommendations for someone thinking of entering the field of study, or even if you would like to share a piece of IR work (book or article) that absolutely blew your mind to this day.
Do your worst!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
