Introduction
This is part 3 of my series of chronicling rap music of 1981, 1991, 2001 and 2011. Part 1, about 1981 and 1991, can be found here. Part 2, about 2001, here. I’ve noticed some confusion about why I’m doing this, so here’s a short breakdown about me:
- I’ve started a journey to listen to pretty much all relevant rap music in the history of the genre in 10 years’ time. In 2020 I didn’t keep meticulous notes, in 2021 I did.
- I’ve picked 10-year intervals to keep things interesting for myself.
- I’ve been listening to a lot of different rap for around 20 years now and I’m very familiar with pretty much all major releases through rap history.
- My job allows me to listen to music for large parts of the days, and I often don’t stop when I’m done with work.
- I like writing about rap and my aim is to help people find new music they might not yet know.
- Besides rap from the years mentioned above, I’m also listening to whichever albums I want to listen to at any given time, around 150 different albums in 2021.
- I’ve listened to 259 rap albums and a grand total of 4354 rap songs from 2011.
- 1 song per artist on the list. Some artists could’ve easily had multiple entries on the list, but it would make for a terribly boring list.
2011 Songs of the year
The list of great rap songs is very long. Probably longer than any of the previous decades. There simple were more good rappers from very diverse backgrounds making great music at the same time: both mainstream and underground, from all regions. I’ll provide breakdown by aesthetics, because otherwise the list will become very unwieldy.
Brick Squad
Following Waka Flocka Flame’s classic 2010 Flockaveli, Brick Squad kept shitting out 20+ song mixtape after mixtape in 2011. Save for Waka Flocka & Slim Dunkin’s “Twin Towers 2”, most of those tapes were at best just pretty decent. It’s notable that practically every artist on Brick Squad was able to release a great song as a solo artist in this blessed year:

So we're (potentially) moving in a hurry to a place that I didn't realize was in Lincoln Park. The unit itself is really nice, but I'm suddenly a little bit freaked. I've heard horrible things about the area. I'm not a San Diego native (moved here 3 years ago). I did look up things like crime rates and such but that pretty much only scared me more...
I'm a very nervous sort of person so I really just want to know... Is Lincoln Park really all that bad? Like really? I'm not talking about socioeconomic status. I myself am poor as dirt. I'm talking about crime and other scary stuff. I like taking walks sometimes and I really don't want to be worried about getting killed or mugged. I am aware that I sound a tad dramatic, but I grew up in a mountain town, not a big city.
Are we going to be okay here or should we hold out for another place? Help, reddit. Google is freaking me out.
EDIT: Thank you to those of you who were reassuring. I talked to several people who were familiar with the specific area that we're moving to and they all assured me we would be fine. I am not street smart, no, because I grew up sheltered af, but I'm learning, and I'm surrounded by people who grew up in big cities.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
