Benefits of living in North Yorkshire
Do English have regional loyalty? Like, does someone from Liverpool identify with being from the North West? Is someone from Sheffield proud to be from Yorkshire and the Humber? Or are these culturally meaningless boundaries?
As an American, our State lines mean a lot since we have a Federal system where States have a lot of autonomy. In the U.K., there is no Federalism as the U.K. is a unitary state. But there are still nine official regional divisions from my reading:
- East of England
- East Midlands
- London
- North East
- North West
- South East
- South West
- West Midlands
- Yorkshire and the Humber
So I'm curious whether these nine regions are seen as, more or less, statistical regions without a strong cultural following, or whether someone from England would identify with them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_England
Like, do people from Brighton and Oxford really identify strongly with each other because they're both from the "South East"? Do people from Cornwall and the Cotswolds identify with each other because both are labeled as "South West" on the map?
