Myomectomy recovery

I have a myomectomy scheduled for Tuesday, to remove one 1cmx2cm adenomyoma. I had a 8w miscarriage about a month ago, after an IVF embryo transfer. My MRI showed no diffuse adenomyosis or endo, and I am completely asymptomatic. We’ve decided to remove the myoma to remove that variable before another embryo transfer, and to hopefully decrease the chance of another miscarriage.

My clinical coordinator won’t meet with me until the morning of surgery to talk over the procedure itself (my doctor has some, so I do know what I’m getting into). I’m interested in information on recovery: were you placed on a special diet for any amount of time? Recommended to take any meds (I’m thinking of stool softeners, for instance)? How long until you felt ok to do desk work? Drive a car?

Thanks in advance!

Myomectomy and being over weight

Hello!

I'm scheduled to have an abdominal myomectomy at the end of March to remove several uterine fibroids; four of which are the size of baseballs.

I'm a little concerned because I'm considerably overweight. Over the past few years, I've gained enough to have an overhang belly. My crease is just about where my insicion spot will be. I'm afraid of pull and irritation because of the overhang.

Has anyone experienced this? I heard that sometimes the surgeon can take away the excess skin/fat in that area during surgery, so it heals relatively smooth, but alot of me feels like that's too good to be true.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hysteroscopic myomectomy recovery?

I hope it’s ok to post this here, it seems like the community most likely ti have advice…

I’m having a hysterscopic myomectomy soon and am wondering if anyone has any advice on what to expect, especially for recovery. I’d really any tips on things to have on hand to make things easier or any advice like that top if you have any.

I keep getting pretty vague answers from the doctors just saying that it’s a very quick recovery with a chance of some bleeding/pain afterwards, and would love any more specific experiences to round that out.

I’m just happy to finally see wtf is going on in there. Endo is mostly confirmed through imaging (cyst characteristics are consistent with an endometrioma).

I’m a little nervous, since I’ve never had surgery.

Any tips for what to bring with me or have prepared at home? Going shopping this weekend.

Preparing for myomectomy

Hi all. I found this thread in hopes of getting some advice and maybe helping my anxiety. I have been battling with major bleeding and cramps during my period for years. I was always told it's due to being overweight but was never able to lose weight. I even went keto for a year.

In October I saw a new OB and he immediately searched for fibroids. He said I had at least a 10 cm fibroid and sent me for further testing. It is located on the top of my uterus and is pinched closed. After further testing it was determined I will have to have a myomectomy in March.

What do I need to take with me? What should I expect before, during and after surgery and recovery?

Nervous to test (4yrs ttc, myomectomy, chemical mc)

After a chemical mc, I'm nervous to test. I am 11dpo and having lots of symptoms, but don't want my hopes dashed again. I am def feeling jaded and nervous and I suppose that's a common series of emotions for a situation like this.

My husband doesn't want me to test until I've missed my period. That's only another week, but I have a few FR tests that I could take rn but I'm nervous. About what exactly, I don't know. Last time (it was the 1st time I had ever been pregnant and we have been trying for 4 yrs... had a myomectomy in May so we got pregnant on the first try!) I was testing every day and it stopped getting darker and found out it was chemical. Last time I obsessed over it with such joy and excitement and its like I don't want to be vulnerable to those feelings this time around.

Anyone else out there farther along? How long did you wait to test? How did you handle this very early time?

Thanks in advance, and love and health to each of you.

For those you had myomectomy, how was your 1st period after surgery?

Was it more painful? Did it come on time? More blood than usual?

Update: period came on time. Unfortunately a lot more painful and heavy. Before surgery, my period was only heavy for 1 day and no cramps. Now after surgery, bad cramps to the point I have to bend forward to walk and very heavy flow and blood clots for 2 days so far. I was hoping the surgery to help with the heavy flow and now it's worse.

Myomectomy worth it? Anyone do it despite no endo/fibroid symptoms?

Hey all, for some background, I'm 33, I've been trying for a year, and haven't gotten pregnant once. I've been checked out via a HSG and 3 ultrasounds this year, and with the first two ultrasounds, the technician and RE #1 said I have fibroids, but they were not terribly concerned. I had my third ultrasound with another RE today, and he was the first to be more concerned about my fibroids. RE #2 was concerned about a fibroid that is within the uterine muscle (submucosal I believe), and suspected this could be a problem with implantation. He was also strongly convinced that I have a left ovary issue (possibly hydrosalpinx), that could be holding fluid and preventing implantation.

RE#2 is definitely more thorough than RE#1, which is great, and he is literally the first person all year to have showed real concern on something after hearing "everything looks good" on all my tests this year. He gave me the option of having a hysteroscopy (to check out fibroid), laparoscopy (to explore and fix issue with left ovary) and hysteroscopy, or myomectomy (to remove fibroids, especially the submucosal one, along with fix the left ovary issue). He said he was leaning towards the robotic myomectomy to clean everything up in one go, but without any procedure to go in and check, he cannot be sure just how much the submucosal fibroid is causing implantation issues.

A myomectomy is definitely major surgery, so I am very concerned about it. I've done research and several women have said it improved their quality of life as they had heavy bleeding during periods or terrible cramps often, so it was worth the pain of surgery recovery. However, if I never got checked out, I wouldn't even have known I had fibroids. I have very regular periods with moderate/light bleeding and no abdominal pain. I was wondering if anybody was in a similar position and still went for the myomectomy and felt it was worth it or not worth it.

Multiples after myomectomy?

Hi all,

Im sure you’ve seen me around in infertility or here over the years. Currently going though a 7w loss after an abnormal US. Enlarged yolk.. small measurements the whole thing.

ANYWAY. For our next transfer we are discussing transferring two embryos. Which in the past my RE has been a pretty firm one embryo only dr. Mostly because I had an open myomectomy in September of 19. None of my fibroids were huge but they were there… now they’re not.

Has anyone gotten pregnant with twins after having a myomectomy or several previous csections? Just looking for experience with the state of your uterus / how it all went.

Very light period after a laparoscopic myomectomy

Hi everyone (I'm not sure if anyone is even going to see this post, ha.)

I basically started this community because I had questions and concerns before and after this surgery and wanted to discuss it with people who are going/ went through fibroids and myomectomy, but I didn’t know where to post it and r/fibroids seems to be defunct. I saw some people post their questions to r/endo or r/womenshealth but I thought it would be nice if we had a community focusing just on fibroids and myomectomy where we could help each other out and share our concerns, questions, recovery experiences, advice, support etc. So here’s r/myomectomy!

Anyway, my period after surgery has been super light, which would have been great if it wasn’t a sign of intrauterine adhesions aka asherman's syndrome. I mostly see women still have a heavy period for the first few months post-op so of course I'm concerned. My fibroid was also on a posterior uterine wall and for some reason adhesions seem to be more frequent with this type (according to google). Anyone with a similar experience?

My Myomectomy Experience

I had a myomectomy several weeks ago for a lime-sized intramural fibroid on my anterior wall. The surgery went well and recovery was quick.

Two and a half weeks after the surgery I met with my doctor and got the all clear to orgasm (but intercourse was not recommended until four weeks post OP).

My sexual health is very important to me. I also have a very healthy libido. I was concerned that orgasming might hurt or not be achievable after surgery. The fear was depressing and, ultimately, not worth my time.

Every orgasm I've had since after the surgery has been achieved faster and has felt more satisfying. I can't say this will be true for every woman. I'm not sure if it's because the fibroid has been removed or if it's psychological.

If you have any questions on my surgery, ask away and I will be more than happy to answer.

Anxious after Myomectomy

I finally had a successful hysteroscopic myomectomy on 10/22 to completely remove the 6cm pedunculated fibroid from inside my uterus.

My cycle started 11/8 and was weird, but I expected that. It would be normal/heavy in the morning but then nothing the rest of the day. That lasted about 4-5 days before becoming brown spotting. I’d consider the spotting to be the same as a light period day. That’s continued into today. I’ve also had mild cramping since the cycle began. I’m just nervous that something is wrong. This may be nothing but after the six months we’ve had with this stupid fibroid causing me to be in and out of the hospital I’m not surprised that I’m a little uneasy.

Also, I have my saline ultrasound tomorrow to check and see if my uterus is back to normal with size, shape, and to see if any new fibroids are present. I’m terrified that they’ll say β€œOh there’s another one” or that something else is wrong.

I’m just scared. Has anyone else had a hysteroscopic myomectomy?

Open myomectomy- check!

I just had an open myomectomy to remove one fibroid of 15 cm and 12 others of varying sizes. I had no symptoms prior, except for a belly (and I am very skinny and it was not showing !)

My surgery went well, apparently. Everything was 'preserved' so to speak. I was in for 1.5 hours, I took spinal anaesthesia, and sedation to sleep through the process.

My post op has not been fun, to say the least. It took me 18 hours to make the courage to walk . I was expected to walk in 8 but I had too much nausea. It took the nurses some yelling to make me. It didnt help that I had both, a catheter and a blood drain in my stomach. Also the gas from the anaesthesia kept me awake on day 1 entirely. It hurts! I showered since day 3, came home on day 3. At home, I am suffering from a lot of gas and acidity. My meds do not seem to suit my stomach. So it's a catch 22 between pain on the stitches or abdominal discomfort like I have never seen.

Today is day 7. I would say I feel like a 5/10. Please tell me it gets better ;)

Regarding Myomectomy

Hi. I got diagnosed with PCOS earlier and had a talk with my OB about my ultrasound results. All of my laboratory tests are normal but I have a myoma (11.2 cm in size, the way how my OB described its size is that it's somehow comparable to a head of a newborn baby). My OB told me that it's benign and not cancerous. My OB was very nice and educated me about the causes and that I shouldn't worry that much. She recommended to have it removed while I'm still young (30).

To be honest, this news is not yet sinking in. I feel like I haven't processed this information properly knowing that I have this in my body. I suddenly felt anxious.

For those who had myoma, how did you come up to a decision of going under surgery and have it removed? How big was your myoma? Any advice you have for me?

Orgasming after robotic myomectomy

I recently had a robotic myomectomy to remove a medium (lime-sized) intramural fibroid. The surgery was a success and I went home same day. I had minimal bleeding which tapered off after a day. I took 5 mg/6hrs oxy for pain management for less than 2 days. I was taking Tylenol and ibuprofen but also haven't needed them for days.

This happened last Monday. My pain is down to a dull soreness, though I still tire out easily.

Before the surgery I was told I would need to abstain from sex for six weeks afterwards.

That said, I am a very sexual person. While I can abstain from sex, abstaining from masturbation has been difficult. Prior to the surgery, I was masturbating about 5 times a week and having sex 1-2 times.

My follow up appt with the surgeon isn't for another week and I plan on asking him then about non penetrative stimulation, but I wanted feedback here.

Am I risking opening up the wound if I use my clitoral vibrator? Part of me feels like this is a stupid qiestion because of course healing is my number 1 priority. But then I think about how often women's needs aren't considered when discussing medical issues so I feel like I should ask the question.

Open Myomectomy - AMA!

I recently underwent an open (ex-lap) myomectomy for a very large uterine fibroid. I was mostly asymptomatic leading up the procedure. All I felt was some light pressure in my abdomen that I thought was related to weight gain. I had a Mirena IUD placed about 5 years ago, so my periods had been relatively light. I have a physical job in healthcare and I do HIIT workouts 5-6x/week.

While switching doctors, my new PCP noticed the firmness and ordered an ultrasound. When she saw the results of the ultrasound showing a large fibroid, my PCP then got me into my new gynecologist, who then ordered an MRI. The MRI showed a 20cm fibroid at the top of my uterus, slight pressing onto the ureter of one of my kidneys and compressing the Fallopian tube of one of my ovaries. I then got referred to a gyn-onc surgeon whose specialty is preserving fertility. I am recently married and wanting multiple children. The surgeon stated that it would have to be an open surgery because of the size and location of the fibroid. This meant a 2 night stay in the hospital and future child bearing via c-section.

All of the testing/surgery scheduling happened within 4 months.

The day of surgery went as perfect as could be. Despite the surgeon discussing possible complications of a hysterectomy or loss of an ovary (so much depended on what she found when she went in there), she was able to preserve everything and I have normal anatomy again! I have a large incision from my pubic bone to above my bellybutton. I had a pain pump for the first night that got taken away the following morning. I have been managing the pain with ibuprofen and toradol in the hospital and just ibuprofen at home. Getting in/out of bed remains the most uncomfortable movement, but I am able to take small walks. The gas pains were the worst pain of everything so far.

Feel free to ask any questions! I am off from work for at least a month, so I can keep updating with my recovery.

5 months post myomectomy

I was diagnosed with innumerable fibroids, endometriosis, and an endometrioma (bloody cyst) on my ovary at 20. They never did anything about it since it wasn’t affecting my every day life. But let me tell you. Ever since I started my period at 13 I would have massive bloody painful periods. I would just have to push through the pain since it was β€œnormal” to feel pain on a period. I’d get pain up and down my lower back all the way down to my legs (not sciatica if you’re wondering), migraines, exhaustion, and did I mention the bleeding? I would bleed through a super plus tampon every 45 minutes for 2-3 days. But yeah, those issues didn’t affect my life… there were times my period would last 3-5 weeks non stop just because. Then I finally found a pill that helped regulate my period and I discovered menstrual cups and they helped for a while but all my big symptoms were still there, just a bit less bleeding and less irregular periods. Then one day when I was 31, I ended up in the ER with massive pelvic pain. My fibroid got so big it was running out of blood, so the doctors FINALLY recommended me for surgery. I got my surgery in March. A 2 hour surgery turned into 5 and a half. The Dr took out as many big fibroids as she could, the cysts, and cleared a bunch of endometriosis adhesions I had on my tubes. Recovery was painful. So much crying and throwing up because of meds. I had my first β€œperiod” in June and it was incredibly painful. I regretted the surgery and thought I broke myself. Doctor recommended I keep taking the pill with no placebo week but a few days ago I started getting breakthrough bleeding so I gave in and just stopped taking my pill to just get my period over with. I’m fully healed now and there’s no pain! NO PAIN!!! I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop and to start getting those shooting pains that are so damn reliable, and nothing!! I’m on day 2 and usually by day -1 I’m already bending over in pain needing ibuprofen. I was skeptical that maybe it wasn’t a real period but nope, the consistency is right and I have most minor cramps, because the cramps are there, but they are like a 1/10 when they used to be an 8/10-9/10. I didn’t know life could be like this. I’m bleeding normally. Filled my cup today, barely any pain, in a good mood. I never thought I’d be happy on the same day I’d be on my period.

Just had a myomectomy--when will I start feeling normal again?

Hi! I had a robotic myomectomy on Wednesday. They removed 10+ fibroids and said I lost some blood but nothing serious. I stayed over night and I've been home for 2 days.

All in all I think I'm doing well? I'm taking my pills as prescribed and not doing anything extraneous. I'm having some constipation but I've been taking Metamucil so I'm hoping that will help. I'm assuming I should avoid any straining while I attempt to pass a bowel movement? Is there anything else I can do to help the constipation?

Another thing I'm kind of worried about is my period. It's about to be the normal time I usually start my period and I was wondering when I should be concerned to call my doctor? Before surgery I had occasional blood clots and a heavy period. Should I not worry if it's still like that? They always asked while I was at the hospital if there were any clots (there weren't) but would that be fine while I'm normally menstruating?

I know I can and should ask my doctor these things, but I like to plan ahead.

I'm also wondering when I might start feeling like myself again? I think that's what I hate the most. I can't relax like I normally do because it hurts or I'm afraid I'll rip something open. Any insights or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Looking for peoples experiences with myomectomy for fibroids

So basically I have a very large fibroid ruining my life, had a UFE in January at my doctors suggestion but it is still quite large and not had a lot of symptom relief.

I really want to get a myomectomy but the doc said it is not advisable for the size and location of my fibroid. However now I think I'd like a second opinion as I feel in hindsight this particular doc was just not up to the task of removing it, he basically said UFE was my only option.

I have also researched and discovered UFE was actually invented to stop blood supply as a preoperative move before myomectomy, but it ended up working well as a stand alone treatment. However I want to pursue surgery.

Has anyone ever been told their fibroid was inoperable? Or maybe even gone down this route of ufe and then surgery? Thanks

What do I need to take with me? What should I expect before, during and after surgery and recovery?
