Does anyone know what the deal is with the giant fish that are in the pond under the Flora Footbridge this spring?
I don't know my Ontario fish too well. They look like some type of carp. Are they supposed to be there, or is it an accident? And they seem to spend a lot of time messing with each other and flopping around on the surface - is this normal?
Helicopters, Helicopters, Helicopters everywhere.
As you can tell spring is here, and the Helicopters are emerging from their winter hibernation*. You just have to look up at any time (but especially between midnight and 5am, right over your house) and the skies all over Bristol are full of them. But how do I tell a Greater crested Police Chopper from the Common Garden Air Ambulance I hear you cry ? You luck is in, as I have you covered....
G-HEOI a Eurocopter EC135 P2+, the most frequent visitor to our skies
G-HEOI is the main Police Helicopter you will see in our skies, in it's summer coat it is navy blue with a distinctive yellow crown. Can often be found hovering over parks late at night...or residential homes in the middle of the night. Its nest is located near the Almondsbury interchange, but don't even think about going and disturbing the nest. Egg theft is not cool.
G-NWOI - you can clearly see the distinctive regional variations in the plumage
G-NWOI a close relation of G-HEOI is often seen in the skies over Bristol at this time of year (the special local season between spring and summer - beloved by all locals - twats-have-a-riot). As you can tell from the markings on the side, she is a slightly different species, being of Welsh origin.
On special days (or most likely nights) these two wonders of nature can be seen performing their distinctive mating dance over the city, with fantastic lights, displays of swooping and hovering, and strange, haunting noises that can be heard for miles around.
Other similar Heli's to watch out for - G-CPAS and G-POLA both Eurocopter EC135 P2's have occasionally been seen over Bristol, but you will have to be keen eyed as they look identical to our hometown hero, G-HEOI.
These distinctly colourful Helicopters are far less likely to be seen hovering, they like to move fast as they have places to go, and people to save.
G-WAAC - The Great Wester Air Ambulance Charity, another Eurocopter EC135 T2+, in its striking two tone Lime and Blue markings. Another frequent visitor to our skies, but mainly during the day and very very rarely after midnight. Lives near Almbonsbury.
Silly mode off - This bird does
... keep reading on reddit β‘I am curious about what systems are in place to protect this "city in the trees."
What I mean by this: What companies, government entities, laws, local NGO's and other groups around Atlanta exist to help protect the trees that populate our city, the parks we love to play in, the green that gives us life!
I know about Trees Atlanta...but aside from that who has say in what trees get cut down, which trees are spared, how do developers have to approach cut vs. keep, what sort of trees get planted as the beltline gets built out...this kinda stuff. I'm assuming a lot ends up on the plate of private companies like developers, general contractors, etc. who are either building things up or tearing things down...but does the city have a branch for landscape architecture? Who decides which trees get planted in our parks, along the beltline, right-of-ways throughout the city, etc.?
Would love to have a conversation about this with all yall!
Forgot to add but she also has her profile pic on Instagram as Flora
