TIL about the endangered Maleo bird from Indonesia. Maleos make their nest with decomposing vegetation on the bottom, then place the egg and cover it with sand or soil. The layers make a natural incubation by the decomposing bottom layer releasing heat, and the top layer of sand keeps the heat in.

How long do birds gestate their eggs before laying them, compared to the incubation time?
As far as I know, all birds are internally fertilised. Then the eggs "gestate" inside the female for a while (I don't know if that's the right word for it). Then she lays the eggs. Then they need to be incubated for a while before they hatch.
How long is this "gestation" period between mating and egg-laying, compared to the period of incubation? Is there a typical ratio or does this vary wildly?
I am especially interested in birds (or reptiles for that matter) which lay a small number of large eggs, like ostriches.
My motivation for asking this is that I'm writing a fantasy story which includes an egg-laying humanoid species. I'm designing their biology and I want some real animal data to compare with.

For birds who relies on their partner to feed them during incubation, do they ditch their eggs if their partner doesn’t come back?

My 30 year old ball python just laid a clutch of eggs. She’s never been bred. It’s parthenogenesis. Spontaneous cloning. Two of the eggs are still healthy after 4 weeks of incubation!
