Question about Edmund Hillaryβ¦
I just heard his name mentioned in a TV show, which made me curious: is he the first non-Sherpa/Himalayan person to make it to the summit or is he actually the first to ever have proof of making it?
I donβt know much about Mount Everest and mountain climbing other than what Iβve seen from a few documentaries. I just find it hard to believe the first human being made it to the summit in 1953.
Does everyone go by this or is there some controversy about him not truly being the first?
I wasnβt able to find any talk of controversy on Wikipedia.
Thanks π

Follow up from yesterday's post of the ice axe signed by Sir Edmund Hillary
Taken at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Canada around late 80s. I don't know who the Nepalese gentleman is. The event was to raise money for schools in Nepal. My mom was a school teacher and had been to Everest herself from the Tibet side in the early 80s so they had lots to talk about. Yes, the ice axe signature is legit.
I didn't consider how much respect one person could hold by so many people, therefore thought that the axe was just an off-the-shelf item that had been signed by the thousands and may be only worth a 100 bucks. I really had no idea. I also learned that a signature on an item is not simply to increase its monetary value, but is there to remember the person, and to create dialogue about that person and their achievements.
That being said, I may auction it off so that someone who has the ability to show it off in a display case may do so, so that Hillary can be remembered. It doesn't belong in a storage closet. And yes, I do need an axe, but shorter, lighter, angled, better for self-arrest.
Sir Edmund Hillary gave back to the communities who enabled his success. There are many schools and hospitals in Nepal today because of his efforts later in life. Know that respect must always be given to the local communities who's infrastructure we rely on to get to the trail-head, and supply us with what we need to get to the summit. I think that is his legacy.
Thanks for listening. Pack in, pack out. Respect the locals.

This is my 1st Edition copy of the 1954 book βThe Conquest of Everestβ. It is signed by climbers Sir. Edmund Hillary, Charles Evans and George Lowe. I bought it in a used book store in the early 1970s for $2.50. Now worth much more than that in dollars and personal value. 13 images.
