Tried Seedlip distilled NA beverages. No.

I got their assorted mix for Christmas. The β€œspiced” tastes like waving cinnamon under your nose and the β€œherbal” tastes mildly of pickles. The citrus is the best, and tops out at β€œmore lemony La Croix.”

So: sticking with the LaCroix and Pom when I feel sassy.

Recommendations for locally distilled beverages and experiences?

Hello! My siblings and I do a secret Santa each year. I’ve pulled my brother in law, and he has a lot of drinking paraphernalia (decanters, whiskey stones, book of bourbon drink recipes, etc) on his wish list but I would like to add a whiskey or bourbon for him to try to his gift. Any recommendations, especially something made locally?

Second, I’ve taken to gifting my dad experiences rather than things the past few years. He’s gotten hot sauce and craft beer delivery subscriptions the past few years which he really liked. He also likes bourbon/whiskey, and cooking/food and live shows. Any suggestions for some local experiences that might be fun to gift? I understand this is a somewhat broad request, and I’m ok if that is reflected in any potential feedback.

Thanks!

Instead of having the Vice President cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, determine the outcome of a tie by a drinking contest. Each Senator will have to drink a beverage grown, brewed, or distilled in their home state.

We'll have to apply some math to make it all fair, but we should be able to make it work. Give different Senators various handicap levels based on body weight and sex. Base it on actual ethanol content, not just volume (so the Senator drinking light beer doesn't automatically beat the Senator drinking straight vodka.) Stream it all live on CSPAN. And not just one Senator has to drink, the entire Senate does. The first side to have a Senator lose their liquor loses.

For added fun, make the Senate majority leader a position that can be challenged at any time via a straight one-on-one drinking contest. Any Senator, at any time of day, can challenge the majority leader to a one-on-one drinking contest. This will of course create its own legislative tactics. I predict the rise of the "inebriation filibuster," where a minority party tries to slow down the majority leader by keeping them plastered 24/7 via repeated challenges to their post.

TIL the BM word for Alcoholic Beverages/liquor - "Arak" is a misnomer, because Arak/Araq is actually a specific type of alcoholic beverage (Levantine distilled spirit made with Grapes and Aniseed)

Definition by Dewan Pustaka

  1. minuman yg mengandungi alkohol dan memabukkan, minuman keras

As you can tell, the word "arak" in BM seems to cover all types alcohol drinks (beer, wine, hard liquor etc) as all types of alcohol can cause intoxication.

Not to be confused with South/South East Asian Arrack however (despite bearing similar name), which is made of sugarcane or fermented coconut flowers.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) is proposing to amend its regulations governing the labeling and advertising of wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverages. Including Absinthe

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/11/26/2018-24446/modernization-of-the-labeling-and-advertising-regulations-for-wine-distilled-spirits-and-malt

Proposed § 5.149 sets forth a new standard of identity for Absinthe (or Absinth). Absinthe products are distilled spirits products produced with herbs, including wormwood, fennel, and anise. Under Industry Circular 2007-5, certain absinthe-type products are now allowed in the U.S. market, but are generally classified as distilled spirits specialty products or liqueurs (if they meet the standard of identity for a liqueur). Under current TTB policy, the word β€œAbsinthe” may not stand alone on the label; therefore, labels use multi-word names that include the word β€œAbsinthe” (such as β€œAbsinthe Vert” or β€œAbsinthe Superieure”). TTB believes that consumers understand what absinthe is and that it is appropriate to set out a standard of identity for absinthe. The proposed standard reminds the reader that the products must be thujone-free under FDA regulations. Based on current limits of detection, a product is considered β€œthujone-free” if it contains less than 10 parts per million of thujone. Finally, TTB proposes to supersede Industry Circular 2007-5 in its entirety, without incorporating the requirement that all wormwood-containing products undergo analysis by TTB's laboratory before approval. TTB will verify compliance with FDA limitations on thujone through marketplace review and distilled spirits plant investigations, where necessary.

Does any distilled beverages actually improves with age?

Im putting together a time capsule away for the family. It will be selaed next month and opened in 2030. We were thinking of putting a bottle of brandy / scotch or something that would survive sealed on the closet for about 20 years. After researching for the best alternative, I found conflicting reports. Most enthusiasts claim that once bottled, spirits will not "age" any longer, so a 100 year old bottle of a 12 year aged scotch still tastes like 12 year scotch... In the other hand, many folks claim that aging (of brandy in particular) produces an enhanced flavor.

Seems like a case for Science.

Perhaps we will need to open a few bottles... for science! Thanks in advance :-)

On the Concept of Demons (Part 5)

First / Previous / Next

Kathmin surveyed his quarters. It was far more spacious than he’d expected and even included private lavatory facilities. He had dinner with Commander Rigel at the Officers Lounge in 15 minutes. He wasn’t sure where that was, so he decided to head that way. He splashed some water on his face and looked at himself for a moment in the mirror above the sink. Water was dripping from his whiskers. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. The natural mask around his eyes, providing his distinctive procyonid features, couldn’t hide the fatigue much longer. He splashed his face again, dried himself, and glanced back at the reflection in the mirror. His fur was getting decidedly grayer with each passing year. The telltale tufts of white at the tips of his ears twitched.

β€œYou’re getting old, Kathmin,” he said to himself. β€œYour adventure only just started this morning, and already you seem like you need a nap. Pull it together. Not only were you right about the galaxy’s common nightmare, but you’ve been asked to enter the dream and speak with them.” He thought for a moment about the implications. β€œYou’ll probably be lucky if you ever sleep peacefully again,” he mused. β€œWell, like Uncle Fynn always said, β€˜Be careful what you wish for, Kathmin; you just might get it.’”

He donned a clean shirt and straightened his jacket. Finally, tolerant of the likeness facing him, he set off. As he turned a corner in the hall, Zhiela exited another room. She, too, was wearing different clothing and looked refreshed. Her dress was simple but elegant. Her eyes locked onto him immediately, almost mechanically, causing an instinctual reaction that made his heart skip a beat. She waved and waited for him to make his way down the corridor.

As Kathmin neared her, he spoke up, β€œGreetings, Zhiela! Care to walk to dinner together?”

β€œHey, Kathmin,” Zhiela responded, β€œare you sure you’re not worried about wandering the lonely hallways with a Dursk?”

Kathmin chuckled and said, β€œPerspective, Zhiela, it’s all about perspective. While I will admit to a certain amount of trepidation this morning meeting you in that dark cafe, I know your people are reasonable, educated, and honorable. Where we’re going, on the other hand, well, let’s say th

Let's have a better understanding of the origin of "Skadi"

Sakya Fjord

Hraunfossar (Panel 1&2)

I am quite uncertain about this one, cos there are so many different waterfalls in Iceland, and there isn't one that looks very similar. But based on Rosa’s description of it being bumpy and the nearby settlement Reykholt, I choose Hraunfossar.

Hraunfossar actually means 'Lava Falls' in English. Because the area around Hraunfossar used to be the site of constant eruptions, the lava fields are known for their hidden caves. It is a series of beautiful waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming out of the lava field.

Sakya Fjord vs Hraufossar

Reykholt (Panel 3)

And there are actually settlements near Hraunfossar. The nearest settlement of significance to Hraunfossar isΒ Reykholt.

This tiny village has a huge history, being home to the legendary writer, chieftain, law speaker and poet Snorri Sturluson. Without Snorri, huge amounts of Icelandic, Nordic and even British history would be unknown.

Sakya Fjord vs Reyholt

Ponies

If you have looked at the description of this place, you will have found Rosa mentioning ponies. Ponies are actually referenced from Iceland horses. They are long-lived and hardy. One of their most notable attributes is its five gaits, known for its sure-footedness and ability to cross rough terrain as well as the typical gaits of walk, trot, and canter/gallop.

In today's Iceland, the horse is much more generally considered a friend and a comrade and very much loved by its people.
