A list of puns related to "Carbon Microphone"
Hello,I am the lucky owner of X1 Carbon Gen9 (running Linux, everything works out of the box - works like a charm).
Lenovo (partially) fixed the issue they had on recent (relatively older) Thinkpads where the power button light was too bright (on the T14s Gen2 for instance). One problem remain though: the other user facing LEDs are still too damn bright (Fn Lock, Shift Lock, Sound Mute, Microphone Mute).
I rarely use the Fn/Shift Lock and Sound Mute keys but 99% of the time, my microphone is muted. So the LED light on the Microphone Mute key (F4) is on.
Is there a way to invert the behavior of that key so that the LED is on when the microphone is active?
PS. I know that there are some blackout stickers but I am looking for a software solution
Hello everyone,
I've read countless older articles depicting the issues of the 4 speaker system and 4 microphone system on these machines. Now, it seems that by installing sof-firmware these two things should work out of the box with today's kernel and with sof-firmware, and they do to a point. The speakers are recognized and all 4 are firing (the top two are a little quiet, but that's a topic for another discussion). The microphones are still not working though EXCEPT when I use a software on the aur called "audio-recorder". When using this software, there are TWO input sources for the microphones both called "Cannon Point-LP High Definition Audio (Microphone)". One of them works, and the other does not. Also, when trying a test meeting on Zoom or just testing in other software, I get no sound (it sees the card, though).
Has anyone else experienced this and figured out a fix? The wiki for this laptop points to older articles that I have already read and have apparently been resolved. I haven't posted on the Arch Forum before, so I thought I would start here. Please let me know if you need additional info or if I should direct my question elsewhere.
TL;DR Microphones on this laptop are only working on very specific software and not on other software specifically Zoom.
Edit: I have determined that the other output that isn't working in audio-recorder is likely the headphone input after looking at pavucontrol. They both start with the same name, and I think that the software is simply just not showing the full name. I'm still not sure why Zoom or other software is not working, though.
Edit2: I was able to fix the problem completely. Read the comments to get the fix if you're also having this issue!
Now that pulseaudio 14 has been released and sof-firmware
and alsa-ucm-conf
have been packaged, the integrated microphone should work out of the box on the Thinkpad X1C7. However, this is not the case, and my laptop continues to report that the microphone is not detected. Following [the old steps on the Arch wiki](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_(Gen_7)#Audio) didn't work for me either. Anyone have any idea on how to get this working?
Edit 1/25: The issue was a lack of support for SOF firmware for comet lake systems in the Void kernel. This was fixed in version 5.10.10 of the kernel released just recently. If you upgrade to this kernel version and can't produce sound from your speakers, you may need to fiddle with some PulseAudio settings using something like pavucontrol.
I have a splitter to connect both headphones and a mic to the ThinkPad's single audio jack. It worked for a long time but suddenly it stopped detecting the mic properly. This is what it looks like if I connect the mic by itself: https://i.imgur.com/xaSh3d2.png
I have tried:
Has anyone run into this before? What did you do?
I've searched but only found some old posts. My boss's microphone sounds terrible when on zoom calls (basically like he is under water and it cuts out and the volume is low). The laptop is hardwired into a Lenovo dock with Ethernet. Are there multiple microphones on the X1 Carbon 7th gen? (20R1) Maybe one is blocked or dirty?
For the Lenovo X1 Carbon get 7 owners, I wrote a simple guide to resolve its audio and microphone problems.
Let me know if some steps are unclear!
I've recently run into a problem where my computer (carbon x1 7th gen, running windows 10) doesn't recognize any microphone, either external and plugged in or the built-in microphone. I was able to use the internal microphone for several zoom meetings in august, but since then the microphone has essentially disappeared. As far as I know all drivers are updated. Does anyone have any advice for this problem?
Hey everybody,
so I ordered my build, assembled everything and everything seemed solid. The internal WiFi on the board wasn't great but I knew this was a possibility. Then the next issues started popping up. The front IO of the case wasn't able to handle USB3 sticks for large files and would just fail during reading/writing. That wasn't a big deal, I could just use the back ports for USB3 then. After going into discord my friends could barely hear me, so I went on a frustrating deep dive of reinstalling drivers, trying out all the different settings, switching to the back ports on the mainboard but nothing worked. My standard AUX headset with 2 seperate jacks is just too damn quiet. People can hear me when I have it boosted to +30 dB but that's the max I can do and I'm barely on an okay volume level that way.
Can anyone suggest other solutions I could try? Is a good solution to just send that mainboard back and get a different one to save myself the headache ?
I have a project with an old rotary phone, but it seems to me that the mic isn't working anymore.
My circuit was simple: [mono jack ring]---[carbon mic]---[AA battery]---[mono jack sleeve]
The mono jack is then plugged into my guitar amp. From the tutorials (here, and here) I've seen it should work, but I'm only getting a buzz. I've also smashed the mic a few times as suggested, but it doesn't change. Same with a 9V battery.
Any ideas before getting rid of it?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Part I
Throughout the storied history of planet Earth, countless species in the animal kingdom have battled malicious viruses and bacterial strains; all with varying degrees of success. While these microscopic invaders wreaked havoc on the hostโs embattled immune system, it did so without support or assistance from any other microscopic species. In essence, we were often able to overcome these internal attacks because they came from only one pathogen at-a-time.
We โknewโ they were primitive life forms; wholly incapable of complex mental function, or self-awareness. Any empirical evidence to the contrary wouldโve suggested a significant level of sentience we werenโt willing to entertain. The human race was so fixated on its perceived โsuperiorityโ, that we refused to consider the possibility of species outside the animal kingdom being able to communicate with different life forms too. Our scientific community and religious leaders assured our fragile little egos that humanity is unique.
โOnly we can communicate with each other in a meaningful way.โ; They told us. We thought of these one-celled parasites attacking our bodies as unthinking, mindless โgermsโ intellectually unaware of their own existence, or the greater world outside the body of their hosts. Those โfactsโ made us feel important and special but they were recently proven very wrong.
In a surprising level of collaboration that went initially undetected, the viral and bacterial kingdoms started attacking their human hosts in a deliberate, calculated fashion. This highly unusual partnership was unlike anything weโd experienced before. Their tandem attacks meant that previously developed natural immunity or lab vaccines only had a minimal impact.
Deaths spiraled globally from what was previously curable conditions. This hidden disease alliance led the leading virologists astray because they were still targeting specific strains. Besides offering malicious pathogens safety in numbers and greater gene variety, their united front afforded them unparalleled resistance to what had been our most effective treatment options.
There was also the devastating effect of natural evolution as a bringer of beneficial adaption. In โcomparing notesโ and sharing their inherent biological strengths via reproduction, it allowed the rise of super strains produced through organized cross-breeding. Even the โcommon coldโ mutated. It was able to weaponize itself tenfold against thousands of years of mammalian re

Heard they've been doing some shady business.
Arthur C. Clarke once said that we humans have two equally terrifying possibilities; we are either alone in the universe or we are not.
So let me get straight to the point. Intelligent life does exist in our observable universe and we are vastly technologically inferior to them.
Scientists have often constructed horrifying theories about the nature of higher intelligent life and I hate to say that some of them are right. I canโt confirm every conspiracy like Roswell or whether aliens helped the Egyptians build the pyramids. What I can confirm, however, is all the knowledge given to me by โDr. Charybdisโ.
I am honestly surprised that Dr. Charybdis didnโt exterminate me when we first met. My college years gave me some of the worst moments of my life, so much so that I would drink and drug my sorrows away at night near the beaches of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
When I first saw Dr. Charybdis, I figured that my latest batch of shrooms had some nasty stuff in them. After all, if you encountered a tall bipedal cephalopod with a violet colored lab jacket made to fit six protruding tentacles, you would probably think you did some hard hallucinogenic drugs too.
Now youโre probably wondering how I remember my first encounter with Dr. Charybdis even through all the drugs, alcohol, and thirty years of time since. Well, it turns out that Dr. Charybdisโ tentacles absorbed the alcohol and hard drugs from my system and forced me to regain consciousness.
Once my senses had a reawakening, I feared for my life, especially when this octopus creature made these high pitched gurgling noises. Now I know they were its natural speech. However, it reached into his lab coat, and stuck a device resembling a microphone into its tooth filled mouth. A deep robotic male voice then uttered the following statement.
โHello, fellow inhabitant of this primordial rock. The laws of my home galaxy forbid travel to rocks or clusters not properly developed yet. According to my research, you are the dominant species of this unregistered planet?โ.
โWellโฆyes but I am just a random drug addict. Wait, you stuck that device in your throat and it can translate your gurgles to human English and my speech to your gurgling language?
โThat is correct, fellow habitant. I am here seeking items which I can return to my aqueous world. Can you provide assistance? I can provide some service in return.โ
It did not take long for me to develop a casual business relationship with Dr. Charybdis. It tur
