Atterberg Limits Puns

Hi, I'm trying to get some clarification regarding the water content that is measured in the Atterberg limits, but having some trouble finding the answer in the literature.

I know that pore space, and therefore the amount of water able to be stored in pores can be affected by disturbances to the soil (such as compaction).

But, the Atterberg limits (particularly plastic and liquid limits) are not affected by soil disturbance as the tests can be performed on sieved material. As this is the case, can someone explain where exactly this water is? Is it the water that gets absorbed into the crystal lattice of the clay minerals (swelling clays)?

Sorry if this is a basic question, I'm new to soil sciences and want to learn

i have a soil assignment on atterberg limits, one question in particular im a bit confused on. Q) write a short summary of the soil properties and of how good is soil 2 as a subgrade material? Given i have all the results already for soil 2, how do i know how good soil 2 is as a subgrade material? and what projects in construction would clay be considered for? results were obtain by casagrande liquid limit test, cone penetration and plastic limit test. thanks

Is there an ASTM or AASHTO specification for how long samples can be stored for tests or is it a matter of in-house decision? Currently we store the samples for up to 3 months after performing atterberg tests on them in zip lock bags or plastic buckets.

I was wondering if there are any good references/papers or resources on the Atterberg Limits, and what basis they have in physical reality.

I'm thinking along the lines of elastic theory - do they relate to moduli or other physical properties in the same way things such as compressional velocity, elastic behaviour etc.

The paper that got my attention was this:

Fener, M., Kahraman, S., Bay, Y. and Gunaydin, O., 2005. Correlations between P-wave velocity and Atterberg limits of cohesive soils. Canadian geotechnical journal, 42(2), pp.673-677.

There was a reply to the paper which raised a few issues with what the authors did, specifically the fact that what they were correlating had no physical justification; correlation not being causation:

Sawangsuriya, A. and Fratta, D., 2006. Discussion of" Correlations between P-wave velocity and Atterberg limits of cohesive soils". Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 43(6), pp.653-655.

So yeah, what I am looking for is any discussion about the Atterberg limits. Does anyone know any good starting points?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
