Hi, does anyone know of any online groups for Scottish and/or Irish people living in the DC area?

Genuine question, I know the situations are different, but it seems like the deciding factor in the Troubles was that people in the US with Irish heritage put pressure on their elected officials to support Ireland and the peace process. Why hasn't there been a similar movement around people with Scottish heritage? Why do none of the mad cunts who claim to be descended from William Wallace get involved in constitutional questions?

If scotland gets independence, will I be able to get citizenship as part of the scottish diaspora, also will scotland join the commonwealth.

OK, that’s all the Gaelic I can muster for now and my brain is on fire, so I’ll switch to English so this post makes some sense. Please feel free to correct anything above! 😊

I will be starting An Cùrsa Inntrigidh this term and I’m really looking forward to it. However, I am not at all Scottish – I’m from the northeast US and was raised in a completely different cultural diaspora (hint: bada bing). As a result, I want to be sensitive to the historic and current context around the language and its role in communities that speak it, as well its role and reception in other parts of the country, both socially and politically.

I hope it’s OK to ask this here - I understand that it can be a sensitive subject and it’s not directly about the Gaelic language, but I was hoping folks might have some good ideas about books, news sources, podcasts, blogs, etc., that you find helpful and relatively balanced as a good introduction for someone currently (very much) outside the community. I’ve read some things on my own already, and I presume this will be discussed throughout the course as well, but I would love some additional recommendations from those who are part of (or at least closer than I am to) the Gaelic-speaking community if anyone is comfortable to share.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
