Hi, I'm a soprano and will be auditioning for the solo parts of Bach's Magnificat in D (BWV 243). We've been asked to audition using "any piece by the composer, any edition, preferably 2-3 minutes duration". Any recs, please? Thank you so much.
I couldn't find anything about incensing during these times in the GILH, but according to my recollect it is done to an altar, and can theorhetically be done by a lay person acting as an altar server.
Can a layperson incense, say, a crucifix, since there is no altar, with a thurible during this time? Assuming of course I don't think I am carrying out any sort of sacerdotal function. And I don't: I realize the sacerdotal function is in the Eucharistic Sacrifice.
I recall hearing somewhere that some manuscripts read "and Elizabeth said" instead of "and Mary said." I forget where I heard the following, but apparently whoever posited it made the case that the Magnificat as delivered by Elizabeth makes better contextual sense as a continuation of verse 45. By this reckoning, as Hannah's song was meant to highlight the joy of her bearing a son after failing to conceive so many times, so a woman of Elizabeth's age bearing a son would be notable, much more so than a woman of Mary's age bearing a son, if we don't consider a virgin birth. Is there anything to this? Would this have any relevance to our knowledge of a John the Baptist sect, or is it moot since the whole thing is patterned after OT types about barren women or angels appearing before a hero's birth, as in the case of Sarah and Hannah, and the wife of Manoah, respectively (sorry, don't remember whether Samson's mother is named)?
In the Proprium De Tempore , it skips straight from Sundays' Matins readings and Lauds Benedictus Antiphon to Feria Secunda, with just a little bit of red text saying the Antiphon for Sunday vespers is in the Ordinarium, but the place there points me back to the Proprium. Help!
