For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Working on a "culture/community-based toxicology" lecture for EM residents. We're in the US, but get visitors, recent immigrants and folks from communities with unique exposures. Hope to include less common things that we should be familiar with. Have been asking around here but wanted to ask here! If you have suggestions (especially from Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Bangladesh, Nepal or really anywhere in central America...Afghanistan would be helpful since we're anticipating an increase in this population).
I'm particularly interested in any pharmaceutical or over the counter meds that US docs aren't as familiar with (or ones we're used to but for other indications). Trying to get away from the ones on every US board exam (eg trying to get beyond fugu/tetrodotoxin).
Some of the ones I'm considering:
- Arsenic poisoning among Bangladesh immigrants due to ground water
- Botulism type E poisoning among Alaskan indigenous populations from fermented blubber; Vitamin A poisoning among the same group from marine mammals
- Cyanide poisoning from improperly prepared cassava root that is not treated with cyanide antidote
- Kratom for patients with chronic pain seeking other options
- Kambo/Giant Monkey Frog cleanses among health conscious folks
- Khat (more common in some of our pts w East African/Middle Eastern heritage)
- Airborne exposure/burn pits among those involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom
- Ivermectin among COVID patients
- Lead toxicity among internationally adopted children (and our kids, obviously)
- Rethinking metastatic processes on the differential in pts w occupational exposures (using nail salon employees as an example)
- Urushial contact for those harvesting cashews
- Giant hogsweed/snake root causing milk sickness in rural communities
Any suggestions would be very appreciated! (and I'll likely need to do a more focused lecture...but right now I don't feel like I have enough of any one sub-topic)
