A list of puns related to "Italianism"
Does anyone know any Italian puns? I'm looking for jokes on the level of "A man walks into a bar. Thunk!" and "Two fish are in a tank. One says to the other, "How do you drive this thing?"" It's one thing learning how to use language formally and sensibly, but wordplay is a big part of language too and I'd be interested to see if there is any fun to be had in Italian.
Now Iβm not asking if anyone of Italian descent identifies as Italian, because we already know the answer to that lol. Iβm just curious if you guys use any words, phrases, mannerisms, insults, etc. that originally came from Italian.
Just a random curiosity I had, I hope that you guys donβt think Iβm a stunnad or somethinβ βπ»

LIST TO DO:
So while reading a section of the "Liber Gratiarum" (Register 16) of the Venetian Republic, I came across a curious phrase: "...quod similiter sint cives Veneciarum non possendo mercare vel mercari facere..."
"Possendo" is a thing in Italian, but not good Latin, so it is a clear "corruption" by Classical standards. But I wonder: possum doesn't have a surviving gerund, so could this notary's corruption actually be a clever invention, even "expansion" of received Latin?
This appears several times in the Venetian "grazie", so I wonder if this was a sanctioned Chancery innovation to more easily say "not being able to".
I have to admit, after some consideration I don't find this as offensive a medievalism as I first thought. It could even be considered a sign of Latin's vitality as a working, adaptable language in administration
What did Tony say to Grasso in the kitchen that got him so heated? Also, share your favorite italianisms, for lack of a better word, and the meanings behind them.

I cannoli hope I find it.
Yes it happened today and while at work. So I saw a coworker eating, what I had thought, a papaya (it was a calzone). I asked him where did he get the papaya (it was a calzone). He then said he got it at some local restaurant. Just a totally normal conversation. That was until a different coworker of mine and one of my friends asked me why I was calling the calzone a papaya. Told him papaya was Italian for calzone and wanted to sound fancy.
It took 5 minutes of me arguing that I was correct and that a calzone was indeed called a papaya in Italian. That was until they made me Google it.
Now I'm being made fun of (all in good fun) by all of my Coworkers. How I got this far into my life at age 28 thinking a papaya was Italian for calzone is a total mystery and now I'm questioning my whole vocabulary.
TL;DR: thought papaya was Italian for calzone. It is not.
Edit: so I've decided to say screw it and continue calling calzones papayas even though im incredibly wrong. A redditor supplied me with an imagine that I am putting on a t shirt. Here's the link:

... keep reading on reddit β‘Iβm currently 5 months pregnant. My ex is Italian and he (and his family) want our baby to grow up speaking Italian. They think that I should learn the language since Iβll have primary custody, so that I can teach my child. Theyβve offered to pay to send me to classes or to hire a private tutor for me, so far Iβve refused both offers.
Now that weβre divorcing, learning Italian seems pointless to me since I will never go to Italy ever again and I donβt have anyone in my life that I would ever speak the language to.
The more I refuse the more upset my ex and his family are getting. They think Iβm being selfish and that I should do this for the sake of my baby and not for them. They claim that by refusing Iβm rejecting parts of my child and my child will pick up on it as they grow older. During our latest fight over this, my ex told me he will make my life and divorce very difficult if I keep refusing him.
AITA for refusing to learn Italian?
